I couldn't bring myself to watch the presser live, I'll watch a replay when it's available. After reading a transcript, and watching in (thank you all) while you all typed details and observations, it is really hard for me not to go here: http://blogs.uww.edu/introtolatinamerica/2011/10/03/kidnappings-in-mexico/
We are not in Mexico though. Rich kids there are kidnapped. Here, there has only been one kidnapping of a child by a cartel and the child's family was involved in the drug trade.
Isabel's family looks solidly middle class. In Mexico, lots of things are resolved with money. The cartels know that's not the way things work here and I think they would have picked a different target if it was.
But, it is interesting that the father mentioned "demands". Perhaps the family is thinking along your lines as well.
Here is video of the statement for those who could not see it:http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpp/news/crime/missing-girl-police-hold-news-conference-04252012
Bumping in case someone missed it. At the very end, it shows the parents collapsing in an embrace by another family member or supporter.
These poor people. This kind of thing should never happen. I cannot imagine one day having a precious baby and the next not knowing her fate, having her disappear from her own, little bed. No one should have to go through this.
