''A mysterious liquid hurled in a shocking street attack has left a woman hospitalised with a chemical burn.

The 27-year-old was at the intersection of Norfolk Rd and Callistemon Cl in northwest Sydney’s North Epping about 6.15pm on Wednesday when she was approached by a woman she didn’t know.

Without warning, the stranger allegedly splashed her with a cup of unknown liquid, hitting her face, clothes and headphones.''

''Police searched the nearby area for the attacker but came up empty, and have now appealed to the public for help identifying the woman.

She is described as being of Asian appearance, wearing a light-coloured cap, an N95 white face mask, a black jumper and dark long pants at the time.

She was holding a silver, metal cup in her hand.''

'Investigators described the attack as "unprovoked" and established a crime scene.'
''The alleged attacker, described as being of Asian appearance, was wearing an N95 face mask, a light-coloured cap, black jumper and dark long pants, police said.

6:15pm in Sydney now, it should be dark already.

The attacker also wore a likely large sturdy mask (N95) - not so commonly seen these days.

I wonder if the victim simply didn't recognise her. Just guessing.

A common form of assault in some SE Asia countries, particularly in the past. When I lived in Cambodia in the 90s there was even organisations set up to help the victims who were usually young women. In 2012 Cambodia passed an Acid Law that requires hospitals, including private ones, to provide free medical care to victims. They also passed legislation limiting the availability of the most common chemicals.

Many times the perpetrator was paid by an older wife whose husband was having an affair with the victim.

On google maps, the location of the attack appears to be just a suburban street, with a sporting field across the road. There's even a little public book library box on the post. Definately not a hussle bussle busy city street with a lot of pedestrian traffic where you would gain some anonimity. This screams "targetted attack" to me.
