That's kind of what I think too. On one of the emails the Mesa Co Investigator said that she uses the Doe Network often to look for her missing people and cold cases.

If it is James, I hope it brings closure to his family....

Good find, but I have to ask, are you emailing Mesa the city? Because I have never heard of Mesa County in AZ and I am a native.

Looking forward to seeing the out come of this.

Hayley,

Yes, It is Mesa the City, sorry about that - they have an invesigator from the Missing Person's Unit working on the case. She is very nice. We exchanged a few emails and she said they are waiting for a DNA comparsion, which should take awhile.

I contacted the Mesa Police Dept to see if they got the DNA match back from James Zinza/Coconino County UID and this is what she sent back...

No ID yet on Mr. Zinza...I don't think the Coconino County's DNA Profile has been uploaded as of yet..

I might contact the Coconino's Police Dept and see what's up...

Bumping...

James Zinza's brother, Thomas Zinza, who has been missing since Feb 2008, body has been found in a remote section of Allegheny Township, Butler County PA this past Sunday. Thomas was from Alaska, but was last seen checking in to Motor lodge in Emlenton PA. Thomas was identified by dental records.

I am going to email the Mesa Police Dept to see if they ever received a match on the DNA they for James and the UID that I had submitted last year.

Thomas was living in Alaska, his body was found in Pennsylvania, and then his brother is missing from Arizona... I think it's odd that two family members go missing and yet they are in different parts of the United States.

I received an email back today from the Mesa Police Dept regarding the possible match between James Zinza and the UID I submitted last year:

Hi Janell, James’ DNA was uploaded and it did not match. So far no matches. Thank you for the information on his brother.

I also told Margarita that James brother, Thomas, has been found deceased in PA.

I had mentioned this CODIS Hit a couple of weeks ago on the Valentine Sally thread.

Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community - View Single Post - AZ AZ - Williams (Cococino County) - "Valentine Sally" WhtFem - Feb. 1982

According to the article at the link below, The remains were matched to Pete Anthony Rose

FWIW, I ran a screen after Det. Chuck Jones told me about the hit, and Pete A Rose came up on my screen.

make you wonder, does it not Carl, at the approximate dates of death? Pete was missing in June 1995 and was found dead in November 1995 yet the officials said the UID was dead at least one year.

Yeah, just goes to showya that you can't rely strictly on estimates.

And his eyebrows look much less prominent to me than the UID sketch.

  • #33
Glad the UID has been identified. I actually turned in the possible match between the UID and James Zinza.

  • #34
Would not have recognized him -- Rose looks a lot, um, for want of a better word, prettier than the sketch. You can see the big jaw and pointed chin, but you don't notice it really.

  • #35
the hair is totally different too. the sketch shows a part on the side, it does not look like Pete neatly combed his hair at least when he was photographed.

Is LE looking into what happened to him?

Was he ID'd by dental records or DNA?

By the photos, he had brunette hair. Maybe the hair was bleached by the sun after death?

Newbie...trying to learn. :)

TIA...

I would presume that they are, now that they know who it is.

Was he ID'd by dental records or DNA?

The CODIS DNA database made an automated match. LE is automatically notified of the match, and then they do a manual DNA comparison to verify that the CODIS hit was correct.

By the photos, he had brunette hair. Maybe the hair was bleached by the sun after death?

There were only bones. The facial reconstruction was based only on a skull. There probably wasn't any hair left, so they made a guess of what his hair looked like.

I don't know the lingo and I don't know the protocol/procedure.

I just care.

Just to clarify then, CODIS is a national database that contains DNA profiles (i.e,., biological material left by a perpetrator) taken from crime victims , unidentifieds (dead and alive), convicts (and certain other arrestees), and missing persons (and their family members).

The CODIS system constantly cycles through the profiles, comparing the unidentified perpetrator profiles to the convict profiles, and the Unidentified Persons to the Missing Persons. When the system finds a match, it sends an automatic e-mail to the relevant Law Enforcement agencies.

Thousands of previously unsolved crimes, and missing persons cases (some going back decades) have been solved by the CODIS system.

This case is another example of just that.
