I wonder if something similar to Maria happened to the teenage Apache Junction Jane Doe in 1992 not so far away. She was also (mainly) Hispanic. But in her case, she seems not to have been ever reported missing, perhaps due to language barriers and illegal immigration, at least on her mother's side, as Apache Junction Jane Doe's father was a American adoptee from Germany.

poor hispanic girl looking for a job to survive and meets with death... perhaps because she is an illegal immigrant her case did not have the coverage or help she deserved... I can only hope that at the time of her death she did not suffer so much ...
