BUCKEYE, Ariz. — A mother accused of killing her 5-month-old son told police she stabbed him, had been hearing voices in her head and wasn’t in control of her actions, police said Tuesday.


A police probable cause statement released Tuesday also said officers responding to a 911 call Monday arrived to find the boy’s grandmother holding him and screaming, while 29-year-old Andrea Aurelia Portillo was covered in blood as she stood behind the grandmother.

According to the police statement, the boy had multiple stab wounds to the neck and his 3-year-old sister told detectives that her mother cut the baby’s neck.

“It appears there are some mental health issues here,” prosecutor Tara Prochko said during Portillo’s initial court appearance Tuesday. “We do believe that this suspect is a danger to herself and certainly a danger to others if out.”

Hopefully they have professionals who can look real thoroughly at her mental status. I do realize it happens, but I hear it more often being claimed.
