Sorry I forgot about translating the entire story. The begining is exactly what you all describe. The Police Officer says they came to exchange their respective data and get things straight. That they walked together Théo's trail (red dots). !! Here insert what I wrote in the previous post !!. As to the end re the maps around the lighthouse he explains the space of incertitude : 500 meters, 1 km, 2 km.
Is the post of one of the members comparing the GM and GPS data, trails still here. Which page or what # ? Thanks. BTW The police officer didnt mention the two different tracks.
This one?

I did some reading on this with the OPPO phone it has a couple different features on it for DND.

To my knowledge and understanding from what I have read online a phone will ping the towers when it is searching for information.

This will vary on each phone and depending what notifications that you have set up.

Flight mode and sleep mode switch off the receiving end so that you are not disturbed or the signal cannot come through the phone, just as you are on an aircraft. I believe OPPO has a feature that in sleep mode you can add contacts or apps to override this but nothing else, so if you wanted your parents to be able to contact you in event of an emergency they still could but no further notification would come through.

When a phone is first switched on it will start searching for the carrier, IE Telstra and when it locates the signal there is your ping.

Google Maps, Facebook Gmail etc anything that you have notification alerts set to on and or location services again will be searching for that signal to locate you or to send you a notification / email / sms etc.

I think of it in a way of your telco / wifii/bluetooth signal sending information to your phone based on your settings.

If you are in DND, flight mode, sleep mode I believe this cancels this ability to ping the phone. As soon as the phone is switched on and taken out of these status it opens the lines of reciving communication therefore will ping.

I am not tech nut however from my reading this is what I understand only and all IMO.
Sorry, I think I still don't quite get it. My Oppo flashes a small white light when someone texts or calls me (when the phone is in sleep mode, not when I have switched it on). So to me this makes sense that the tower has 'found' my phone and 'pinged'. But I'm probably wrong and it seems a pretty complicated thing to explain just in a forum like this. I just thought if we once and for all cleared up whether the 'ping' could have been from Antoine's message/call or not then we would know whether the phone was definitely turned on the next day. (If I'm following all this phone timeline stuff correctly!).

It has never been disclosed what time his friend messaged him on the 1st of June in which he never replied.

I have always thought it may have been his message that pinged the phone however if his phone was switched on why has it not pinged earlier.

Thanks so much for translating that information it is very helpful. So when you say they said they walked together Theos trail red dts did you mean the red trail on the maps on their laptop or the red dots on the map that was released here in Australia with Mainstream media that was not featured in this interview with the policeman?

The map that the policeman shows on the laptop is different to what we have seen in MSM here and has more of a trail that what we have seen.

On the LFTH group today
Notice no cap / hat is shown here so do we presume that the one found was his?

is this sleep mode something you put the phone in manually? What’s the point of it?

I have just had a work colleague who speaks French (or a little French) watch this and said that the laptop with the CCTV in squares images that they are looking at the Belgium police officer is discussing the CCTV between Cheeky Monkeys and the hostel (as in the street CCTV) and are looking for a POI or familiarity of a person between the hostel and CM.

Please note this is not my translation and is also translation from someone who understands a little of French so I cannot verify what he has translated.

Disparition de Théo Hayez en Australie: un policier belge sur place explique les zones d'ombre

Is there anyone here who speaks French at all that is able to translate the entire story?
Can anyone recognise the two buildings on the left of the screen?

Call it sleep if you like but it's just a power saving mode that mostly turns the screen off. Oppo is Android so there's nothing unique.
While in that 'mode' you still have an active connection through the tower and many background processes running that do their own thing. So, you're 'connected'.
There are other power saving modes that disable many background services and screen power use but still maintain a phone connection. Those can be set to kick in automatically at low power or manually. There's usually a power saving prompt to do so manually at low power if auto isn't enabled.

So therefore his phone was purposely 'switched on' to get the ping the following day? And it wasn't in 'power saving' or 'sleep mode' which I thought were one and the same thing?

If he dropped it on the rocks and it went into power down sleep mode, a knock by an animal or wave etc could be enough to wake it up and connect (cause a ping) couldn’t it?

Alternatively, after a late night the friend Antoine wakes up after midday and sends him a text which could cause the phone to reactivate and set off the final ping at 1.42pm. Or the phone could’ve been collected the next day and removed from the scene, causing it to momentarily wake up and ping the tower.

That puma cap currently undergoing testing was allegedly found some 200 metres in from the beach. If his, he could’ve dropped it while trying to find a way up the hill, or it could’ve been blown by the wind after he dropped it, or it could’ve been flung into the bushes, or it could’ve fallen off his head whilst he was being moved.

The dots in the fork formation at the end of his beach walk give the impression he was looking for a way out, either up through the bush or around the rocks. They however both stop short of making much progress. Or he tried the bush track and turned around to attempt the rocky side on the sea. It’s such a perplexing mystery and we need more info.

Nope. I really doubt anything visible in that clip is of much interest as I reckon it’s all just cctv snippets. Philipe Pierrard looks too clever to give anything away so easily.

Dark grey lines = police route
Red dots = Theo’s route

There’s some overlap.

I'm not good at using the quote mode and so missed the space for my answer. Meanwhile following the note of Rockett333 I rechecked the video and yes the Police Officer was talking about the track he followed with Matt and Grant. At the same time he was showing with his finger the only really visible track on his laptop. I can only see the red dots and no really visible grey ones. I even though that the Belgian officers had left Australia before the grey dotted track came into the news.

Not sure what I've missed here so correct me if I'm going over the same things.

Studying the map...

Theo takes a left turn onto Tennyson St. There could be many explanations for this - was he hoping for a path through to the beach, heading back to Wake up! or did he simply make the wrong turn? This sometimes happens to me when following Google Maps, the location pin stuffs up and you wind up walking in the wrong direction. Or maybe I'm the only one? Hah

From here it looks like he went to the Stay in Byron Apartments and then continued on to the beach. Did he meet up with someone there and they walked to the beach together?

The only thing that suggests to me that Theo went down to the beach alone, is the fact that he sent a WhatsApp message to his friend back home. Usually when I have company, I won't be sending texts. Perhaps it's plausible that his friend went to go pee in the bushes or something and that's when he got out his phone and sent the message.

I wonder if Theo used Tinder while on holiday in Aus. My sister travels a lot and she always uses Tinder as a way to meet people and hang out, not necessarily a hook up but it's an easy way to meet other travellers in your area.

I don't think Theo was buying drugs, weed etc. I read he was only in town for 48 hours, I can't imagine him making a connection within that time frame. Also, a lot of the time you don't need to buy drugs, people just share them with you.

Not sure how I feel about the phone, pings etc. Do we know what model Oppo phone? I think they're meant to have pretty good battery life.

From memory Theo’s route was published by the time the Belgium police arrived, and they used it to investigate. Hope these help more.

Where he actually walks up and down is at the oval along Cowper Street (not so much the next block down). He could be waiting for someone who was supposed to meet him at the Tennyson Street side of the oval, but then told him to walk across the oval to the Cowper Street side. He zigzags here, but once he leaves, it’s a direct or straight path. I see it as a curious blip on his journey.

Maybe he was simply trying to get to the beach and kept taking wrong turns. He seemed on a mission when he left the bar though.....

My thoughts are that identifying it as his or not his would be an investigative priority given the profile of this case and the lack of leads. If it wasn’t his I think we all would have been told by now. Remember the hoodie and shoes found were discounted pretty much immediately?

I wish the police or family would come forward with more information. If they want our help, tell us more. There are messages between family and friends that are known but not published.

If not, this is getting boring and I’m switching off this thread.
