AZ AZ - Martha Anne Overholser, 66, Southern rim of the Grand Canyon, 10 Dec 2024 *from Michigan

Who took the photo of her I wonder?

It is hard for me to imagine her taking this bus trip alone, tho I know people do it.
Just....
No daughter....no sister....no husband.... no one to join her???
NO ONE missing her over the holidays??? (<<<ETA)
Maybe she left a note.
All around, too sad.

There's been no updates in six days and I couldn't find any information from family or anything back in her home state as far as any cognitive issues. 66 is a bit young for dementia IMO, but it's not unheard of, even younger than that.
Early onset is generally defined as under 65. 66 is totally the new 40 in my book too but it wouldn’t be considered particularly young for dementia. On the younger end of course but not too rare. Imo.

I'm 65 and fortunately have already hiked the GC, but if I went on a one day trip to see it now, I would totally be into walking the South Rim trail to soak up all the views. I do an approx 7 miles walk with a steep hill almost every day, it takes me a couple of hours. I would be travelling alone but am not demented or pathetic.

She looks fine in the photo (which I suspect they found on her phone- she may have asked a stranger to take it). From Mather Point it's a totally flat, mostly paved walking/cycling trail west. The trail guide says it's 6.7 miles from Mather Point to the Abyss. Then, 1 mile back the other way she'd be at the shuttle bus stop to take her back to the village.

Unfortunately, there's a pretty obvious hazard along the rim: easy to stand too close to the edge. Or even, perhaps, dropped her phone and tried to retrieve it...

If so, someone will probably find her when the hiking season starts again.

I can't believe no one is missing her?

Her phone was located below the rim along Hermit Road at an overlook called The Abyss, which is located about 10 miles west of Mather Point, a Grand Canyon spokesperson told FOX Weather.

Just reviewing...where are you Martha?!?!?!?

Snipped...
...Overholser was traveling alone from Sault Ste. Marie, in northern Michigan, as part of a commercial bus tour, according to the spokesperson. The bus tour was one of several that operate in the area which bring tourists to the Grand Canyon for the day.

If this was a commercial tour where the heck was the guide?

This has to be one of the most silent investigations I have ever seen. Nothing about any possible family, relationships, social media in addition to what may have been on her phone. She lived somewhere right? What about anything that was found in her home. I would guess someone would search there, should she have returned at some point, or if some one had entered her residence after her going missing. I don't know what to think of this. I mean, is enough attention being paid to this? I just found two fairly recent posts, both say the same thing. But at least a couple of news outlets are looking at it.

Great questions. I'll add; did the tour bus depart on schedule?

This is just so weird. She must of lived somewhere had friends and or family or neighbors that would be missing her.

I wonder if they have been able to trace anything on her phone. They said they found her phone so someone was able to find out and confirm it was her phone.
Still is so strange too that last photo of her… who took that photo?!

I just did a search on her in Michigan and she seems to have other nanes. Maybe people searching for her under her other nanes? Maybe that is why it looks like nobody is looking for her. I don’t know if I can post the link I found on this thread.

Has anyone from Michigan heard about this case through local sources?

I remember reading that Martha may go by another name, more Polish sounding.

Anyone know what the bus tour company is called?

Still no news? You'd think searching where her phone was found would have given police some information.

Anyone finding updates? So strange.

That’s a long and winding 9 miles. There is no info about her having any impairments at all. Maybe she decided to disappear to somewhere else. It was of her own volition. That’s why there’s no info. Moo

I wonder how thorough of a earth did they do in the area where they found her phone.? I wonder how the could not have pinged her phone earlier in the days she went missing? So many questions here

Trained park search and rescue crews did what they could, but searching a 2 mile vertical canyon with inumerable ledges and impassable rock outcrops is a challenge.

The Grand Canyon is not like strolling down a suburban street, it is potentially extremely dangerous. Hundreds of people have died there:
