This case reminds me of Gabriel Fernandez. The CPS workers were eventually held accountable, may they rot in hell for all eternity. Gabriel still haunts me.

I'm not sure if I can follow Rebekah's story but I will try my hardest.

On July 27, Rebekah Baptiste was found unresponsive with "severe injuries" in Holbrook, a small city in northeastern Arizona. She was hospitalized and died three days later.

'She was black and blue from her head to toe. She had two black eyes, and they're thinking the cause of death was because of a hemorrhage.'

The girl's father, Richard Baptiste, and his girlfriend, Anicia Woods, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in relation to her death. On Monday, the couple appeared in court, and prosecutors presented some of the shocking evidence in the case.

Doctors who examined the girl said she was malnourished, dehydrated, and appeared to have been tortured. Prosecutors said she had bruises all over her body, had been starved, and had some toenails missing.

...

Could the murder of an Arizona 10-year-old have been prevented?
this link contains interviews with school staff, who indicate all the children would come in bruised and hungry. they were concerned for all of them. Staff is devasted by Rebekah's death. They describe the child as exceptional, a leader among her peers. Some of Rebekah's work is shown at the link where she describes herself followed by a poem written by one of her teachers. I am gutted by this one and wish I'd never heard of this case.

That poem that she wrote and her little biography brought a tear to my eye. I only wonder how many lives she could have touched in great ways had she lived.

the bio was hers, the poem I believe was by her teacher about her. Very moving, you can tell the school staff adored her and tried so hard, their devastation comes through in that poem.

She was a bright light. and now she is gone, way too soon in the most horrific of circumstances. Her legacy in death may just be that by her death her siblings are save. I pray that is true for them.

I realise the school only has good intentions by holding the celebration of life for Rebekah but nevertheless it's as if they feel this will absolve them of any guilt they might feel for not having done more. Too late...
I hope every person in child services and whoever else is responsible for burying this under the mat for what was clearly a case of child abuse, is held fully accountable!

what more should the school have done? Short of abducting the children? They can document all of the times they reported, as mandated, their concerns of neglect and physical abuse. Police can documents all the times they contacted CPS with concerns. Absolve them? CPS needs the absolution and they won't get it from the public. MOO

ETA from what we can tell, they loved her better than anyone and are the most devastated by her death. Who BETTER to host a celebration?

I'm not sure it's to absolve them of guilt. I really think they tried hard to get the information to the people who could DO something about it. My thought on the celebration of life is to help students who might have known Rebekah. This surely has been a shock to them as well. I whole heartedly agree child services has some explaining to do. Yes, an opportunity to heal and reflect and celebrate is how people are able to process and then move forward. Fixing what didn't work is part of moving forward - let's not stand in the way of healing in order to get to the point where fixing can happen. I'm 100% confident those teachers and students will never forget Rebekah. I'm sure they are aching, and I hope the memorial service sooths them.

Yes, the system and the steps NOT taken need to be examined and people need to be held to account if they did wrong. If the system itself was the problem, that needs to be fixed. Immediately.

But, let's remember, the people at fault are her torturers and killers.

“She’s been running away, but when she ran away today and the neighbor found her. She’s just been completely unresponsive, I’m sitting here giving her breath,” Woods told a 911 dispatcher.

“We’re going towards Holbrook. We’re told there’s an EMS station in Holbrook.”

After a dropped call, Woods called 911 again and said she was “putting my mouth around hers [Rebekah] and breathing in her mouth.”

The dispatcher urged her to pull over and let EMS reach them. The call ended and Woods called a third time. That’s when the dispatcher asked her to perform CPR on Rebekah.

“She was black and blue from her head to toe. She had two black eyes, and they’re thinking the cause of death was because of a hemorrhage,” Rebekah’s uncle Damon Hawkins told the outlet.

Omg. This is horrendous. Social services failed this little girl beyond belief. So many caring people called in their concerns so many times. How the h*ll did this little one fall through the cracks? My heart feels sick. 😔
Calls should have been made directly to the local police department. This is criminal behavior. Why are we going through a useless alphabet soup agency when crimes should be investigated by law enforcement? CPS are not trained criminal investigators for the most part, and this is why they fail with such regularity.

The school might have done what I have seen schools do. Call CPS in the morning, tell them that we are not letting the child go home due to the level of abuse, and they need to find placement for the child before the end of the school day. At the end of the day, keep the kids, lock the doors, call the police.

💯 agree!

But first,
the girl should have been taken to hospital for medical examination
to determine the type and extent of bodily injuries sustained.
(When the bruises were noticed)

And then,
hospital should have contacted Police.

My God, the perp looks horrific in the mugshot 😵‍💫
