Avatar Problem

I was trying to upload my Christmas avatar and got this message:

Your file of 42.9 KB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 97.7 KB for this filetype.

That doesn"t make sense to me.

I think the site resizes the avatars and some times that message pops up but the avatar posts anyway.
tis a mystery,I'll snoop around.
I wonder if it is the wrong file type? what file type is it?

I think I've figured out that it's too big. It doesn't have too many bytes; it's just a little too big for the space.
