Bumping for Kay

Human bones were found yesterday, in an area south of Tucson. I thought of Ms. Read immediately, because one of the tips that had come in when she went missing was that her remains were under an interstate overpass. I always wondered if that tip was real and if she was really in one of the drainage ditches that run under the interstate.

Regardless of if it is her, hopefully some family will find closure now that this body has been found.

Any news out of AZ if this was Mr Read yet? I know this case is kind of cold, but Anita, would you happen to remember where you heard about that tip? It sounds so specific, you would think that LE would try and track down who left it. I was just curious, becasue I do not remember the news about it, but I read up on a LOT of cases, so I may have missed it

Forgive me if this tip has already been discussed- I scanned thru the posts, but didnt see it right away- TIA :)

As of 21 June, still awaiting results from advanced crime lab.
Haven't found any other more recent news.
I, too, was unaware of any tips regarding remains.

Thinking of Ms Read and her loved ones.

Hi Chicogirl. It was mentioned in an interview with Ms. Read's brother. He had come to Tucson when she went missing, in an effort to find her. He said that because of that tip, he had personally driven to and searched all of the interstate underpasses that he could find. I'll try and locate that article.

To the congregation at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, hope is a confidence in things they can't see. In this case, Kay Read's whereabouts. She's the Tucson woman who went missing one year ago.

"So we can't see clearly, the resolution to this, but we believe there will be one," said Billy Still, the church's pastor.

That's why they gathered Sunday, most holding balloons with words of love and hope.

TUCSON,AZ (KOLD) - A blood drive in honor of Kay Read will be held on Valentine's Day.

Police think someone abducted Read from her eastside home in February 2008.

Read was disabled, and her crutches and a brace were left behind.

Police found her burned out van hours after an ATM camera taped a man using her credit card.

There has been no sign of Read in two years.

No arrests have been made, and her family and friends are working to keep her case in the public eye.

They are asking people to give the gift of life in honor of a loved one this Valentine's Day.

The blood drive will take place at the Red Cross Broadway Donor Center at 7139 East Broadway from ten until two.

Kay Frances Read wouldn't open her door to a stranger, especially a man.

A childhood bout with polio that left her disabled made Read an easy target for her abusive, alcoholic father. At 62, she was still distrustful of men. That's why Read's sister, Mary Seagle, believes a woman was involved in Read's disappearance Feb. 14, 2008.

There have been reports at first that the skeletal remains were male but I see Pima Co. Sheriff says the ME just says adult. One local news station changed their story to read adult also. It could be anybody though.

This is not far from where her vehicle was found 2-3 miles approx with info given.

Human Skeletal Remains Discovered

Still waiting for the results of DNA test on those remains. Kay Read is the first person I thought of when I heard remains were found.

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The man suspected of kidnapping and killing Kay Read in 2008 lived next door to her, according to Read's sister.
“I knew who he was,” Seagle said. “I knew he's a neighbor and so I had seen him before. I talked to him as a neighbor of Kay's before, years back.”
Seagle said she looked directly at him during his arraignment. No words were exchanged, but she said he looked back at her.
Vargas remains in the Pima County Jail on a $500,000 bond. He is charged with first degree murder, burglary, kidnapping, and theft of a credit card. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 17.

<<A convicted burglar was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder in the 2008 disappearance of Kay Read, a Sunday school teacher who lived on Tucson's east side.

After about four hours of deliberation, a jury in Pima County Superior Court Judge Kenneth Lee's courtroom found Luis Vargas guilty of murder, burglary, kidnapping, arson and theft, said prosecutor Jonathan Mosher, who works for the Pima County Attorney's Office. The trial began a month ago.>>

<<On Feb. 14, 2008, Kay Read, then 62, who taught Sunday school at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, went missing from her home in the 7300 block of East Marigold Circle near Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

The following day Read's family reported that Read and her van, a turquoise 1996 Dodge Caravan, were gone from her home. Read needed crutches and leg braces to walk because of childhood polio. Both the crutches and braces were left at her house, along with her glasses.

Later that day, her Caravan was found on fire in a parking lot near East Golf Links and South Kolb roads, said Mosher. It was less than two miles from her home.>>

<<He said Vargas, who was homeless and sometimes stayed with relatives in Tucson, was tied to the murder because of fingerprints on a space heater that was tipped over in Kay's living room. The cord was ripped off the heater and that cord was found in the burning van, said Mosher.

Vargas, who was captured on surveillance footage buying $1 worth of gasoline at a gas station, did so shortly before the van was found burning near the station, Mosher said. He said four of Vargas' relatives identified him as the man who bought the gas.

Read and Vargas did not know each other, said Mosher. "It appears that she opened the door for someone who was claiming that he needed help. That is how Vargas entered her home and "overwhelmed" Read, who was described as a small, disabled woman standing at 5 feet 2 inches and weighing 125 pounds. >>
