She says Sarah (Alissa's sister) and Michael's relationship was not strained and was very different than his relationship with Alissa.

JURY MAKEUP
There are 12 seated jurors, only 8 will deliberate.
Four are alternates but they aren’t told which is which.
Majority are over age 60.
Eight women, four men.
And they get to ask questions at the end of each witness.

Back in court...defense is making opening statements right now. No mistrial despite the defense requesting one before break.

Defense is painting Alissa in a different light, as someone who wanted her own life. They are saying Michael did everything to gain attention for Alissa's case, but with no luck.

Sorry for the drastic end in tweets. We had a real sprint to turn our stories for 5 pm and 6 pm. Sarah was still testifying when court wrapped for the day. Things will pick up again Monday.

Sarah is emotionally thinking about her first memory of Alissa dancing to the radio.

[...] In opening statements, the defense told the jury that there was nothing to prove Alissa is dead.

[...] "This entire case is about belief, speculation and conjecture," Defense attorney Jamie Jackson told the jury. "There's no evidence. They can't tell you where Alissa died, they can't tell you how she died and frankly, they can't even tell you if she died."

[...] "It was always a bad relationship wtih Alissa and my father, which caused a lot of stress and tension," Turney said during the trial Thursday.

[...] Both the prosecution and defense still need to finish questioning Sarah as part of the two-week trial, which is expected to pick back up on Monday morning.

TURNEY TRIAL DAY 2: Today is Day 2 of the Michael Turney trial, and could be one of the MOST important days. Sarah Turney will be back on the stand. She is one of the state’s key witnesses, and was even thanked during the press conference announcing the charges against Michael in 2020. Walking in, I already saw Alissa Turney’s biological father.

If you missed my other tweets recapping this Phoenix case that is full of bizarre twists. Head here to my thread from Day 1

Day 1, July 6

TURNEY TRIAL: Opening statements are about to begin in the murder trial of Alissa Turney, a Paradise Valley teen who disappeared in May 2001. Her step-father, Michael Turney, is accused of killing her. Alissa was never found. In the courtroom is Alissa’s sister, Sarah Turney, who began a podcast and TikTok page to help try and solve the case. An arrest of her own father was made 3 year later.

SUMMARY OF DEFENSE OPENING STATEMENTS: -The State’s entire case is about belief, speculation, and conjecture, and solely based off circumstantial evidence. -The State can’t tell you where, how or if Alissa died. They believe she did, but they can’t prove she did. -There is no new evidence from 2001-2019 that links Michael Turney to the crime

The defense asked for a mistrial already due to some of the evidence the prosecution showed like the “contract.” Judge just denied a mistrial. Trial continues and defense is now starting their opening statements

Sarah began a podcast called Voices for Justice in 2019, after she felt her sister’s cold case wasn’t getting the attention it deserved, and she grew suspicious of her own father’s involvement. She also used Tiktok as an advocacy platform. A year later, her father was arrested.
