Suspect in attack on congresswoman faces 5 charges

TUCSON, Ariz. – Federal prosecutors brought charges Sunday against the gunman accused of attempting to assasinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killing six people at a political event in Arizona.

Investigators said they carried out a search warrant at Jared Loughner's home and seized an envelope from a safe with messages such as "I planned ahead," "My assassination" and the name "Giffords" next to what appears to be the man's signature. He allegedly purchased the Glock pistol used in the attack in November at Sportsman's Warehouse in Tucson.

Saw on tv- In the charges report, it indicates they found in a safe a letter from Giffords to him back in 2007/2008 (I can't remember) thanking him for coming to an event. There was also a piece of paper that had some writing on it that indicated (and I may not have this exactly correct) -

"I planned" "my assassination" "Gifford"

Very crazy... it appears he had some sort of an obsession with her.

Not trying to incite... but if he had an obsession with her since 2007, that is quite a while before a lot of the political incidents people are referencing as possible factors that led to motivation. This really appears to be someone who needed professional help for some time.

I've been living in Tucson for 13 years and next to the death of Officer Eric Hite a couple years ago, this has to be the biggest horrific event this city has faced. It's a tragedy that happens in "other" communities, no ours. I know that sounds a little cliche, but really it's heartbreaking. I've been working and sleeping all weekend, so I think I'm just barely getting a chance to take it all in. Today was the first day I have really had a chance to think about it all and mourn for our city. My heart aches for all the lives lost and affected by this terrible, terrible tragedy.

Probably this doesn't mean much, but it was interesting to go through the websites of the AZ congressional delegation and read their comments, most of them very appropiate.
What struck me was that two of them have nothing at all about this tragedy: Senator Kyl and Ben Quayle.
Quayle is just getting settled so I can give him a bye, but Kyl?? What's his staff thinking? He's the assistant GOP leader, what's wrong with him?
He is highly partisan and I like to think this is just an oversight, still it's a strange one.

Based on the similarity in writing, I think it's him.

I'm over on ATS right now reading some of his rantings. He used the same circular logic in his posts on ATS to try to promote his argument that the Space Shuttle missions are fake.

What I find interesting is that Rep. Giffords' husband is a NASA astronaut on the Space Shuttle missions.

ETA: Anytime any of the posters on ATS disagreed with the premise of his argument, he called them a miscreant. He comes across as thinking of himself as superior to everyone else, and overly sensitive to questions or challenges to his opinions.

The more I read of this guy's writings, the more sure I am he's suffering from either paranoid schizophrenia or bipolar in it's worst form (which has psychosis).

And the more I hear about this guy's life, the more I realize that there was very little anyone other than he himself could've done to prevent this.

I agree that he is likely suffering from some form of mental illness. Since his thought processes seem to be more or less organized (as opposed to word salad), I'm thinking maybe delusional disorder. What do you think?

Some of the indicators of a delusional disorder are:

1. The patient expresses an idea or belief with unusual persistence or force.
2. That idea appears to exert an undue influence on the patients life, and the way of life is often altered to an inexplicable extent.
3. Despite his/her profound conviction, there is often a quality of secretiveness or suspicion when the patient is questioned about it.
4. The individual tends to be humorless and oversensitive, especially about the belief.
5. There is a quality of centrality: no matter how unlikely it is that these strange things are happening to him, the patient accepts them relatively unquestioningly.
6. An attempt to contradict the belief is likely to arouse an inappropriately strong emotional reaction, often with irritability and hostility.
7. The belief is, at the least, unlikely, and out of keeping with the patient's social, cultural and religious background.
8. The patient is emotionally over-invested in the idea and it overwhelms other elements of their psyche.
9. The delusion, if acted out, often leads to behaviors which are abnormal and/or out of character, although perhaps understandable in the light of the delusional beliefs.
10. Individuals who know the patient observe that the belief and behavior are uncharacteristic and alien.
