A man suspected of killing a man in Phoenix and a couple in the picturesque suburb of Paradise Valley refused to say his own name in court on Thursday and then squawked like a bird.

A pre-trial hearing for Michael Crane, the man accused of killing a Phoenix man and an elderly Paradise Valley couple during a 2012 crime spree, was again delayed because of in-court outbursts from Crane in a downtown Phoenix courtroom on Friday morning. Crane, 34, is charged with first-degree murder in the January 2012 deaths of Glenna and Lawrence Shapiro of Paradise Valley and Bruce Gaudet of Phoenix, who were killed in two separate home invasions. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Crane said during a hearing on Friday that he would not talk with his lawyers because he believed the trial was unlawful. "These are your rules, not my rules," Crane said to Superior Court Judge Warren Granville during the hearing.

The case has been delayed numerous times due to Crane's outbursts, shifting legal theories, and difficulty in completing the process where a court can determine whether a defendant is sane enough to stand trial.

Well once again in fine form in the court room Friday, the accused MC, shouted expletives and indicated to the judge that he would speak his piece.

When you read the full story at the link you will quickly discover that MC considers himself a ''sovereign'' citizen and that he has no contract with the court ((common theme amongst ''freemen'')).

MC is delusional (according the Court appointed expert) and is not capable of representing himself ((understatement MOO)).

''According to the health services division of the Arizona Department of Corrections, Crane's mother also attempted to put him on schizophrenic medication but he refused and disappeared. He was later found to be using methamphetamine and heroin, a pattern he repeated throughout his life, the health services document said.
A clinical psychologist obtained by Crane's attorney testified Friday that she didn't believe Crane would take medication voluntarily and that his delusions will most likely interfere with his defense."

Accomplice in Paradise Valley murders gets 2 life sentences; accused triggerman's fate still unresolved - March

A man found guilty of helping to commit a shocking 2012 murder in Paradise Valley was sentenced Friday to two life sentences with the possibility of release.

In December, Barry Hassell was convicted of first-degree murder for being an accomplice in the Jan. 30, 2012, deaths of Glenna and Lawrence Shapiro. The couple, well-to-do philanthropists in their late 70s, were discovered bound and shot inside their burning home.

On Friday, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Warren Granville also sentenced Hassell, 32, on a burglary charge and conspiracy to commit burglary.

He will serve 15 years on the burglary-conspiracy charge first, then at least 25 years for the two counts of first-degree murder. He could be eligible for release after 40 years.

The victims' son, Steven Shapiro, told Granville that he'd hoped for the most serious sanction of two life sentences served consecutively. He said Hassell didn't show remorse or acknowledgement of his actions and was granted numerous opportunities to "do the right thing" after his bail was lowered and he was released with an ankle monitor.

"Rather than sitting behind bars, he managed to massage the situation ... and he continued to commit felony offenses," Shapiro said. "He squandered that opportunity."

Shapiro, a criminal defense attorney, said that despite representing clients in thousands of cases, this was the first time he'd recommended the maximum sentence, which would include Hassell serving the two murder convictions back-to-back.

"His behavior no longer warrants the court's leniency in any way," he said. "He took two lives. There's no way their legacy can be properly honored if the court only recognizes one."

The accused triggerman Crane’s case has hit snags through pretrial proceedings for nearly four years, in large part due to his increasingly erratic spectacles in the courtroom.

But the delays are more emblematic of a complex and subjective legal scheme for determining a defendant’s mental capabilities — one with countless legal avenues to delay a jury.

In 2012, Crane underwent a competency hearing and was deemed fit to stand trial. But medical experts say his mental capacity eroded in the interim.

Previous doctors’ examinations of Crane have yielded conflicting results. Of eight reports spanning from 2009 to 2014, four found Crane competent, three found him not competent and one found him “most likely” competent.

Throughout the proceedings, Crane has invoked several variations of the “sovereign citizen” defense. The court has no authority over him, he claims, and he is therefore exempt from its orders.

His snarling courtroom outbursts have become predictable.

Murder trial looms for man accused of killing Paradise Valley couple in 2012 - August

Kelly Steward, 26, was released from prison to enroll in a residential assisted-care facility, where she will work to "get back on track," according to the prosecutor, Patricia Stevens. Steward pleaded guilty in June 2012 to trafficking in stolen property.

Brittany Beinhauer pleaded guilty to theft charges, served 2½ years and has been released from custody in Arizona, according to court documents.

Shawn Eric Nicloy pleaded guilty to trafficking in stolen property and to hindering the prosecution of Crane. Nicloy was booked into prison Oct. 4, 2012. His maximum release date is Oct. 14, 2021, according to court documents.

Danielle Elaine Rossman pleaded guilty to hindering Crane's prosecution. Her sentencing has been continued until November.

Katherine Austin also pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution and was sentenced to three years in prison.

The most recent article states that Crane had a court hearing on August 19th but I'm not sure if a trial date was set after that.

Defendant in 2012 Shapiro murders pleads guilty in separate case

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/scottsdale/2017/02/23/michael-crane-guilty-theft-murder-glenna-lawrence-shapiro/98312092/

A man accused of murder pleaded guilty on Thursday to burglary and assault charges stemming from unrelated 2011 and 2012 criminal cases, according to Maricopa County Superior Court.

Michael Crane is facing murder allegations in a separate case for the 2012 murders of Glenna and Lawrence Shapiro and Bruce Gaudet, a Phoenix cigar salesman.

A status conference to discuss a possible change of plea in that case is set for next month, according to a court spokeswoman.

Defendant in 3 murders in 2012 to get competency evaluation

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix/2017/03/10/defendant-2012-michael-crane-glenna-lawrence-shapiro-bruce-gaudet-murders-get-competency-evaluation/99002026/

Michael Crane has pleaded not guilty to three murders he is charged with committing in late January 2012, but during one of his many outbursts in court on Friday, he declared the opposite.

"I take the blame for all these crimes and would like to go home," Crane said, pointing his finger skyward.

Crane, 36, is charged with first-degree murder in the January 2012 deaths of Glenna and Lawrence Shapiro of Paradise Valley and Bruce Gaudet of Phoenix. The deaths were part of two separate home invasions that Crane is accused of being involved in. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

His admission in Maricopa County Superior Court during a routine hearing gave Judge Warren Granville pause. The judge told Crane that his sudden change of heart was alarming and, combined with his unpredictable behavior in court, again brought into question Crane's mental competency.

Disruptions and profanity-laced tirades are par for the course when Crane appears in court. Such behavior prompted officials to look into his mental stability in early April 2015. He is expected to be back in court May 19 after his defense team and the state have had time to review the court-ordered mental-health assessment.

Seriously mentally ill or depraved? Triple-murder suspect's competency in legal limbo

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix/2017/09/30/michael-crane-glenna-and-lawrence-shapiro-mental-competency/718451001/

After nearly six years, the judge in the case has been unable to rule whether Crane, 37, is mentally competent to stand trial. Prosecutors say he is. His attorneys say he is not.

On Friday, Crane stood before Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Warren Granville.

Granville had barely completed three sentences to start the hearing before Crane exploded, accusing Granville and the prosecutors of being "inside my brain all the time" and screaming profanities.

What that meant is anyone's guess. He ranted for several more minutes before Granville had him removed from the courtroom.

It was a typical hearing for Michael Crane.
