Northern Territory, Australian Police have rescued a very distressed, 50kg (110lb) kangaroo that was stuck down a mineshaft. They used a touch of the Wild West to do it.

There was some discussion and debate over how to rescue the animal, because it was too dangerous for the officers to abseil down the old copper mine at the Daly River Station - eventually, officers decided the only way was to lasso him. It worked. Rescuers were able to haul the frightened critter up, and off he hopped.

Before I get in trouble with our Australian posters, I'd better point out the article states the 'roo is actually a 'antilopine wallaroo' -though I can't tell the difference between a Wallaroo and a Kangaroo, myself.
