Just after 8 p.m. on Dec. 29, deputies went to a home in 2900 block of West Sun Ranch Trail, near North Shannon Road and West Lambert Lane...

When deputies arrived, they learned that a 5-year-old girl had been badly burned. She was immediately taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Detectives with the crimes against children unit took over the investigation, after collecting evidence and further investigation, determined that the burns were not accidental, Inglett said.

“These were horrific. We're looking at third-degree burns over 80-percent of her body,” Pima County Sheriff Mark Napier told Kristi’s Kids...

The mother, Samantha Osteraas, told 9-1-1, she didn't realize she was bathing the child in hot water. “She claimed that this was an accident,” Pima County Sheriff’s Detective Manuel Rios told Kristi’s Kids...

According to doctors, Madison was so badly hurt, that she has suffered organ and respiratory failure.

Her mom is now facing two counts of child abuse, with bond set at $25,000. However, that could change if the little girl doesn't pull through.

Samantha Osteraas’ trial is to begin Oct. 9 and last for eight days.

Osteraas is facing two charges of child abuse, after her daughter suffered third-degree burns to 80 percent of her body in December 2016.

When Osteraas called 911, she told dispatchers she didn’t realize she was bathing her daughter in hot water. When police arrived at the home, they noted serious burns on the child’s whole body, extending from her upper chest down.

Trial is set to begin Tuesday for a Tucson mother who is accused of severely burning her 5-year-old adopted daughter.

Pima County Sherriff’s deputies arrested Samantha Osteraas one week after her adopted daughter suffered third-degree burns to 80 percent of her body.

The incident happened in December 2016 at a home on Tucson’s northwest side.

At the time, Osteraas told 911 she did not realize she was bathing the child in hot water, but investigators did not believe her.

Trial begins in Tucson girl’s scalding

Prosecutors say the victim, just five-years-old at the time, suffered third-degree burns to 75 percent of her body.

They say her foster mom, Samantha Osteraas, left her in a scalding hot bathtub on December 29, 2016.

The foster mom faces two counts of child abuse. All 10 of the victim’s toes had to be amputated.

The victim is on the prosecution’s witness list. She could testify later in the trial which is expected to last eight days.
