:sigh: My heart aches so much for the families of these brave men.

Is there any information on the lone survivor anywhere?

This was just released a few hours ago. He will need a lot of support & prayers too.

If you've read it you can never forget Norman Maclean's book "Young Men and Fire." Every time a firefighter dies I flash back there. It's a non-fiction account of the 1949 fire in Helena (MT) National Forest - the Mann Gulch fire in which 13 young men died. My God, if there's a heaven, please let it be a place where those men welcome with love their firefighting kin - those of the Yarnell Fire Hotshots.

He was delivery equipment according to the local paper and on his return to his crew.
We have a pretty good downpour right now, high winds. This whole county is full of hills and valleys, mesas and mountains. The wind just courses in all directions. We can get sudden wind sheers that tear off solid porches and roll small and high profile vehicles over. My neighbor's solid wood shed, bolted into a concrete slab, was airborne for a good 100 feet several years back, in 1996, half of my roof detached, flipped over the remaining half and landed at the front door, moments before my daughter was going to walk out.
We live with our environment. Many people can handle a year of it and they're gone, too hot, cold, dusty, wet, flooding, earthquakes, drought, fires, predators. You just have to be prepared, secure your property, and CYA.
Throughout the entire county, many people hauled their own water, and many people still do, so most people are real careful about clearing dead vegetation and cutting fire breaks.
You always have a plan. Mother Nature can be a beast.

In addition to the Maclean book I mentioned above the next thing I thought of was the six Kansas City fire fighters who died in 1988, in an ammonium nitrate explosion.

As KC was the closest bigger-type city near me when I was growing up, I spent a lot of time there. So that one was almost personal.

But they're all almost personal, aren't they - these 19 who died will be remembered down through the years, maybe for as long as fires are fought. On each anniversary - on the fifth, the tenth, the twentieth. And every day for their family and their friends and loved ones.

I was googling the Kansas City disaster and it's not that well represented on-line really. A local station did a story three years ago, on an anniversary, the 22nd one. Which means that late this November will be the twenty-fifth year.

They are not forgotten.

My father is firefighter so this hits home. Prayers for all their family members and everyone in the fire community because they are truly all family. And that hotspot lookout, I can't imagine how he feels and how his heart is broken.
