This is about Rep. Gabby Giffords and a crazy shooter. I do hope this thread will not become a political thread by mentioning other politicians and/or extreme people on TV.

I appreciate what you're saying LaLaw2000, and of course this isn't Palin's fault or Jesse kelly's, but when I see an event advertised by Gifford's opponent advertised as, "Shoot a Fully Automatic M16″ to “Get on Target” and “Remove Gabrielle Giffords”, I do think there are compelling arguments that politicians need to tone down the rhetoric. If that isn't an incitement to violence, I don't know what is. Palin's map is unfortunate as well, and it's ridiculous to think that crazed minds live in a vacuum. They don't, they see and hear just like everyone else, and politicians and spin doctors of all colors need to get real that there are some very unbalanced people out there who can easily be triggered to act out in ways not intended. I personally think this is one of those occasions.

Unbalanced people will find something regardless of how innocent to go off the deepest end. If he is anti-government, he doesn't like LE either. Can't do without LE in this country to keep the crazies from losing it. JMO

People: There is no excuse or blame to be placed on ANY public figure who may have a different political point of view for this random act of insanity.

This is a disturbed individual who caused a great deal of pain and anguish.

Let's not try to convolute into the equation our individual politics at this moment of great mutual tragedy and sorrow.

If you want to talk politics, go to the Political Pavilion, don't do it in this thread.

This is a horrible tragedy and it has the state of AZ reeling. Please be mindful to the families and the state that has lost not only a political leader, but their loved ones.

Nothing like hedging your political bets. I'd bet the farm that in the unlikely event that he actually read both texts, he understood little of either.

With respect to earlier posters, and notwithstanding his possible mental illness, a culture in which leading political analysts (I use the term loosely) can make strident calls for the heads of rival politicians is a profoundly unhealthy one -- not least for those who mistakes rhetoric for an invitation. I hope the injured come through and I expect the usual posturing and backtracking from many as this awful event is unravelled.

And I agree with others that the Speaker's words were timely and heartfelt -- perhaps that message of tolerance for different views can be as successful as its relentlessly partisan counterpart has been in recent months.

It's almost 3:30 pm here in PHX and all the news channels, except NBC cause of the football game, have live broadcasts on. Just reported on KPHO that Gov. Brewer has increased security protection as well as they have ramped up the number of capital police at the state capital. Thoughts and much love to all ya guys down in Tucson.

I consider myself to be a feminist, but I also honor the sacredness of women— the ones who have been given to power of the Creator to create life. And I include those women who, while not haven given birth to a child, through their actions create things that bring life, hope, peace and healing to others. As far as I am concerned, the man who did this is a coward. To shoot a woman point blank in the head, to kill a child in cold blood is a reprehensible, cowardly action. And to kill others, male and female, young and old... I don't care what his politics, he deserves everything the law can give him.

Fox News is reporting a bullet struck and passed through her head, but doctors are reporting that she is able to respond to them at this time.

Correction: she was responding to commands before surgery; she is still in recovery, and coming out of anesthesia (at last report). The Drs are optimistic that she will make a good recovery. What that means, however, remains to be seen.

FOX news is saying 5 confirmed dead, not sure if the child and judge are included or not.

Apparently, she went to Safeway (a supermarket) for a "Congressman on the Corner" kind of event. Suspect went right up and as she was chatting to two older folks, she was shot point blank in the head. He then went on to shoot others. At least three of her aids were shot in the head.

There are several hospitals involved, several police departments, and since it's a federal judge and a congresswoman shot, the FBI and secret service will also be involved, as well as homeland security.

There will be a lot of confusion, a lot of rumors, and a lot of conflicting reports. This is going to impact the entire nation, if not the world, and there will be some far reaching ramifications because of it.

And I'm wondering if the packages sent and exploded over the last few days has anything to do with this...as well as the shootings of other public officials' offices last year.

TY for this update, Cats. Sounds to me like he's had some target practice, which could indicate prior planning, IMO.

Good point about the recent letters that ignited when opened. I also wonder if they're connected to Loughner (or to someone he may know) & the tragic events of today.

Oh - and TY for the youtube video of Loughner's - it's clear that he's extremely anti-government.

I suspect he has been planning this for some time.

I also wonder if he expected to be shot & killed (i.e. martyred for his *cause*) during his assassination attempt on Rep. Giffords, based on his comment of "Final Thoughts" on his *manifesto* video.

The youtube video strikes me as a suicide letter.

ETA: Just went back & read that he's allegedly ex-military. That would explain the accuracy with the weapon.

I'm now wondering if he was suffering from PTSD, and if he was on any meds that he recently stopped taking.
