I submitted Yasmen Perez as a match to the Doe Network!! I'll keep you all posted.
I am super passionate about this case. It has always caught my eye for a number of reasons and I really hope this poor young lady gets her name back soon!
I never heard anything back about this... should I check back? I don't want to badger the Doe Network folks but they never got back to me, it's been about 6 months now.

  • #345
I e-mailed the person who I was in contact with at DoeNetwork to see if they had brought the possible match before their panel yet. I will update you guys if I get a response.

  • #347
Update from the Doe Network People: She said it did not pass their panel due to the timing, circumstances and the Doe's age appears younger than Yasmen's based on dental development. She said I can still submit it to law enforcement through NamUs if I wish, but from Doe Network's end it's a no.

Thoughts?

I say go for it. Couldn't hurt. Wouldn't be the first time something isn't found because the details don't exactly meatch what is on Doe

Honestly? I'm a little scared to submit a match, lol! It just seems so intimidating to e-mail someone working on the case.

You could email [email protected] at NamUs

Not an employee at Tempe PD but he's an awesome dude/investigator and has played a big role in solving cases. Just make sure to link the NamUs profile.

Okay, so few months ago I spend quite some time going through this thread and collecting all the information provided by this thread, especially user fmw63.
Those posts got removed cause I failed to make it clear enough what my sources are - my bad, I assummed that's obvious cause it was discussed before, and cause it's not really anything else here.

So I collected all the posts, copied them into the notepad.
Went through them multiple times.
Made my own notes, shortening and clearing it out for myself.
Created the clear timeline that relied only on those - no guesses, no additions, just what was there.
Marked all mentioned locations on the map, using google maps.
Checked out those locations using street viewer.
Read through the thread (pretty challenging for me, that was why I worked with it to make it easier to read and digest) again.
Read through my notes again.
Repeatedly got waaay too emotional and shocked by what I've read and what I thought it told me.

I wish I could make it clear and nice, with all the quotes and links to specific posts from this thread but I'm experiencing too many issues with the website and that task got just too immense (dozens of quotes and my posts kept disappearing before I managed to finish typing and organising it, multiple times).

Thanks to CocoChanel I haven't lost those posts forever, but at the time I couldn't add improved and clearer versions. Now I sadly still can't, cause site and my computer keeps bugging, but it keeps worrying me.
Cause in the past I was trying to read through that and figure it out for myself and couldn't. Cause coverage on this tragedy is scarce and often pretty weird.
I really wish to share that again and hope to make it clear enough that most of that is "my opinion", but in my opinion that opinion is just what becomes obvious as soon as all info provided by fmw63 is gathered in one file and read through, just in bit clearer form.

MY ATTEMPT AT ROUGH TIMELINE (based on info available in this very thread, filtered and told in a way that felt the clearest for me):

5:40 AM on the 27th of April victim was noticed by a whitness who called 911.

Same whitness left work at 18:30 on the previous day, same as another worker. Both should be able to notice her body if she was there at the time, so most likely she wasn't.

Her clothes in disarray. Right side of red halter tube top style shirt was displaced exposing her breast. Blue jeans were secured by a zipper on the left sidebut pulled down by approx. 8 inches, exposing dark blue panties. White, dried semen-like looking stains on her right inner thigh.
Right foot with no shoe on (located near the body). White socks soiled on the bottom.

29th of April - fingerprints found on CD's lead to a Woman from Phoenix. She was spoken to about the case.

Woman confirmed that she's listening to music on CD's and showed exact same type of CD case as found on the scene in her van.
Said that she owns second one similar to the one shown but explained that theyre with THE GUY.
She was dating him for a year at the time and was 7 months pregnant with his child, living together in same area where victim was supposedly picked up.

30th of April - Woman was called again. She said that she spoke to THE GUY and that he told her that he "didn't do anything wrong" and advised her not to worry.
THE GUY told the Woman that he and his "friend" picked up a girl who was walking along the street (in the area of 32nd St. and Greenway Rd. in Phoenix). He claims that girl was "acting crazy" as she was high on drugs, then asked them if they knew where to buy coke. THE GUY's "friend" provided her a coke. Then she had a seizure and passed out.
THE GUY also told the Woman that he's going to Mexico and plans to stay there for a while cause he's illegally in US and fears arrest.
He told her that car is parked at a trailer park at 400 W. Baseline Rd.
Woman told the investigator that she will meet with him at the car and agree for it to be searched.
Later she confirmed that THE GUY was driving her car on the evening of 26th of April.
Investigator found two cans: coke on the rear floorboard and sprite on the front driver's area.

Later on that day investigator received a call from THE GUY.

30th of May
- autopsy reports came in, girl had enough cocaine in her system to cause her death.

Me, wondering:

But where are her belongings?
She had just that top and jeans, one wedge heels, fingernails painted light/faded purple, hair band on her wrist.
Any pockets? Any money left in those pockets? No purse? No backpack? No hoodie for the night?

Bold outfit choice for a homeless addict with enough money on her to go for cocaine on a whim.
Or does it sound more like a girl heading to a concert?

North 32 is where he claims that "whitness" picked her up.
400 West - what was then known as the Dodge Theatre.
Black arrow - body dumped.

It seems that there are two "sources" of info (or maybe I should use the word "narrative") in the materials provided by fmw63

First is THE GUY himself, from the call he made to the investigator, and second is his girlfriend, who spoke with investigator earlier, and repeated what THE GUY told her about the events on 26th (and those accounts seemed to vary)

So HIS story for her was that she has nothing to worry about and that he didn't do anything wrong.

In that conversation THE GUY claimed that he was driving ALONE.

While talking with the investigator woman said that she has no idea about the identity of THE GUY's friends cause he wouldn't give her that information. Also added that he's very possessive and shares very limited information about himself.
The only info THE GUY gave her was that he was with "friends", either in Tempe or Mesa.
She appeared very concerned with the fact that her cd case was found next to a dead girl and wanted to question him about it.

CHRONOLOGICALLY IT SEEMED TO BE:
1. Investigator contacted this Woman. She was concerned with the fact that her CD case was found near the body of a dead Girl, and since in the evening of 26'th it was her boyfriend who was driving her car (where her CD's should be) she was very concerned and wanted to confront him about it.
2. Woman called the investigator back and told him how THE GUY explained himself.
3. THE GUY called investigator.

AND, in details, provided by THE GUY (IMO it looked like this, cause I read through that account and this is what I understood he said or/and what he said meant)

1. THE GUY claims that on the Friday night of the 26th of April he was by himself, driving his car when he noticed a girl walking on the side of the road in the area of 32nd St. and Greenway Rd. in Phoenix

But IMO, reading through fmw63's posts we learn that:
CAR WAS NOT HIS. IT WAS HIS GIRLFRIEND'S. SHE OWNED THAT CAR. THIS IS A LIE!
JMO. MOO. But that opinion was formed upon reading that investigator learned that car belongs to the Woman.
Worth noting (IMO)

THIS seems to be HIS SECOND VERSION OF THE STORY: looks like ONCE HE'S ALONE, ONCE WITH AN UNKNOWN FRIEND

2. Girl who appeared to be around 17 yo waved to him and had him to pull over,
3. He offered her a ride, she agreed. She was only speaking Spanish, but according to his claim HE was the one who started the conversation, in Spanish.
4. She told him that she wanted to buy some concert tickets from Hispanic musical group that was coming to town.

And there indeed was a "Hispanic Favourite" concert of Joan Sebastian at the Dodge Theatre on the Saturday (27th) evening.

5. THE GUY agreed on driving her to the Food City groccery store at 40th st. and Washington st. so she could buy tickets. He also claims that as they were heading there he noticed her acting strange, pulling her hair and acting like high on drugs,
6. Girl allegedly then told him that her mother just kicked her out of the house cause of the drug problems, added that she has nowhere to stay and asked if she could move in with him,
7. When they arrived at the store, they found out that they're not selling any concert tickets,
8. Then they headed towards another Food City store, at the 32nd. St and Greenway Rd.

THIS IS THE SAME AREA WHERE THEY JUST CAME FROM - red arrow is where he supposedly picked her up, its near Food City store - so they drove all 16 miles to where the green arrow points at to check if they are selling tickets?

1676081806428.png

And then, despite of many (If not all) those other Food City stores being much closer to the one they supposedly visited, he decided to drive ALL the way back to the store nearest to apartment where he lived with his girlfriend and where he just picked up the Girl?

IMO, looks like he claimed that's exactly what he did. Below current (2022) state of this chain's stores in the area, googled by me:

1676081872472.png

9. According to him, while on the way there (Food Store at the 32nd. St) she changed her mind and decided to not buy tickets but asked if THE GUY knows where she could buy some cocaine,
10. So then he used his mobile phone to call a dealer, agreed to meet with him at 7-eleven store at Don Carlos Ave. and McClintock Dr. in Tempe to pick up the cocaine,

1676081954162.png

He claims that they drove from 32nd St. to the Washington St., then turned back, drove sometime in that direction, then called drug dealer, turned back again and headed to the address McClintock Dv.

That's at least an HOUR of driving around. An HOUR to the very least.

IMO, reading further through the fmw63's I learned that The Guy claimed that what happened later was:

11. As they arrived to the 7-eleven, drug dealer sat in the back seat, Girl was in the front passenger seat and THE GUY was driving,
12. Drug dealer wanted him to drive around while Girl sampled the cocaine,
13. Drug dealer gave her an "eight ball" of cocaine, she sniffed it and started convulsing,
14. Around 8:00 they got scared and decided to drop her off, drove behind a business, close to the 7-eleven, where they pulled her out of the front seat of the car and laid her down on the ground,
15. THE GUY claims the was still alive as they did that, cause "she was still moving",

BUT HE CLAIMED EARLIER THAT SHE PASSED OUT - didn't he? IMO he did.

16. Then they supposedly returned to the 7-eleven store where THE GUY dropped the drug dealer and told him to call 911 for the Girl
17. THE GUY then called his cousin claiming that he needs a ride,

HE WAS STILL AT THIS STORE PARKING LOT, WITH A CELLPHONE IN HIS HAND AND FREE TIME TO DO A CALL FROM PHONE AT THE STORE - in my opinion it's exactly what the things he said he did meant.

There was an emergency call made at the 7-eleven store at 8:15 PM on 26th of April made by an unidentified male who said something unintelligible, and then, asked if he's okay, replied with "yep" and ended the call when caller was asked what's happening there.
It is unknown who made that call or if it was related (at least according to the info from this thread), but it could - employees who would likely notice the girl while leavin work on 26th allegedly said that they left work about 6:30 PM.

18. Short time after this cousin was allegedly dropped at the store, he drove THE GUY to the check cashing store in the area of 32nd. St. and Thomas RD. where THE GUY was left and his cousin took the car and left,

Another map with route suggested by google:
1676082607877.png

19. Then THE GUY called his girlfriend (The Woman) to pick him up.

THE WOMAN SAID THAT

20. THE GUY called her to pick him up at a check cashing store, located at 35th ave. And Thomas rd. in Phoenix on Friday (26th of April) night, and that she arrived there around 9:00 PM.
21. Then they picked up her two daughters who were staying with family members and headed home.
22. As they arrived, home looked like someone broke in as doors were left wide open.
23. THE GUY entered the apartment and found that nothing was disturbed or missing but they decided to stay at hotel for the night for safety reasons.
24. They woke up at 9:00 AM next morning, returned home at 3:00 PM of the April 27th (Saturday)
25. On the 29th (Monday) she was contacted by the investigator and learned about the case. Later confronted THE GUY about it.

She heard from him that he was driving with his unknown friend and that they both picked the Girl up.

26. On the 30th she shared the story THE GUY gave her and went to meet with the investigator at the location where THE GUY told her that her car is. Car was searched.
27. Later on that day THE GUY called the investigator and told him his story.

THE GUY also claimed that:
- girl wasn't carrying anything with her, just had some cash,
- she didn't appear to be a prostitute,
- no sexual act ever occured between them, not even a kiss,
- he had "no idea" how could it happen that she had a dried semen stain on her pant leg (on the inner thigh and on the back),
- when she started having a seizure he unbuttoned her pants to "help her breathe"

All the above counts as allegedly and my opinion, but I believe that anyone who will read through this thread will have mostly same opinion, cause in my opinion, that's exactly what provided desctiptions are describing.
I'm not an insider, I just read through that and tried to do my best organising it in the clearest way possible.

In my opinion is worth pointing out with the biggest red arrow followed by red flag and based on my opinion on the timeline, created by The Guy's stories, provided by fwb63's posts, found in this thread is that:

The CD case owner was not home on the Friday evening and neither were her young daughters.
She hasn't entered her house, he prevented it.

She didn't get inside her apartement till 3 PM on Saturday cause as they all arrive there at 9 PM on Friday doors were wide open and THE GUY got in to check on this supposed "break in" in which, HE claimed, nothing was disturbed or stolen.

MY OPINIONS:

THE GUY must be really popular with his family, since he decided to ask his cousin to show up near the location where he just dumped dead body of a Girl and asked to be left near the check cash store - leaving this car, possibly full of evidence with his cousin.

Gotta wonder why he suddenly felt like he needs to cash some check THEN but didn't before, while he was passing a few through this supposed "ride" with a Girl and friend who was there and wasn't there in the same time.
Was that cause he spend money on cocaine? Or just cause he knew that he needs to keep his girlfriend away from their apartement and that they'll be spending that night at hotel?

He also made sure to point out how she took very little of coke while sniffing/smoking it in the car AND that she totally had to be high before.

MY EMOTIONAL OPINIONS:

He made sure to get rid of a car ASAP (cause incriminating evidence was there)
He made sure that his gf won't come into her apartement that evening (same reason)
He made sure to say that Girl was alive when he dumped her (to not incriminate himself with admitting that she could possibly be already dead)
He made sure to explain his DNA possibly found on her pants.
He was sure that she don't have his semen on her.
He made sure to not incriminate himself in any drug activity.
He made sure to not incriminate a friend.
He made sure to point at Girl being already high.
He made sure to not provide much help with her identification.
He made sure to point out that she had no other belongings, just some cash.

MY SPECULATIONS:

It looks like he took this poor Girl home, and that something happened there. Maybe not an assault, but something.
Something what should not be seen by his girlfriend. I'd guess that maybe our Girl's belongings were left there.
He wasn't alone at first but whoever his companion was, he left later. Possibly went to retrieve the items or clean up the place while gf was riding to pick up THE GUY.
He gave her cocaine but she still wasn't willing enough so he decided that they need to go to buy more? Lying to her that they're looking for the right store that is selling tickets for music concert she wanted to attend?
Optionally that "cousin" was same person as this "friend" and he dropped THE GUY off at the check cashing store and drove back to the apartement.

MY EMOTIONAL SPECULATIONS:

That girl likely didn't knew squat about the cocaine.
Wasn't a user, wasn't a buyer.
Got convinced, tricked or forced to take it by The Guy.
The Guy who wanted to take advantage of her desperate situation and force her to have sex with him and possibly also with his companion.
They Guy who had no concept or consideration of how much cocaine of teenage girl's body can take, cause he had only his disgusting goal in mind.
He proceeded to undress her right away, but her body went into shock and she started having seizures.
He lost his mood and focused on kicking her out of the car and taking actions that were supposed to make it look like he never had anything to do with her.
But it was dark, she was dying and he was all about dumping her in the dark, secluded parking lot so he haven't noticed CD bag falling out the car before he left and started coaxing his gf into believing that her home just got burglarized and she can't enter for her safety, totally not because he left in a hurry and haven't managed to get rid of the Girl's belongings yet.
All that time he kept working on improving his story.
He continued doing that even after he learned that LE connected the dots and wants to speak with him and that's why we have what we have.
He had no interest in letting his gf inside the house, so he didn't.
He had no interest in helping LE identify the girl.

MY RHETORICAL QUESTION:

So, let's check out some of Joan Sebastian's music.
Nice, but does it sound like something that homeless teenage girl would be so eager to see to want spend her only money on tickets - or maybe more like something that adult Mexican guy would be interested in (guy who likely had some 40+ family members, friends or acquaintances who could tell him about that concert and maybe even planned on attending/buying tickets)?

MY FINAL, VERY SPECULATIVE AND EMOTIONAL OPINION:

He made up as much as he possibly could.
Not one piece of info he provided about this girl is useful or accurate.

I would agree with you if she was a white American. I'm Mexican-American and I grew up listening to music like this. Plenty of Mexican girls in my high school (especially ones that were born in MX but came to the US when they were young) ONLY listened to music like this. It's quite common, actually, so I could see her trying to go to the concert.

  • #358
I don't buy all of that crap about concert tickets or half of the stuff that man said. They were either driving around to score at various convenience shops or he just made all of that crap up to explain other movements in case it was spotted on camera. I mean maybe he took her to someone, who knows. Concert tickets my 🤬🤬🤬.

I also agree with the thing about the doors being wide open and not staying there because of 'being afraid'. To me it's more likely that something happened there, they tried to rush her out or whatever, left the door open. He couldn't let his gf back in.

I wish they had left her at or near a hospital instead of the location they did or even in the middle of the pavement on a road, maybe she could have been saved. Out of sight is stupid. That part of the phone call is inaudible - the caller could have said that someone is passing away, but I don't think you should rely on a phone call. I really hate that there are laws in some countries that prevent people from getting help. This girl's physical characteristics to me do not indicate that she was a long term user of cocaine although that's subjective I guess and I imagine there could have been some kind of pressure there, well, we don't know, but overdoses are more common in people who are new to drugs. We don't even know if she took them by choice. Obviously something went wrong :( RIP.

  • #359

I'd love to hear some local, 30-40 yo Hispanic woman opinion about the likelyness of such a girl:
- teenage,
- likely poor or low income family,
- possibly homeless,
- likely illegally in US,
- in early 2002
to be addicted to cocaine of all the drugs. Does it sound likely? Possible? Unlikely? Almost impossible?

  • #360
Sorry, maybe it was judgemental for me to say - because addiction can strike ANYONE, it cuts across all social strata, that is definitely not what I meant... (I don't think that's what you mean either but I just want to make that clear from my post). What I mean is cocaine (and crack), if you are addicted you lose weight, you don't look well nourished. I mean addiction not occasional use, yes I'm aware that some people take it 'socially' or just on weekends, occasionally, etc. I just meant with that drug (and hard drugs e.g. in the USA meth, and heroin, and crack) ravage the body in most (but not all) cases, so I'd expect someone to be underweight and have other signs if they were addicted/long term use as this guy was implying.

FWIW I knew someone who used it occasionally and her dentist told her he could tell, he was a family friend and she was mortified.

Yeah I thought it was odd, I wonder if the coroner can ascertain if it was cocaine or crack, different metabolites? Although cocaine is a party drug, and I did wonder about that re the apartment and the shady statements (and actions) that were made.
