Rector says he has to 'man up' for his actions

54f752fa352b8.image.jpg

BULLHEAD CITY — “I have to take responsibility for what I’ve done.”

Those words were penned by Justin Rector, 26, in a postcard to ‘Papa’ from the Mohave County Jail in Kingman. News West obtained the document Wednesday morning through a public records request. “I honestly feel it’s the right thing to do!”

Rector goes on to state, “I’m not covering up for anyone or anything…. I don’t know why I did (sic) and I can’t take it back. All I can do is man up and accept the consequences.”

When Ashley asked what evidence the police have against him, Rector said a security video exists of him throwing a small shovel into a Dumpster

He's responsible alright seriously this is on him but he's not the only one.
I hope a guilty plea from this awful person won't stop LE looking further as well because even though this awful person may have admitted doing this himself he was handed opportunity on a plate. JMO

this is encouraging news.......wonder if he will change plea to guilty.....

Justin Rector, who is accused in the 2014 slaying of an 8-year-old Bullhead City, AZ, girl, said he will plead guilty to the crime.
...
Rector told his father, James Rector, he is ready to take responsibility for his actions.

"I'm going to plead guilty. I was so out of it. I was up for a few days, and I drank a bunch of NyQuil and a bunch of beer to come down to sleep or whatever, and I was out of it," Justin Rector said.

In the call, Justin Rector tells his father he thought he had hallucinated the ordeal but later remembered what happened to Isabella.
...
"They have me on camera at a store, throwing a shovel into a dumpster," Justin Rector said.

More at the link. Hmm...

Rector attempted to distance himself from his father, family and friends in the third phone call that was released.

In the Nov. 14 conversation, he told his father that no one needed to put more money in his jail account to fund further communications.

“I’m not going to call anybody anymore and I’m kicking everyone off the visitation list because it’s too much. I’m not going to do this anymore,” Rector said. “I don’t want to deal with the outside anymore.”

new lawyer appointed for JR as there was a conflict of interest......public defender had worked previously with TG and RF

http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/nevada/suspect-bullhead-city-girl-s-killing-gets-new-lawyer

"Mohave County Indigent Defense Administrator Blake Schritter secured Gavin’s services Friday, a day after lead counsel Harry Moore was allowed to exit the defense of Justin Rector, 26.

((snipped by me for brevity))

“This raises a situation of successive representation, hampering the ability of the Public Defender’s office to cross examine each of those witnesses, and to comply with the ethical duties of loyalty to prior clients,” Moore’s motion argued.

It said neither the state nor Rector objected to his exit."

I was wondering same thing....there's been quite a change in this case given the MSM news that JR has confessed to his dad and friend ((recorded conversations from jail)). Now that he has accepted a new lawyer ((due to the DP being on the table)) it would seem changing attorneys would normally delay the court date further ((extra time to prepare etc)).

IF JR is adamant about confessing, I wonder if his attorney is obliged to honor this ??

Wow, lots of stuff in that article. What's News West?

A perceived conflict of interest may not be the only reason Moore wanted to exit from the case.

During an Oct. 31 phone conversation with his father — a recording of which was released to News West on Wednesday, along with other documents — Rector said he wanted to represent himself and that his attorney didn’t agree with that move.

“He’s withdrawing because him and me don’t agree on me pleading guilty,” said Rector.

James Rector said, “I’m telling you as your dad that the best thing you can do is let Mr. Moore and Heidi (O’Connor) represent you.”

“It’s not about my best interests,” replied Justin Rector. “It’s about accepting responsibility for my actions.”

I'm having trouble reconciling this Justin Rector with the Justin Rector who killed Bella so savagely. It doesn't fit with his criminal history either. At the same time he does sound remorseful.

It's still not clear whether he's actually going to plead guilty. For Bella's sister's sake (and grandma Sue and other family members who loved her) I hope he does.

Thanks everyone for the updates on Bella's case.

I dunno about remorseful. When I first read the article about him manning up and taking responsibility I thought that's probably the only good decision he made in his life. Reading it a few more times I almost think he's on a poor me trip. It's like hinting he wants to do the right thing but the mean old attorney thinks I should try and plead out. Someone talk me into it oh and put some money on my books when youre at it.
Maybe I just can't allow myself to see anything this poor excuse for a man does to be worthy of even believing for a minute. But I'll be waiting to see if he does plead guilty with the death penalty still on the table.

More audio from the recorded phone call. The reporter noted that an attorney (not JR's) said that it could work in Rector's favor in that "...a call like this could show a jury he's sorry enough to save his life." Also noted is that recorded jailhouse calls are not considered confidential.

Havlerson explained the call could be brought up during any sentencing hearing as proof Rector has remorse.

"Before he's even taken a plea, he's so remorseful that he wants to accept responsibility," Halverson said. "That could weigh in his favor."

Also, in today's Mohave Daily News:

Gerald Gavin has been assigned to represent Rector as primary counsel and will appear on Rector’s behalf at the defendant’s next hearing, which is scheduled for March 25. Gavin, based in Phoenix, also has an office in Kingman. Chief Legal Defender Ron Gilleo was appointed in January as second counsel in the case.

Two death penalty-qualified attorneys must be assigned to a defendant charged in a capital case; Deputy Mohave County Attorney Greg McPhillips is seeking the death penalty against Rector.

So far no plea deal has been offered to Rector nor has his attorney changed his plea. His next hearing is March 25.

bbm: in the first article about the phone call confession, JR indicated that he didn't want anyone to put more $ on his books and that the phone calls would end because he doesn't want to talk on the phone anymore to anyone

''In a second call between Justin Rector and his father, which took place on Nov. 14, Justin Rector told his father he didn't wish to visit with or even speak with anyone anymore''

I'm sorry but I'm cynical, I'm not too sure his remorse is genuine. And manning up? Does that include growing the beard? pfft

"Rector went on to explain that he wanted to plead guilty to the crime and take whatever punishment came his way.

He said if the roles were reversed, his family would not want the suspect to make excuses.

"You'd want him to man the f*** up and take his punishment, you know?" Rector explained from jail. "And I feel that that's the right thing to do."
