Scripps News Group Tucson has confirmed that two people died in the incident. The victims have not been identified.

MPD refers to the crash as an "aircraft collision."

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating.

The Marana Police Department said in a Facebook post that it was on scene.

The board said the aircraft involved were a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II.

Preliminary information shows the planes collided upwind of runway 12. The Cessna was able to land and the Lancair crashed nearby and a fire broke out after impact.

The two aircraft involved.

In this image taken from video, law enforcement respond to the scene of the crash Wednesday at Marana Regional Airport in Arizona.

The Federal Aviation Administration called the airport an “uncontrolled field,” which does not have an operating air traffic control tower. Pilots often will use a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency to announce their position to other pilots who are in the airport vicinity. Pilots operating in uncontrolled fields are still required to comply with all federal aviation regulations.

The Marana Police Department confirmed that the two people killed were aboard one aircraft and said responders did not have a chance to provide medical treatment. Police did not identify which plane they were in, but the operator of the Cessna —AeroGuard, a commercial flight training school — said its two pilots were not injured.
