The red flags seen by the volunteer searchers where in part due to Jerice not being involved in the searching and her refusal to come out and participate. (around 1:22 mark in the video http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpp/news/local/phoenix/shockley-case-11222011)

From what I have read about this case, this is a horror story of red tape, fraud, deceit and death, for a beautiful little girl. I believe after Jerice snatched Jhessye from the loving home with an aunt, that Jhessye was "punished for the trouble she caused". Jessye was decidedly different. She had experienced a life where someone loved her, treasured her, fed her and kept her healthy, provided nice clean clothes and fixed her hair with loving care.
Imagine the shocking contrast when this cherished and protected Jhessye had to go live under the iron fists of Jerice. Jerice was most likely jealous and resentful of the beautiful little girl for having known a better life. I imagine that Jerice began to hate Jhessye because after CPS was called Jhessye was going to pay.. Poor sweet little Jhessye, it appears she paid dearly, with her life. I would imagine that an angry spiteful Jerice could make Jhessye's life a living hell.
The courts in California declared Jerice unfit, said she should never have had children. Yet Jerice and Shirley knew how to work the system. They learned the language to fight and circumvent the laws, and how to milk the system for their rights and reap the financial benefits. I believe that Shirley turned over the other children after Jerice got out of jail, but Jerice should not have had custody of any of those children. Shirley may have broken some laws in doing that, which could account for her fierce defense of her so-called rehabilitated daughter. I am not surprised that Jerice’s children would be afraid to speak the truth to CPS workers. As I posted a while back, Jerice was going to extract severe punishment for any of her children who dared to tell the truth.

The mother is a fast-talking con. My parents and a brother works/worked in social services for decades. I am very familiar with her type as a result. They come into the welfare office shrieking and screaming about their rights in order to get what they want without doing what they are supposed to. My tiny, yet tough as nails mother could quell them quickly but every day a welfare worker necessitates assistance from the on-duty sheriffs due to the antics of a woman or man like Jerice. (And please, most welfare recipients are NOT like this woman. But the one's that are, whew!)

Hi, I am new here, and this little angel is what led me here.

I have been praying for her since the day she was missing, and I received the amber alert over our state lottery system.

That afternoon a man came into the store mumbling about hating people's children, and him being a regular, our manger asked him what was wrong. He told us that his wife was in Laughlin with her sister, and that her grandbaby had gone missing, and Jahessye was that baby.

LEOs all over the state were looking for a woman and vehicle, the description was given by the older children who went looking for Jahessye, immediately. The lottery machines printed copies of the description every 15 mins. for 3 hours. Everyone was looking for this "mystery" woman, who it was said had abducted the baby from in front of the home.

When I read about the cousins contacting CPS, I cry, and then realize that this is the way things work in our state. I have had friends and family that have been Court Appointed Special Advocates for kids that have been removed from their families, as well as working with CPS, and they quit in disgust and frustration. Our state believes that the families should remain together, and they do not enforce any form of rehab or counseling that may be assigned by a judge. In one case, the CASA was my mom, and she went to check on the foster care situation of a child that she was working with, and the foster parents were no better than the parents.

These babies need guardian angels, and there are just not enough of us to guard these angels.

You know what is killing me about these cases? I mean other than the obvious like I have no idea why parents hate their children so much that they would torture them to death...these parents used to call LE or an ambulance once they had killed them. There was aleays that stupid "child fell off of the bed and was blue when I found him/her", but at least they called.

Now, it seems to me, since FICA parents dump them and dont say another word. They just leave their lovelies out in the cold waiting for some poor passerby to finally uncover what they did to their flesh and blood.

Me either. But it is clear to me that in the case of Jhessye, her mother never loved her. She wanted her because she represents a check each month. I don't get how a convicted felon is able to collect welfare monies. Anyone convicted of child abuse should be subjected to weekly welfare checks and no cash aid, ever.

I wonder about Jerice's new baby. I am sure that they tested the baby for drugs. If drugs were found in the baby's system, they would have reason to charge her for the new baby as well.

These poor children - returned to their "mother" - they had no choice. They were trapped in an environment of abuse.

When questioned by CPS, I imagine they would say "No" to abuse questions, because they knew they would have to go back to Jerice anyway. They knew that if they talked, they would get more severe abuse. I wish that CPS would have lifted their shirts to look for fresh wounds. Just talking to kids might not get them anywhere, but if they would take a good look at the child, they may have found the evidence they needed.

There are no easy answers with CPS. I just wish that there were a perfect system, but there isn't. I hope that the older child is placed in a safe environment. I wonder if the cousins will be allowed to take her. Wouldn't it be great if the cousins would be allowed to take the baby and raise the baby with the same love and kindness that they showed to Jahessye? That would be a great service to Jahessye - to have her baby sibling loved as well. At least we know at this point that G-Ma is not allowed to take them!! Thank goodness for small favors.

All the while, Jerice and G-Ma is claiming that this has to do with race. This is not a case about race; this is a case about failure of the system. I do think that media could have covered this case more, but then again, LE was very quiet. I am very happy that they continued on in the background and made this arrest!! Thank you LE for keeping up and trying to get justice for little, beautiful Jahessye.

The man who comes into our store told us that this happened just as he was getting the remodeling job on the basement of their house done. He was working to make it into an "apartment" for Jerice and the kids, as they were concerned about the fact that she did not have a job and kept "hooking up" with loosers.

Regarding Jerice getting the other kids back and CPS not knowing or doing anything about it, I wonder if CPS folks even knew that Jerice was out of prison? Her original sentence was much longer so I'm sure she wasn't even on their radar as possibly having those kids again. I wish there weren't such breakdowns in communication between different agencies, especially between different states.

I agree, though - they should have been keeping tabs on the kids, regardless of where Jerice was.

I personally do not believe CPS returned those children to Jerice. I think Grandma, in her infinite wisdom, did that. If this is the case, I hold CPS accountable for not continuing to follow up on grandma who had custody of them (supposedly) all this time.

I could be way off about this, but I have felt from day one that Jerice having custody of those children was a private arrangement between she and grandma. Shame on them. And shame on CPS for not knowing - if this is the case.

Complete with sending her(Jerice) the welfare benefits she was receiving for them via western union. I believe that's where she was going the day she left in that cab. imo
Good grief, I was thinking of the little one this am, while getting ready for thanksgiving..we have to do it tomorrow, I have to work on Thursday. I had surgery, come back today and all hell has broke loose.

What's with her dad stating he has never "seen abuse happen" ugh...double UGH. Really dude? She was arrested and thrown in jail for it.... for YEARS!!....got out and within a year her baby daughter is missing and suspected dead by her hand. STFU.

I agree Rosepetals, gramma was sending Jerice her cut of the monies meant to benefit the children that gramma Shilrey was receiving to care for the children via Western Union that day. At least IMOO that is what was going on.

as to Jerice's father's statements, I don't give them too much weight. I get the impression that much like Shirley, he was not a part of the children's day to day lives and really cannot know what the he// was going on in regards to what sort of parent Jerice was to those kids.

Jerice Hunter, Jhessye Shockley's mother, who is facing child abuse charges, is being held on bond.

According to court documents released Tuesday, Jerice's 13-year-old child told their foster mom about physical abuse to Jhessye prior to her being reported missing. The child stated that she was told by her mother to lie to police about Jhessye being missing.

The report goes on to say the child told investigators that Jerice allegedly kept Jhessye in her mother's bedroom closet.

Police said Jerice's children who have been in Child Protective Services since soon after Jhessye's disappearance told police Jhessye had bruises on her.

I ask because, talking to grandmas husband, she was in Laughlin with her sister at the time the girl disappeared.

At Hunter's court hearing, her bond was set at $100,000. A status conference was scheduled for Nov. 29 and a preliminary hearing on Dec. 2.

The teenage sister of a missing 5-year-old Arizona girl told police her mother instructed her to lie about the girl's disappearance, that her mother kept the girl in a closet, and that the girl had cuts and bruises before she was reported missing, according to a court document released Tuesday.
The document was released minutes after the girl's mother, Jerice Hunter, had her first court appearance, during which she proclaimed her innocence.
Hunter was arrested Monday on a felony count of child abuse after police say they received new information in the case. They declined to say what that information was, but the court document detailed an interview they conducted with Hunter's 13-year-old daughter.
The teen told police that Hunter had instructed her to lie about her sister, Jhessye Shockley, being missing, the document said. She also said Jhessye had been abused and had black eyes before she disappeared.

In my opinion, I think mommy dearest sold her for drugs. In news reports, it seems to be made clear that she only wanted the kids for the benefits. 13 year old could defend themselves. I could at that age and was very defiant. Afraid of nothing. Mommy was jealous of J being put on a pedestalby her cousins.

ITA...when CPS gives custody to someone, do they just drop the kids off an say "have a nice life?" It's been months since granny gave back those kids and took Jhessye from the cousins. I cannot believe no one ever checked to make sure she really had them or that they were okay...especially after Jerice's accusations against her mother.

From my personal experience, that's exactly what they did. It's a sordid story and it's been 10 years now, but my grands were abandoned by their mother in a vacant building in downtown Phoenix. Their bio father was in prison. CPS picked up the kids, placed them in a temporary shelter, and then contacted me. They told me I had 72 hours to make a decision to pick them up, or they would go to foster care and I may never see them again. Of course I picked them up. All I had was a temporary power of attorney, signed by their father from the prison. Time went on and six months later, my DD (who is an addict) sent the police to my house late one night to pick them up. Legally, I had no recourse. But I got a nice cop who decided, after looking at the big picture, to let the kids sleep and told my DD that no one answered the door. The officer explained to me that she might try the same thing tomorrow and a different cop might chose to take the kids to her. You can bet I was standing in front of the courthouse when it opened the next morning and in front of a judge for an emergency order that same day. Ten years later I have adopted the kids and their mom hasn't been in contact in years. CPS does the least they can get away with.

All three of Jhessye's sisters reported that the child was living in a closet in September 2011, with black eyes and missing hair and cuts and bruises.

This, after her mother Jerice Hunter, found the child wearing a long T-shirt while watching TV with a neighbor boy. Jerice, according to the 13 year old's account, called 5-year-old Jhessye a "ho" and took her into her bedroom where the older child soon heard Jheseye screaming and crying.

The child was then locked into a closet, though the 13 year old said she would sneak her sister food and water to keep her from getting dehydrated. Eventually, the closet looked like a grave and smelled like dead people, she said. Meanwhile, Jerice purchased cleaning equipment which she used to vigrously clean out the closet.

These poor kids must be scared out of their minds that they will be sent back to their mother.

Beat her and kept her in her closet? :furious: If it does turn out that the Grandmother was suppose to have custody of these kids, I hope they throw her azz in jail too. I know these things happen every day but still can't process how people can torture people, especially children.
