I just read an article that said officials had to kill three mountain lions that were eating the deceased, but they do not think the death was caused by the animals.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a vehicle belonging to a missing Oklahoma man and the arrested man is a "person of interest" in connection with human remains found along an Arizona hiking trail, authorities said. Daylan Jacob Thornton, 21, was arrested Friday night on suspicion of auto theft involving a vehicle belonging to Steven Mark Brashear, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

The identity of the person whose remains were found Tuesday in Pima Canyon in the Coronado National Forest outside Tucson hasn't been established, the department said. An autopsy didn't immediately establish a cause of death.

Police in Oro Valley, a Tucson suburb, said last month they were helping police in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, conduct a missing person investigation for Brashear.

The Oro Valley Police Department said in a Dec. 27 statement that Brashear, 66, reportedly left Bartlesville on Dec. 7 with another man in a gray Audi SUV with Oklahoma temporary plates and that Brashear may have arrived in the Tucson area on the afternoon of Dec. 8.

According to the Oro Valley police statement, Brashear reportedly went to a restaurant and was "picked up in another vehicle by an unknown person and that he has not been seen or heard from since."

Brashear's cellphone subsequently was pinged and reported to be in the Oro Valley area but a search for Brashear and his phone were unsuccessful, the police statement said.

Pima Sheriff's Deputies call 21 year old Daylan Jacob Thornton a person of interest in the case of human remains found partially eaten by mountain lions.

But right now he's charged with auto theft and nothing more.

He's charged with stealing Steven Mark Brashear's car. Brashear's family in Oklahoma reported him missing early last month. And while Pima Sheriff's Deputies connect Thornton to Brashear's car, and the mountain lion case no one's confirming whether human remains eaten by mountain lions were actually the body of Steven Brashear.

We are still trying to determine the manner of death,” said James Allerton, public information officer with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Brashear’s family posted on Facebook, “This didn’t end the way that we wanted it to. The remains found in Pima County trail have been identified as my dad. At this point in time we don’t know much but we can’t share any details because it is an open investigation.

Because a police investigation of the death remains active, the Medical Examiner’s office will not reveal the suspected cause of death, however, a toxicology report tested positive for oxycodone and opioids. Only one of the slain mountain lions’ stomachs contained discernible human remains.

According to the report, predation and environmental elements can be attributed to the “observed taphonomic damage” consistent with a large predator.

With fingerprint and dental comparisons, the remains are believed to belong to Steven Mark Brashear.

Daylan Jacob Thornton was booked into the Pima County Jail Wednesday, Oct. 14 on suspicion of first-degree murder, abandonment of a dead body, fraudulent schemes, identity theft and theft of a credit card, the Pima County Sheriffs Department said.

He's accused in the death of Steven Mark Brashear, 66, whose gnawed remains were discovered Dec. 30 near the Pima Canyon hiking trail in the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson.

An autopsy found opiates in his system when he died. It also found evidence of "significant post-mortem animal activity."

Daylan Thornton ruled incompetent on Dec. 15, 2022. No further updates found.
TUCSON (KVOA) — The suspect in the 2020 death investigation, where human remains were eaten by mountain lions, is incompetent to understand court proceedings, a judge ruled.

[...]

Recently, a Pima County judge ruled that there is “substantial probability” that Thorton “can be restored to competency within the time frame permitted under Arizona law.”

Thornton will be in custody of the Pima County Restoration to Competency Program.

A hearing has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on Feb. 27
[2023].
