I just want to add an aside. I've been a single mom, I've survived cancer, I have a daughter, I swam in the dating pool -- my heart goes out to the silent victim here -- the mother. She died, unaware of the monster she was leaving her children with. So so so unfair thst he took such awful wicked, advantage...

I have heard this ugly truth: there are imposters who seek out single moms with daughters for all the worst reasons. Some will even tarrget pregnant women for the same reason. They can be very, very patient. Sick predators. Lovebomb the mother, lay in wait.

Appalling.

Please let him be convicted.

It's unfortunate that certain evidence hasn't been allowed in (MT's criminal history, for one) but the prosecution has done well with what they have been able to use. The letter, those contracts, the recorded phone conversations, etc, don't paint MT as the loving and concerned father that he pretends to be, and the defense's tactics are horrible and not very bright (I hope the jury sees through it). I do like that the jury is able to ask the witnesses questions.

It seems that the defense doesn't have much to defend their client with, which is probably why they come off as so aggressive and rude. I hope it doesn't end in an acquittal, but if the judge ends up declaring a mistrial I hope he can be tried again.
I didn't know it but this case has already had one mistrial. moo

Defense pushed trying to show Michael Turney went to great lengths to get attention to Alissa’s case. Attorneys trying to paint the picture that Michael was frustrated with detectives not doing more. A very intense and vulgar phone call was played last Thursday for the court. Vulgar language was used when talking about Alissa. In that call, Michael also says the 28th was a bad day. Defense tried to prove that it could be earlier in the year in 2001 (possibly the anniversary of his wife’s death). The Det. was quick when asked to say Michael’s former wife Baraba was never mentioned in that call.

TURNEY TRIAL DAY SIX: We are back in court and getting an early start. Defense is continuing with cross examination of Detective Anderson with Phoenix PD. Today there are a lot of unknowns with what will happen. We could see closing arguments start. I’ll keep you updated in this thread.

The defense is asking the detective about bank records, video recordings that have been brought up in the case, and now some of the statements Michael Turney has made about his step-daughter Alissa Turney.

The state has rested their case.

Defense is now asking the judge for an acquittal based on the lack of evidence and proof that Michael Turney killed Alissa. They also say there is sufficient evidence that Alissa ran away

Just before this Michael Turney at one point appeared to be going over some notes with his attorneys.
State now saying they don’t have to prove how Michael Turney did it, they just need to prove that Michael did kill Alissa.

So here’s what’s happening legally. Rule 20 in AZ. Defense has requested acquittal based on #1, the state is now responding.

Judge is now giving defense the final word. Before it appears he will make a ruling.

Judge is now speaking.

There is confusion right now but as far as I’m understanding Michael Turney has just been acquitted and will be released.

BREAKING: Michael Turney case thrown out by judge. Some people sitting in the family row are crying. Michael Turney appears to audibly breathe a sigh of relief. Prosecutors have gotten up abruptly.

This has happened very abruptly and there was a lot of confusion and shock.

Michael Turney was acquitted based on Rule 20. I tweeted this earlier but here’s another explanation.

saw this on my phone , ugh. is this with or without prejudice or does that matter? I can agree the evidence was not as strong as I would have liked to have seen.
Without prejudice, ability to try the case again with more evidence. MOO

MT was acquitted so he cannot be tried again in a court of law. "Jeopardy is attached." MOO
