Officials have said that Junseok Chae is believed to be the victim of homicide, but his body has not yet been found. They are searching a landfill for evidence connected to the professor’s disappearance.

[...]

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office told 12 News that evidence led them to the landfill, where they found signs of foul play. Associated Press reported that the professor was presumed dead.

Investigators have said he was the victim of a homicide but have not released any additional information about what led them to this conclusion, AZ Family reported. The landfill is near 195th Avenue and Deer Valley Road in Surprise, Arizona.

I cant help but feel like this is related to his research, because of the pandemic. It saddens me to think such a brilliant person is has been murdered. LE seems to have evidence leading them to the landfill so I guess any hope he was kidnapped for his mind is off the table :(

His research can be found here:

His students are saying nothing but nice things about him on reddit and are totally perplexed - apparently they came back from spring break and he was gone and they were simply told he was missing and that's it. He did attend a local church, I'm not sure which one.

They could be looking for a weapon in the landfill vs a body/part. The unwillingness of LE to discuss even his disappearance is intriguing. I wonder if the FBI is involved? Justin Lum is the perfect reporter for this case - I hope he keeps digging. Here is his twitter https://twitter.com/jlumfox10

I've been thinking along the same lines as you Vail.

He appears to own some patents, but I haven't looked into them.

As they say, Godspeed in your search, LE. If he's a victim, may arrests of those responsible come quickly.

Summary of reports -

- March 25th - Chae was reported missing when he didn't return from work at Arizona State University, Tempe.

- March 30th - Police in Shreveport, Louisiana (over 1300 miles away) responding to a suspicious vehicle call, identified the vehicle as Chae's. They contacted Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) on March 30th. Two "Louisiana teenagers", both 18 years old, Javian Ezell and Gabrielle Austin, and a third unidentified person, who were in possession of the vehicle, gave statements which led police to believe Chae was the victim of a homicide. JE is identified as being 19 years old in the DailyBeast article, so he may have had a birthday since, imo.

- LE learned that Chae was killed north of Phoenix, near 7th Street and Carefree Highway, where they found several items of evidence, and his body was placed in a dumpster.

- May 11th - LE began searching the Northwest Regional Landfill in Surprise, AZ.

- July 15th - JE and GA were arrested and charged with first degree murder, armed robbery and vehicle theft. They were extradited to AZ on an unreported date and are behing held in Maricopa County jail on $1million bonds.

- July 17th - Chae's remains and other evidence related to the crime was found at the landfill.

- September 3rd - JE and GA are set to be arraigned.
