The father of the bride who was allegedly murdered by her new husband during their Australian scuba diving honeymoon said today that he wants justice for his daughter and that her accused killer is lying about what happened underwater.

Tommy Thomas, the father of Tina Watson, who was 26 when she died in 2003 while diving near the Great Barrier Reef, told "Good Morning America" that he wants to see his daughter's former husband held responsible for the death.

"What we want is for him to face the evidence for the very first time in front of a jury," Thomas said.

It does seem odd though if you are tried and sentenced in one country (and assuming you received a fair trial/sentence and paid your "time") you can be tried in another country and have to go through it again in another country for the same crime? Now, I'm not saying i don't want this guy in prison, because I do feel he should be there a long time. Just doesn't seem fair (not for murder cases but for other crimes).

He wasn't convicted of killing her, he was convicted of failing to render assistance which resulted in her death. I imagine that Australian law is modeled after British law, and according to Wikipedia these are the rules for criminally negligent manslaughter:

In English law gross negligence is the test for manslaughter. The crime was defined in R v Bateman as 'to show such disregard for life and the safety of others as to amount to a crime against the state and conduct deserving of punishment.[18] In R v Adomako the House of Lords affirmed R v Bateman, and set out the five elements required for negligence:
A duty of care owed by the defendant to the victim.
A breach of that duty.
A risk that the defendant's conduct could cause death.[19]
Evidence that the breach of duty caused the victim's death.
The defendant fell so far below the standards of the reasonable man in that situation that he should be labelled grossly negligent and deserving of criminal punishment.

It is for the jury to decide what constitutes 'grossly negligent behaviour'.

Gabe Watson was only prosecuted for this because the DPP (by extension the QLD Gov) didn't want to spend the money it would cost to prosecute him for murder, maybe they didn't think the people in the state of Qld would care about an American girl murdered on their shores, they were wrong.The Qld Police who did the investigation were devastated as they believe they had put together a solid case and that Mr Watson was indeed a murderer. There was a massive outcry by the public and his sentence was extended but still laughable. The Qld Gov. then made it extremely difficult for him to be extradited back to the US.

At the end of the day the fault lies with the Qld Gov. for not treating Tina like anyone else murdered on Australian soil and this came down to money, pure and simple.

On another note, for some reason I :floorlaugh: each time I read he was a "former bubblewrap salesman." Nothing wrong with the profession - just makes me :floorlaugh:

I know! There's something so wrong about it :)

Anyway even though he's out on bond he still has to wear an ankle monitor, that he attempted to have removed and that demand was refused. Apparently the Queensland detectives will be witnesses for the prosecution and it will be fascinating to hear their testimony.

Thanks to everyone for posts and info. about Tina. I've been following this case in MSM for a while now.
Really gives me chills to think Gabe may have planned Tinas' death even before the wedding. It hardly gets any worse than this.
According to the above video link, his attorney (?) says Gabe Watson is happily married now as if that somehow proves he couldn't have harmed Tina.
I think Mr. Watson felt he got away with it once ; but twice may have looked too suspicious.
If I were Tinas' parents, I'd want just her maiden name on the headstone and not the last name of someone who --if he didn't murder her -- left her to struggle and die on the ocean floor.

I hope justice is served. The fact that Gabe Watson removed flowers that were place on Tina's grave by her parents, speaks loud and clear.
