Casa Grande was a small city surrounded by desert in the 70s and 80s. I visited in the 80s quite often because my Mom owned a weekend home in Maricopa, the closest town to Casa Grande. The desert is endless and there are mines. I believe they broke ground on the Sacaton open pit mine sometime in 1971. The closest Indian reservation is the Tohono O'odham Nation which has a population of 8000. I wonder if she was a member? There is so little known about her.

I lived close to Casa Grande in the '80's, actually closer to Eloy.

Eloy, Arizona was the last town in the USA to outlaw gunfighting in the street. That was in 1964!

Nearby is Florence, Arizona. The penitentiary is in Florence, Arizona. They grow cotton -- Pima Cotton.

Think back to Raising Arizona. There is a character called Florence Arizona!

Ms. Sanchez may have been O'odham, Pima, Apache, Navaho. I don't know enough about the different naming patterns, but my guess is that "Charge On Him" could be Apache? Just a guess!

Very little to go on, unfortunately.

Wait we don't even have a birth date? Just aged 35 at time of disappearance?

Likely, 1934-1936 range?

Shake my head....

There has to be more information about her. Is there anyone who can have access to a local newspaper's archive? The photograph appears to belong to an article, so maybe there are more details.

I think 1-1-1971 is a default date? Ann Ruth Sanchez – The Charley Project
Sanchez was last seen by her son at a store in Casa Grande, Arizona sometime in 1971. She has never been heard from again. Few details are available in her case.

I tried to find the origin of the surname 'Charge on him' (really don't know how widespread this name is), and I found a fundraiser (not relevant, can't put to link here, against TOS) from somebody with the same name from Sint Francis. South Dakota. (Lakota (Sioux) territory) Could this woman come from SD originally. Is the son still around?

Yes, please!

Arizona's newspaper archive:

Arizona Newspapers | Arizona State Library

Arizona Republic - Historical Newspapers

There will be some here, but there is time & tedium involved:

Arizona USGenWeb Archives

No joy in the Arizona Republic for Ann Sanchez in the '70's, didn't try Charge On Him.

ymmv lrr

There is a possible match on Ancestry as Anna (not Ann) Ruth Charge On Him, born 10 May 1935 and shown as resident on the Rosebud reservation in Todd, South Dakota on the 1940 census and various US Indian census rolls. Her parents were John and Keva(?) and she had a sister 2 years younger, Mary Louise.
Unfortunately nothing else.

That's great!!! I didn't try genealogy, which is weird for me. I'd skip "possible" and charge right into likely. That's an unusual surname.

There might be a third sister, Theresa Joyce, born 1941.

Apparently Mary Louise passed in 2001.

Keva passed in 1947 in Nebraska, pf TB per funeral home records available on-line. She was to be interred in St. Francis, South Dakota.

Do we even know her son's name? "Mr. Sanchez" isn't very helpful imho.

OT: I've scrolled through those tribal census records on microfilm for hours. I thank God for the transcribers who make Ancestry & FamilySearch possible! I participated in the beta phase of FamilySearch.

Great find. All of you. It seems like St. Francis, or a least South Dakota, is turning up here in relation to this name.

Mary Louise Charge On Him (1937-2001) - Find A...
If this is her sister, she died in San Francisco County, California.

I know not a real source, but for context. Info about the Rosebud Indian Reservation, South Dakato Rosebud Indian Reservation - Wikipedia

The Rosebud Indian Reservation was established in 1889 after the United States' partition of the Great Sioux Reservation. Created in 1868 by the Treaty of Fort Laramie, the Great Sioux Reservation originally covered all of West River, South Dakota (the area west of the Missouri River), as well as part of northern Nebraska and eastern Montana.

Since then, the reservation has been reduced considerably in size, as has happened with the other Sioux reservations. Today it includes only Todd County, South Dakota, and certain communities and lands in the four adjacent counties.

And Saint-Francis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Francis,_South_Dakota The population went down with 11,7 % in 1950 and again in 1970 with 28.7 %. My guess is that a lot of people tried to make a living elsewhere and relocated.

Historical population
Census
Pop.
1940
273 —
1950 241 −11.7%
1960 421 74.7%
1970 300 −28.7%
1980 766 155.3%
1990 815 6.4%
2000 675 −17.2%
2010 709 5.0%

If Ann's (Anna's) mother was Keva which I believe is very likely, she was only 12 when she passed. I couldn't find solid proof info about her father's dead. I could find him in the census of 1940 but no mentioning of him died. I'm confused. He is mentioned in the funeral home records of Keva. Also couldn't find him on 'Find a grave"...Keva neither.

It might be. There is so little to be known about Ann...No indication when she approx. was last seen in 1971 by her son (just stated somewhere in 1971) Also nothing about scars, as this Jane Doe has a large scar on her abdomen. I'm not sure how they would put Native Americans in "the books" in those days, although JD's Namus file was created in November 2021, could they have stated White/Caucasian? Distance between Kingman, Arizona to Casa Grande, AZ is almost 4 hours. No idea if there could be a connection to Kingman.

In the American West, that's really not a great distance. Casa Grande is about half-way between Phoenix & Tuscon, if one was traveling to the border at Nogales or to El Paso, TX this is likely the route you'd take.

Sanchez is an Hispanic/Chicano/Latinx surname, these groups are within the 'white' category so Ms. Sanchez' Sioux heritage may have been missed?

Abdominal scar could be c-section or hysterectomy, imho.
