Questions for everybody

I have been reading about this in the news accounts and the comments too. Your thoughts please:

Has there ever been a case that has captured the whole world's attention? It seems this crime has gotten more ink & air than any I know of.

Why are we so consumed by this? Does internet access have any bearing?

I am very interested to know your analysis!

I think it has captured a lot of interest because it has everything that is evil in one case.
1. Kidnap and imprisonment for an incredible amount of time.
2. incest
3. betrayal
4. murder
5 rape and violence
6. children as victims
7. torture

I mean what is left?!

<Ah, so we have found the narc. The snitch. The rat who turned on - and turned in - the perp.

If this is true, he has my undying admiration and respect. What a good man.>

why are you assuming it's a man? women are doctors too you know.

pleading insanity?? he didn't seem so insane when he went on that 'boy's trip' to thailand a while back with his buddies, and he didn't seem insane to his work associates, and so on. please spare me!!!! just because you're sick doesn't mean you're insane, in my book.

as for the wife-- i don't care how beaten down she was. when the monster was away for a month, did she not think to venture down to the cellar and look around a bit? not that she would have seen or heard anything. but to not go in the basement for 24 years.... in your OWN house.. i mean,, come on. just HOW big is that house anyway? is it like a castle??
and the fact that everyone is 'forbidden' to go near the cellar.. is that not a CLUE that something bad is happening down there??? tyrant, shmyrant. i cannot believe in all these decades NO ONE had the guts to stand up to this arrogant prick of a man.. and everyone allowed him to have so much power. then again,, if wifey had bought a gun & blown his brains out, that would have sealed the fate of the cellar dwellers... UNLESS.... her curiosity led her to get a construction crew to break through the walls...

Talk about some seven deadly sins. :bang:

Also, wondering how the wife could not know anything, it boggles the mind to think it could go undetected for 24 years!

I don't mean in love as you or I might be.. I mean in love in his way.

I can't see it having anything to do with love. He may think so. But I see it more about control. I read in some article about her arguing more with him than his other children. I think he had domineered everyone in his life and in E. he saw a flicker of something he couldn't quite control. I think he then came up with a plan to break her. Rape is about power not sex. In my opinion, he had to have control over her, and this may have been the only way to get the control he had to have.

Good analogy MCDRAW. His despicable crime comes from his own impotence as a human being. To further this he had to have more victims. Now we have one dying and we have a baby that may have been saved had he not thrown it in an incinerator. We have two other children who are living with lifelong disabilities that may or may not be be remedied. We have Elisabeth whom I fear will never be normal or at least not functioning in the world as a normal child who had the opportunity would be.

Yes, this case has world wide vision and opportunity to correct some of the wrongs. Not in this case but in others that someone may have seen something or are suspicious of something.

I totaly agree with you. But I guess what I am asking is do you think that HE thought he loved her. I think this is beyond control and power for some reason. I feel there is another power, if you will, at play here and I am trying to rule things out.

1 in 6 girls sexually abused in the home, in austria??? good god, what is going on over there...? then again, the numbers are high everywhere, aren't they? including here in the US.. anyone know what the stats are?
at least here we have a culture where we can talk more openly about it, and there are public resources to help people.... do they not have that in austria?

  • #335
I was taught in school that 1 in 3 American women has been the victim of some kind of sexual crime.

Most of these statistics are largely educated guesswork because so many such crimes go unreported. But judging from my own circle of acquaintances, 1 in 3 seems about right.

but there's a difference between a sexual crime, which could be random,, and sex abuse in the home, right? i thought i read that 1 in 6 austrian girls in sexually abused at home.. and there was a shocking number of incestuous situations going on. i wonder what those stats are here..

"There are still areas we haven't found inside the dungeon and I expect it to take at least two weeks before we have answered all the questions we need to about how Fritzl controlled the areas and imprisoned the children.

"Areas of the dungeon appear to have been under construction and it is possible Fritzl may have been planning to expand it even further."

Police want to see him die in prison but under the country's law the maximum sentence - even for double murder - is 15 years. That can be reduced to ten for good behaviour.

***

Detective Inspector Polzer said: "We want to see this man die in prison. It will take a lot longer than ten years for his victims to recover from what he put them through.

"The man is evil beyond words. The misery he has inflicted on his family is unimaginable." But Fritzl's lawyer, Rudolf Mayer, said: "In my personal opinion, Josef Fritzl is mentally ill and therefore not responsible for his actions."

Disgusts me. only hope he dies before he tastes freedom again.

Even if the insanity plea is overturned, the max it looks like he will serve is only 15 years. :behindbar:confused: WTF is wrong with the government over there? Someone like this should NEVER see the light of day again. His daughter was temp. blinded when she saw daylight for the first time in 24 years. He deserves worse than what he did to her. :furious:
