I know this Sheriff is upset but - his own rant in the middle of the conference was a bit odd. I know he knew the Judge and Congresswoman personally but it just seemed odd. JMO

Such a tragedy. It is obvious to me from reading this young man's thoughts that he was FAR from in touch with reality. I agree that mental illness plays a big part in this awful day.

Thank you SD for your post regarding Kelly's "event". I am speechless. How completely irresponsible. WTH? I wonder if this played a role in inciting an obviously sick young man to act.

If you go to the political thread ,there is a link to a remark in the Daily Kos made by a former supporter of Giffords. He was very angry she did not support Pelosi for minority speaker, and made a statement,"she is dead to me now". It is very chilling. We decided to keep the politics out of this thread,so I urge you to go to read more in the political thread.Who knows what and if anything set this man off.

Words of a would-be assassin, Jared Loughner:

Terrorist

If I define terrorist then a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism, especially as a political weapon.

I define terrorist.

This, a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism, especially as a political weapon.

If you call me a terrorist then the argument to call me a terrorist is Ad hominem.

You call me a terrorist.

Thus, the argument to call me a terrorist is Ad hominem.

.........

Jared Loughner says that terrorist accusations against him are Ad hominem (personal opinions),
....

(Emphasis added; please see full post above.)

Just to clarify, ad hominem means "personal attack", not just "personal opinion." It literally means "against the man" and signifies an attack on the person rather than his or her argument.

It is usually taught as one form of fallacious reasoning, so JL may have been saying that logically, he is NOT a terrorist. I suspect most of us would beg to disagree.

Some interesting info from Mayo.com about paranoid schizophrenia:

"Delusions. In paranoid schizophrenia, delusions are often focused on the perception that you're being singled out for harm. Your brain misinterprets experiences and you hold on to these false beliefs despite evidence to the contrary. For instance, you may believe that the government is monitoring every move you make or that a co-worker is poisoning your lunch. You may also have delusions of grandeur — the belief that you can fly, that you're famous or that you have a relationship with a famous person, for example. Delusions can result in aggression or violence if you believe you must act in self-defense against those who want to harm you.
Auditory hallucinations. An auditory hallucination is the perception of sound — usually voices — that no one else hears. The sounds may be a single voice or many voices. These voices may talk either to you or to each other. The voices are usually unpleasant. They may give a running critique of what you're thinking or doing, or they may harass you about real or imagined faults. Voices may also command you to do things that can be harmful to yourself or to others. When you have paranoid schizophrenia, these voices seem real. You may talk to or shout at the voices."

I have been reading quite a bit of what has been found that Loughner wrote. I am more convinced he is a paranoid schizophrenic than any other type of MI, and, it has been my experience, that paranoid schizophrenics tend to be fairly dangerous when not med compliant/untreated, unlike other illnesses.

And a word here on mental illnesses: as with any other illness, unless it's diagnosed, and treatment taken (which is a choice), it will, as with other illnesses, get worse. It can, as with other illnesses, kill you. What is different about MI is that it can kill someone else, too.

If someone is over the age of 18, they cannot be forced into treatment by their family. Unless they've been deemed gravely disabled, they are not assigned a conservator. And, in most instances, unless there is a clear and present danger, one cannot be hospitalized against their will.

Realize that many, many people are saying "why couldn't we stop this?" It is terribly difficult to treat paranoid schizophrenia, and if the sufferer is unwilling, it is impossible without hospitalization.

And most paranoid schizophrenics believe that the meds they're given are poison, given by governmental employees to...control the mind. Which makes them refuse the meds, which allows the illness to fulminate, which creates more disrupted reality, and the cycle continues.

I know several p'schizos. It is so hard for them, and they have my enormous sympathy. I don't know if this guy is p'schizo...

Sheriff: "Arizona has become the Mecca of hatred and bigotry". I didn't know how to word that earlier to post my thoughts, live here, I've shopped in that Safeway, I know exactly where Gifford's office is, and today is emotionally draining for the town.

Sad day. RIP to all taken down today, extremely sad. Prayers to the families.

PC said they have all their names but two. They will release the names after the PC.

Device is like a metal coffee can, with "odd words" on it. They won't release what it says. The bomb squad will be blowing it up.

Thanks Dr. Knows. I have to believe these 2 things are related. Someone on the political pavilion thread said they are looking for a 2nd person. A 50 year old man who is a "person of interest". Say he's not a suspect(yea right)

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- The Arizona sheriff helping investigate the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others says the gunman may not have acted alone.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said at a news conference in Tucson on Saturday that authorities may have a photo of another suspect.

Dupnik says officials believe a suspect in custody may have come to the grocery store parking lot with another person, and that person was in some way involved.

Also killed was 9-year-old Christina Taylor G. of Tucson.

A neighbor was going to the Giffords event and invited Christina along because she thought she would enjoy it, said her uncle, Greg Segalini.

Christina had just been elected to the student council at her school.:(

Dupnik: Gunman made previous 'threats of death' but not against Giffords

He said the gunman was a subject of, “some police interest in the recent past,” and he has made death threats in the past, but not toward Giffords. There was no reason to worry about the Giffords event in advance, he said. The attack started at 10:10 a.m. amid a crowd of about two dozen people.

The gunman might have planned to shoot himself, Dupnik told reporters
