I am thinking while the locals are busy searching around the bush and the beach, perhaps the Sydney homicide detectives can follow up on every backpacker at Wake-up or nearby hostels, on that day, and may have checked out afterwards and left town.

Looking for a phone, even though it's purple, is still a needle in a haystack job.

Whereas Theo was there at Byron for only a day. How many mates would he have their phone numbers, and WhatsApp with in the middle of the night? Of course if the message recipient(s) was not local, there is nothing to worry about.
Only a day? When did he arrive?

As well as not leaving Cheeky Monkey's at the same time as Theo, when they went out together and had spent the evening together ........

That pic doesn't sit well with me either. A very casual 'friendship', with Theo maybe doing all the buying?
I wonder how much money Theo had left for the rest of his visit.
Didn’t they meet at the Wake Up hostel the day or two before? Antoine said they connected fast as they’re both from Belgium and Theo was really relaxed and friendly. Maybe Antoine had mates with him? Theo was travelling alone so I guess being independent wouldn’t seem strange. They did however go to the bottle-o together so maybe they were both travelling alone and paired up. Maybe Antoine met a girl and wanted to stay on. Where’s the cctv from inside the bar?

Sounds as though the night he went missing was possibly only his 2nd night in Byron Bay.

Theo had been in Byron for only a day or two, barely enough time to register among the myriad hippies, surfers, beachgoers, travellers, celebrities and long-time residents of the coastal enclave.

Thanks. I know I've read it more than once, but when I try to look for it, can't find it!

Also Theo was only booked to stay for about 2 more nights. It was not supposed to be a long stay at Byron.

So I think it was quite reasonable, when he got an unexpected early night off, he thought of watching the sunrise. Not many opportunities left.

There is one thing that occurred to me when I saw the bottle shop footage. I mean no disrespect, but Theo looks gaunt in the face. I understand it could be a trick of light. Of course, traveling backpacker style can have that effect. The footage seems peculiar to me. But I'm probably making something out of nothing.

Yes. Could just be too many cheap 2-minute noodles, and not enough eating decent food. And the harsh lighting of fluoro lights perhaps.

New video here. Two dogs joined the search today. Doorknocking of residents. Two CCTV cameras can be seen clearly at Woolworths Caltex station.

PLUS a resident said Theo was seen running by his house that night at around 11:30. The resident was just returning home, and he didn't see anything but "wished he could have helped".

A little more info, from Herald Sun just now ......

Mr Van Laethem said he sent Theo a text the following day which was never answered.

“We went out together after leaving the hostel and we arrived with some other people from the hostel and then everyone talked with other people,” Mr Van Laethem said.
“I didn’t see him leaving before me, I don’t know when he left the bar before us. An hour later he was kicked out of Cheeky Monkeys.

“I can’t tell what time I last saw him, we came together to Cheeky Monkeys but I didn’t see him leaving the pub, maybe before 11pm.
“I sent him a message the day after but he never answered and six days later his cousin sent me and told me he’d gone missing for about a week.”

Mr Van Laethem said he had thought about leaving Byron Bay but decided to stay to continue with his English lessons.

Police have been door knocking south of Belongil. Close to where the Wake Up! hostel is. So he was running away from someone?

But police are still searching the Cape Byron area. Starting on Wategos Beach tomorrow.

I have been Google walking the area - using the video screenshot as a guide.
It looks to me that Theo was seen running on Shirley Street, close-ish to and on the same side of the street as the Woolworths Caltex. Across the road from the Mango Tree apartments.
There is a block of units (well, 4 letter boxes together) and it looks like that is the part of the footpath that was shown.

I wonder (again!!) what is on the CCTV from the Caltex station. If Theo was being followed or chased, the CCTV should have caught that.

Gosh they are sending in divers tomorrow....
I wonder if they think they'll find anything. I guess they must, but the most eastern point of Australia has some pretty wild currents. I imagine there would not be much to find.

If he was running, I guess there are two plausible reasons. He was late to a meeting, or he was running from someone. The guy coming home that saw him didn't mention any cries for help or find any reason to raise alarm. Obviously, his behaviour didn't demonstrate panic or fear, according to the witness. So one would imagine he was running to something, if for any particular reason.
