GPS used in Texas landfill search for Baby Gabriel?
2/18/10 Last update 7:45am
<snipped>
As investigators prepare to search a landfill for clues in the disappearance of Baby Gabriel, local landfill experts say it is a very difficult if not impossible task.

Joe Giduci, the Deputy Public Works Director for the City of Phoenix, says that the only way they would search the City’s landfill would be in cooperation with a police investigation. Otherwise finding something that was thrown away is all about timing and luck.

“We did have one woman who threw away $5,000 in cashier’s checks,” Giduci said. “She managed to figure out what truck it went out on and was able to get it back.”

The location of the trash however can be tracked with GPS technology.

Giduci says the GPS technology helps them track where they are in terms of efficiency and can also help them hone in to where trash is located.

There is a slight chance something could be found at one of the City’s two transfer stations but that is difficult as well because trash is moved continuously out of the station throughout the day and could be at the landfill within hours of pickup.

San Antonio police are searching the Tessman Road landfill for Baby Gabriel. Until now, they've been excavating the site, but Thursday they began actually sifting through each piece of garbage looking for a green diaper bag or small suitcase that could contain the baby's body.

After 7 days of digging, phase two began on Thursday morning.

Now 35 people will begin thoroughly examining the garbage, looking for possible evidence.They started work at 7:30 a.m. and they'll work until 6 p.m. Cadaver dogs will also go through the debris.

And his father believes he may have been adopted out in exchange for a $20,000 ring. In this meticulous search, crews are looking for a green diaper bag or a suitcase.

In missing baby Gabriel case, a suspect pleads not guilty
Feb. 18, 2010 12:27 PM
<snipped>
Tammi Peters Smith, the Scottsdale woman implicated in the case of missing baby Gabriel Johnson, entered not-guilty pleas Thursday morning to felony counts of forgery and conspiracy to commit custodial interference in Maricopa County Superior Court.

She remains free on $15,000 bond.

Police and prosecutors believe that Smith, 37, provided Johnson with adoption advice and contacts for a place to stay after she fled with Gabriel. And the forgery charge comes from an allegation that she falsified documents as to who isthe child's father.

Smith had no comment as she left the courtroom Thursday, but her attorney Amy Nguyen, said that they do not know why Smith has been charged.

"We know it has nothing to do with the disappearance of baby Gabriel," Nguyen said. "It's all speculation at this point. We haven't been given any information by the state."

Nguyen said that Smith was "anxious to get it behind her."

Phase II of search for Baby Gabriel starts
Feb. 18, 2010 05:21 PM
<snipped>
It's been nearly 2 months and the search continues for 9-month old baby Gabriel Johnson. At the same time, Gabriel's father Logan McQueary is getting more help from Valley businesses in his search efforts. On Thursday, McQueary spoke about plans to raise more money to help find his missing son.

"All we want is for Gabriel to be returned and I want my son back," said McQueary.

"I don't feel I should go back to work yet. We're getting a lot of leads and just trying to follow up on," said McQueary.

Meanwhile, San Antonio police removed 45 thousand tons of debris at a local landfill to search for Gabriel. Phase II now begins as dozens of people and cadaver dogs go through the debris.

"That's just in the back of my mind. It doesn't matter to me. I think it needs to be just done and over with and that's what they're doing," said McQueary.

A Scottsdale woman implicated in a missing baby case has pleaded not guilty to felony counts of forgery and conspiracy to commit custodial interference.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 37-year-old Tammi Smith entered her pleas Thursday after being indicted earlier this month. She remains free on $15,000 bond.

Police in suburban Tempe arrested Smith on Feb. 2 on suspicion of trying to pressure the father of 9-month-old Gabriel Johnson into signing over his parental rights so she and her husband could adopt the baby.

Elizabeth Johnson remains jailed in Phoenix and has refused to talk to investigators about what happened to her baby.

About 35 San Antonio police officers, detectives and volunteers suited up in white hazardous material outfits and sifted through six-inch layers of garbage for several hours. Alamo Area Search and Rescue assisted, bringing in search dogs.

"We are providing cadaver dogs, handlers and support technicians to help with searching the landfill," said Christy Bormann, with Alamo Area Search and Rescue.

Six cadaver dogs in all were brought in from all over the state of Texas.

"The dogs are trained to know the difference between animal and human remains," Bormann said.

Searchers are looking for the remains of missing baby Gabriel Johnson, or evidence that may help them in the case.

The landfill search will go on every day from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Custodial Interference and Parental Alienation in AZ
Courts are becoming more aware and considering harmful behaviors such as custodial interference and parental alienation syndrome when determining custody issues.

February 19, 2010 /24-7PressRelease
<snipped>
Police arrested a woman in connection with a child abduction case even though she is not a suspect in the child's disappearance.

Instead, Tammi Smith of Scottsdale, Ariz., faces custodial interference charges for her lengthy and repeated pressure to adopt the 8-month-old baby. The legally and emotionally complex world of adoption and parental custody is further complicated by custodial interference and parental alienation.

Courts grant various levels of custody to birth parents, adoptive parents and guardians. Physical custody means the child lives with the custodian at least part of the time, who is responsible for the child's well-being. Legal custody allows rights to decide on schooling, religion and other major factors in a child's life. It may or may not coincide with physical custody. Both types of custody also can be split in joint custody cases.

Custodial interference laws vary widely between states. Under Arizona state law, a person who is not the parent or legal custodian can face a Class 3 felony for keeping a child from their legal custodian. This may bring a sentence of up to 8.75 years in prison.

Due to the harmful nature of PAS, and custodial interference, it is important to speak to a family law attorney in your area if you believe your child may be a victim. A lawyer can provide more information on warning signs to look for in your child, assess the circumstances of your case and answer your questions regarding your legal rights and options.

Baby Gabriel's Dad: Someone Has My Son
POSTED: 7:07 pm MST February 18, 2010
UPDATED: 7:00 am MST February 19, 2010
<snipped>
Despite a meticulous search under way in a Texas landfill, Logan McQueary plans a return trip to San Antonio to find his son. McQueary said he believes his son, Gabriel Johnson, is alive.

"I think he's with a couple that Elizabeth handed him off too. And we're going to find who it is," said McQueary.

Investigating the original claim, San Antonio police identified a section of the Tessman Road Landfill where they might find evidence in the case. They excavated 30 feet and nearly 45 thousand tons of debris from a section of the landfill and today started phase two of their search.

A total of 35 workers will comb through the next layer of waste by hand and use cadaver dogs to support them.

"The dogs are trained to detect the scent of human decomposition and alert their handlers when they have located that so the dogs are searching for the odor of human decomposition," said Christy Bormann of the Alamo Search and Rescue team.

McQueary believes Johnson gave the baby away and whoever has him is scared to come forward because of all the media attention.

"They might be afraid that they're going to get in trouble. The truth is they're not. We're not looking for anybody to get in trouble, right now. All we want is for Gabriel to be returned. I want my son back," said McQueary.

McQueary is hoping money may bring someone forward with information about his son's whereabouts.

A fundraiser is set for this weekend to raise money to increase the reward for missing baby Gabriel. This event will run Friday, Feb. 19, through Sunday, Feb. 21, at Manny’s Mexican Restaurant. New and upcoming performer “Chavo” will be performing his new singles, "El Presidente" and "Yo Quero Nada" mixing it up with his smooth beat.

Authorities have rummaged through more than 100 tons of debris in their search for a missing Arizona baby at an East Side landfill.

The second phase in the search for 9-month-old Gabriel Johnson started Thursday when 35 officers with the San Antonio Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI began looking through piles of trash for anything of “evidentiary value,” officials said. The officers are also getting help from six cadaver dogs.

Officials anticipate the second phase could take several weeks to complete.

During the first phase, which started last week, workers removed about 45,000 tons of debris to be searched.

New help in the search for missing Baby Gabriel
Last Update: 2/20 11:24 pm

A national children's organization is holding a fundraiser this weekend for the father of a missing Tempe boy.

Jessica's Law Now helped organize the event at Manny's Mexican Restaurant located at 12345 W. Indian School Road in Avondale Saturday and Sunday.

The organization helps the families of missing and exploited children by connecting them with lawyers, investigators and contacts who can help in their search. It also provides support so families, like Gabriel's father Logan McQueary, can investigate on their own, and aims at changing legislation that will better protect missing and exploited children.

Manny Lafarga, owner of Manny's, hopes to raise at least $5,000 to help support Logan McQuary as he searches for his son, 9-month-old Gabriel.

Money raised will support McQuary with hotel costs and travel as he continues searching for Gabriel.

Jessica's Law Now Executive Director Mark Palmer said McQueary's journey has been fruitful so far.

"They found a couple people who saw Elizabeth, they found witnesses," said Palmer. "They shared the information, they forwarded it to the authorities."

Search for missing Arizona infant postponed
02/23/2010 1:01 CST
<snipped>
A wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain caused the San Antonio Police Department to postpone the search for a missing Arizona infant in an East Side landfill Tuesday.

“They resumed the search this morning, but have since stopped due to inclement weather,” said spokeswoman Sandy Gutierrez.

If weather allows, authorities plan to continue to search the Tessman Road Landfill Wednesday for 9-month-old Gabriel Johnson, she said.

Baby Gabriel's Dad Back In Texas

UPDATED: 10:40 am MST February 24, 2010

The San Antonio landfill search for missing baby Gabriel Johnson was temporarily halted Tuesday after snow started falling.

Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary, was also in San Antonio on Tuesday to continue his own search for his son. While in town, he met with Travis Andrews Warford, the former son-in-law of the couple -- Jack and Tammi Smith -- who wanted to adopt Gabriel.

Warford has said the Smiths "stole" his daughter, Hannah, from him by going to court and gaining custody without his knowledge.
