The thing is, in the legal argument, Spedding's lawyer has to prove that made people think less of him. It is not just if something printed is right or wrong.

Did that one word make people think less of him? Or did the whole POI in William's disappearance and being charged with historical child sex offences make people think less of him? Personally, I think the latter.

It would be interesting to know if that article was published prior to his son Rodney saying Spedding's business had dropped off.

Thanks, soso. That's what I thought. The possibly-defamatory article was published in Sep 2016 ... 18 months later. Spedding's reputation was already 'soiled' by then.

I believe it is the POI status that caused his work to drop off. Plus the Ross River Fever and distress that Rodney said his father was suffering from.


This comes just 10 days after his father was arrested at his Bonny Hills home and charged with five counts of sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 10 years and two of common assault.

Rodney added that his father, who suffers from Ross River Fever, has really struggled with being in the spotlight since the police first raided his home at the start of the year.

'It's been tough for him, he's been very distraught … It's been hard for him to get on with life afterwards and trying to get over it and move on.'

When asked if there is anything he’d like to add, he says: “Well, I am not guilty, of course. I was never there on the day.”

If an article that has been published but reposted - say on the internet. Does the 12 months commence from that date or the actual date of publication?

I think, in this case, it would have to be within 12 months of when Daily Mail and The Australian published whatever he thinks is defamatory. Because it is them that he has taken to court.

So, judging by the link you have provided, one would think it is something from the period between 12 Sep 2014 and 18 April 2015 (at the latest).

i found this, probably not relevant but item 12 sounds familiar, original complaint 1985, so 2 years earlier than the alleged historic, and initials dont match......and nothing to do with finding william sorry

The error was pointed out to Daily Mail at the time and they did nothing to fix it. I think it was Makara who emailed them; or it might have been me. So it wasn't just a reporter's slip or a failure to proof-read.

nothing really, i just stumbled across the site when i typed convicted paedophile bs into search and this site came up, it struck me how similar case 12 was to his historic abuse case and made me wonder if it was related somehow, maybe an earlier assault, but the initials dont match, so a bit pointless really, sorry
