(Emphasis added; please see full post above.)

Just to clarify, ad hominem means "personal attack", not just "personal opinion." It literally means "against the man" and signifies an attack on the person rather than his or her argument.

It is usually taught as one form of fallacious reasoning, so JL may have been saying that logically, he is NOT a terrorist. I suspect most of us would beg to disagree.

TY for the correction, Nova.

IMO, Loughner seems to be trying to promote the argument that any criticism against his assassination attempt is an erroneous criticism against him - an Ad hominem attack - and that, instead, we should overlook his murderous actions since, according to him, he committed them for a *noble* cause (i.e. the end justifies the means).

I believe he fully expected to die today in that parking lot after he shot Representative Giffords and the other victims. Instead, he's now faced with the potential prospect of defending his heinously illogical, indefensible actions.

I know it's early and we have limited info, but this all sounds right to me.

Dupnik: Gunman made previous 'threats of death' but not against Giffords

He said the gunman was a subject of, “some police interest in the recent past,” and he has made death threats in the past, but not toward Giffords. There was no reason to worry about the Giffords event in advance, he said. The attack started at 10:10 a.m. amid a crowd of about two dozen people.

The gunman might have planned to shoot himself, Dupnik told reporters

Well its a more than alittle disconcerting that he had made death threats before and nothing was done about it,that we know of. Whether it was against Gifford or not.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- The Arizona sheriff helping investigate the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others says the gunman may not have acted alone.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said at a news conference in Tucson on Saturday that authorities may have a photo of another suspect.

Dupnik says officials believe a suspect in custody may have come to the grocery store parking lot with another person, and that person was in some way involved.

I wonder if the second person (father?) is a political "activist" who took advantage of Loughner's mental illness to carry out an assassination and hoped to avoid any association.

Well if they have a photo it will be easy to determine if that's who it is...

In fairness, it's really hard for the law to distinguish between Sarah Palin's crosshairs and serious threats. I mean, I think we all agree the former weren't intended to provoke violence, must less threaten it, but that knowledge comes from a lot of things, including gut feelings, a sense of context, etc. It's hard to write those types of feelings into black-and-white law.

Has this been posted:

"Doctors were optimistic about Giffords surviving as she was responding to commands from doctors despite having a bullet go through her head. With guarded optimism, I hope she will survive, but this is a very devastating wound," said Dr. Richard Carmona, the former surgeon general who lives in Tucson...."

Cypros, I noticed they were all over that car, but haven't a clue yet. I do know that I found the father and mothers names and ages. They are in their 50's. Not sure who is involved and too much is unfolding still.
