TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A Tucson police officer has been fired after he was accused of shooting a shoplifting suspect in a wheelchair nine times, killing him, after the man brandished a knife, authorities said Tuesday.

Police announced at a news conference that Officer Ryan Remington was being terminated for excessive use of force.

Authorities said Richard Lee Richards, 61, died at the scene, and the shooting was recorded on Remington’s body camera.

How absolutely awful. He was only fired? No charges?

Well, that was terrible to watch.

And infuriating. Excessive force is putting it mildly. He wasn't up in their faces, he was a in a wheelchair rolling away. Even if he did wave a knife, he was hardly a threat to them. Just step out of the way, you know? Their first thought is to pull their weapons? On an older guy in a wheelchair. SHM.

And then to handcuff when he was most likely dead and certainly dying. No medical care, just handcuffs. They shot him in the back.

I don't live far from where this happened. I don't know why RR couldn't have just knocked him over in the scooter and incapacitated him that way.

What the actual.... Wow. I see no reason whatsoever for them to shoot him, much less that many times.

I look at this in a different way. The officer observed an alleged thief who was brandishing a knife and who failed to follow orders to "Stop!". In addition, the perp was heading back INTO the store where there were other customers.

Wheelchair or not, what if a mother with two small children was walking out of the store and the wheelchair guy reached out and grabbed one of the kids and put the knife to the child's neck? Stranger things have happened.

I don't know about the number of bullets. It seems that often the police empty their gun when they shoot and they don't aim for the legs, they go for the body mass. I don't know if it is their training or adrenaline that makes them shoot so many times, but they seem to do it a lot.

I don't understand that. The man was accused of shoplifting not capital murder. That police could have stopped his wheelchair quite easily in IMO.

Sadly, officers like this shoot first without bothering to think. Poor training, I suppose. They reflect badly on more competent officers who don't panic so easily. JMO

I can't watch it, there have been too many of these grim videos lately.

I will never, ever get that scene out of my mind. It's people like him that make it hard for real Police Officers. That person wearing a uniform does not reflect on all the good, decent officers we have.

As an actual mother of small children I can assure you I'd be vastly more concerned about a police rapid fire shooting in close quarters around my children and me with clearly no time put into assessing the risk to the people around the man vs an elderly man brandishing a knife in a clearly slow moving wheelchair.

Can you imagine the life long trauma of watching someone shot in the back in front of you? He was shot in the BACK while his wheelchair is barely scooting into the store. He literally couldn't walk or run away from the police on his own. He wasn't going to be snatching up kids while he slowly cruises by while being chased by police....
