I understand what you are saying, and any infrigment of anyone's Constitution rights is not worth the trade off.
The man that shot my husband had a legal gun, and some will say he had mental problems. I have no issue with the man having a legal gun, he would have got one anyway! I also want to protect my husbands rights to his gun! Of course I control the weapon, however I do take him out and let him shot with his left hand, he does pretty well.....I assume all risks, and could be the only person injuried, it is worth the price for his freedom!
And what if your husband got control of the gun at home without your control???:waitasec: I fail to understand your logic, because you are letting a brain-injured person handle a gun...
How is that "his freedom", and freedom from what???

But HM I did act and it did not work. :(
THE KEY IS the MI HAS to choose it, want it, or they can refuse it because they have right.
THE LAW HAS TO CHANGE.According to the Law in NYC, they can give them 72-hour observation. IF they harmed themselves, they can get longer in a Hospital depending on your insurance. HOWEVER, THEY DO GET OUT and many then stop their meds. And it starts again..... (they do suffer)
If they harm another person other then self, the jails are lined with those already.

HOW to change it? I am of the understanding that this "rights" conundrum has come about as part of , or stemming from, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and, as usual, lawmakers taking a good thing too far.
(Correct me if I am wrong)
Our government "servants" have a real nack for creating problems as they try to fix them. The trouble about making a LAW is that if any part of it turns out to create more problems , even with the best of intentions, it is difficult to "undo" that part of it.
I would love to tell you about my brother's experiences in a state hospital and the condition of the hospital itself, before and AFTER some of the problematic aspects of a necessary law went into effect, but I'm probably OT already.

just some thoughts as this terrible event has opened up wounds and emotions and discussion in many areas of our national, community, family and personal lives. .

Records detail Pima County Sheriff's contacts with Loughner

Jan. 12, 2011 01:50 PM
The Arizona Republic

"At least three of the police contacts reported between Pima County Sheriff's officials and Tucson mass-shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner involved him calling officers to his family home or to his high school for various complaints, and a fourth involved an alcohol overdose in which Loughner had to have his stomach pumped, according to records released Wednesday afternoon."

There were 12 sets of incident reports totaling dozens of pages.

This paper reports that: one report involved a complaint Loughner filed involving having his identity stolen after he searched his own name in a Google search. And, another report involved a complaint that a couple of students stuck him with a pin at school.

Hopefully more details to come:

I heard a report that Jares's parents have left their home, probably with his atty.Any locals have this information.
Is there any other family? Aunts/Uncles/Grandparents? Just curious. These people really seemed very isolated.

Heard this on TV, just found this link:

Four fired for accessing UMC patient records

"TUCSON - Three UMC employees and a contracted nurse have been fired for accessing confidential medical records.

A release from University Medical Center states they're not aware of any information getting released to public, and the families of patient's whose information was accessed have been notified."

And, another report here:

3 UMC workers fired for accessing records of Tucson shooting spree victims

Arizona Daily Star

"Three employees at Tucson's University Medical Center have been fired for violating patient privacy in connection with accessing confidential medical records in the high-profile shooting rampage that killed six people and left Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in critical condition, hospital officials said.

All the remaining injured patients from the shootings, including Giffords, are at UMC.

"The hospital has terminated three clinical support staff members this week for inappropriately accessing confidential electronic medical records, in accordance with UMC's zero-tolerance policy onpatient privacy violations," says a statement issued by UMC officials this morning."

Families say recovering victims' thoughts with Giffords

ABC Arizona

Both Ron Barber and Pam Simon are still patients at University Medical Center.

""We want to let you know my dad, Ron Barber, is doing well after his second surgery yesterday," said daughter Jenny Douglas.

Barber is the district director for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and while he is healing himself, Douglas said Giffords is at the front of his mind.

"My dad wants to see her, it will help him to see her. I believe they are arranging that. He asks about her everyday," Douglas said

The son of fellow staffer Pam Simon says her thoughts too are with the congresswoman.

"She is a leader this nation needs," said Fritz Simon reading from a statement written by his mother."

I am all for certain Draconian laws. I know this country is all about freedom and rights, but I am a bit more harsh then most. I think people shouldnt have reproductive rights. Forced sterilizations are fine with me. I believe for sure that a lot of people should not have children. I think having a child is not a right, but a huge responsibility to not just a parent but to our society as a whole. You should be raising a productive member of society and not just having a child for self gratification. There should be a screening before you become a parent. You have to go thru a process to adopt, so should having a kid naturally. I dont agree with age limits. But social, economical and mental health issues should factor into having a kid.

I think children are our most precious commodity. A damaged child can grow up to be a killer. Yeah, I know perfect parents can produce a murderer but the majority of abusers and killers were abused themselves. No death penalty, or rehab, or jail can stop people from hurting someone. I live in Texas and we try em and fry em here, but people still kill. However, if we eliminate the inept from the equation then things might improve. I know this will never happen, but a girl can dream.

With what we know about mental illness this isnt the 50's or the 60's with harsh treatments for the mentally ill like electro shock treatments etc. Bring back state hospitals and have a place where people can get affordable treatment. This way they could get help and dont harm themselves or others.

Snipped...

There are many fathers not working today. My son-in-law is one of them - hasn't had a real job in years. He stays home with their child. My daughter is their source of income. Do we feel women who stay home w/o a job are unstable?

Re: state hospitals
This will never happen. The courts have seen to this. Society cannot make anyone go to any hospital unless they pose a danger to society. Before this incident, it doesn't sound like JL did so. So, like before this incident, we, the general public, will just need to deal with things like this.

Since we are trying to find some sense in what has happened, and having watched a former close friend of the shooter explain the person, I thought I would post this as this is what the friend says peaked the shooters interest:

Eriely similar to the rants posted by Loughner on You Tube and his MS/FB pages.

More on reports of LE visits to the house:

Investigators Point to Letter in Loughner's Home
The Wall Street Journal

snip

"Capt. Nanos also confirmed reports that local authorities had visited the Loughners' house on previous occasions—but such visits took place many years ago and were for minor incidents, two of them involving Mr. Loughner's parents."

and it goes on to mention a few in a little more detail

Actually, just as a point of clarification, they do still do electro shock treatments. It's a bit kinder and gentler, but it's still done. And fairly often, too. It's called electro convulsive therapy, and one is put under as in surgery, so it's not quite as barbaric as earlier, but it is still done.

ty, I have a friend/neighbor who suffers from mental illness. She has been hospitalized several times in the last couple of years, sometimes for months. This is particularly hard on her young children. The last time she was in she was given ECT. It scared her, the horror stories from the past evokes an almost visceral reaction to the idea of receiving this treatment.

All I could do as a friend was try to reassure her and support her decision to undergo this treatment in hopes of being able to return home and be a fit, capable mother to her beautiful daughters.

Mental illness is heartbreaking thing for a family to deal with. But we must look at our healthcare and court systems for answers. How can we help our mentally ill? When in the throes of delusion, the mentally ill can be very dangerous, not only to themselves, but to others. It is very difficult to convince someone who is very very ill, that they ARE very very ill and need treatment.

I understand IN THEORY why the mentally ill cannot be forcefed medication if they do not want it. Nor can we force adults via court interevention without some very compelling evidence of immenent harm to be evaluated and medicated appropriately.

How do we keep this from ocurring again and again and again? What is the answer? I wish I knew it.
