Avi was last seen in Fairbanks, Alaska sometime during the latter half of May 2004. On May 13, he went for a ride with 3 other men. They had been on a meth binge and had been high for days. On the ride, one of the other men shot another in the head and they dismembered the body. The motive for the murder is unclear.
A few days later, police attempted to stop Avi and another man for a traffic offense. The body parts were still in the car, so the men took off in the car, leading police on a high speed chase. The police caught Avi and charged him with DUI, failure to stop, and criminal mischief. When his father bailed him out, Avi said he was going away for a few days.
Authorities initially believed Avi left to hide from authorities and avoid his charges, but they now suspect foul play was involved.
