I am trying to understand the deployment of the fire tents (sorry, I don't know the term). I read that it is a last ditch effort and saw on the news how they are used. I have some questions if anyone knows. TIA
What are they made of?
They are only successful if the fire is fast moving? What is considered fast moving?
Do they protect you from the flames only or also from the heat?
What about oxygen? Do the firefighters have respirators too?
If you could guess, was it the intense heat that killed the firefighters? No oxygen? Actual flames?
With all the technology out there, is there a better material that could be used? Or better design of the "fire tents"? Can't NASA or some government agency (instead of wasting our $) develop something that could increase a firefighter's odds to better than 50/50 or am I naive?

This is just so tragic and I hope this never happens again. My heart is broken for these families and for the lives of these young men cut short. I would rather have my house burn down than for someone to lose their life over it.

Thank you for helping me with this.

Speechless. :tears:

The ashes of Sean Misner, one of the 19 firefighters who died last week in Arizona,
were being transported by his wife back to their hometown on Tuesday.

She was in his truck and is pregnant with their unborn child.

On every overpass for nearly 500 miles there was a tribute similar to this.

The pictures are AMAZING! Thank you so much!
I'm very touched by them...yet, not so surprised. Firefighters are a brotherhood, a unity always taking care of their own, and especially their families after death of a brother/sister firefighter.

Nineteen. So sad.

"Official blames leader of 19 firefighters who died in Arizona tragedy for 'serious miscalculation' that lead men to their deaths"

"The leader of the Granite Mountain Hotshot crew, the team of 19 firefighters killed after getting trapped in a fierce Arizona inferno last month, has been accused of violating wildfire safety protocols."

"Eric Marsh, together with 18 of his colleagues perished in the Yarnell Hill Fire on June 30.
Now the deputy director of the Arizona State Forestry Division, Jerry Payne, has said he believes Marsh, 43, ‘violated several basic wildfire rules including not knowing the location of the fire, not having a spotter observing the fire and leading his crew through thick, unburned vegetation near a wildfire.’

“The division supervisor broke those rules and put those people at risk,” Payne told InvestigativeMedia.com."

Lone survivor of Arizona fire crew describes hearing his comrades' phones ringing with desperate calls from their wives... but he knew all 19 were already dead

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ntain-Hotshots-survivor-recounts-tragedy.html

This was also one of the things the rescue workers at the Virginia tech massacre said bothered them the most. The phones ringing in the pockets of the deceased students knowing it was their families worrying about them. So very sad. I am surprised these firefighters phones withstood the fire. God bless their wives, I can't imagine.
