Skull and left femur found (days apart) by dog in wooded area near 121 Lewis Covin Road, Maclenny, FL. Site of dog's find was never identified. Anthropologist opined skull had been in woods for approximately 6 months since death. No evidence of trauma, no dentition (or root structure) present. Age estimated at "over 25" due to fused sutures on skull. Probalbe white male. UNT DNA linked both specimens to same individual.

No root structure indicates either he lost his teeth a long time ago, or he was edentulous from birth.

The only likely person I found in Doenetwork was John Woodrow Gaton, known transient: 4436DMNC - John Woodrow Gaton

Interestingly, while there are literally hundreds of unidentified remains listed with no teeth or full dentures, hardly any missing persons reports list that specifically.

Wow, shame they didn't manage to find the rest of the remains. I wonder if they tried searching the woods with a cadaver dog?
I tried to look for old articles from 1995 about the case but found none. What surprises me is the phrase "Skull and left femur found (days apart) by dog".

So, I guess it was the same dog who went to the same place twice. In our days they will put a camera on this dog and see where she goes. I hope they did everything they could at that time and used cadaver dogs to look for the remains.

The DNA Doe Project page for this Doe says "On September 5, 1995 a dog out for a run in a wooded area along Lewis Covin Road and State Road 121 in Maclenny, Florida, returned to its owner a human skull. Days later the dog brought back a human femur. Authorities were never able to pinpoint exactly where the remains were found."

Which doesn't specifically address cadaver dogs, but that would be the normal thing to have done.

The location given is a rural intersection near what appears to be a commercial farm (nursery maybe) and a residential area and LOTS of woods: Google Maps

New post from the DDP notes that Baker County John Doe is likely Colombian.

I saw this case on DNA Doe Project. The silhouette picture is such a sweet tribute to both John Doe and the dog who found him.

It's no surprise to me they believe he's from Colombia. I had a pen pal on a language exchange site many years ago who was from Peru but lived in Miami. She told me that every Hispanic nationality was present in Miami and that they thought of it as the capital city of Latin America. Of course, he could have been born in Florida to Colombian parents. But I'm thinking he came over and was on his way to Miami, or maybe set out from there to go to New York, and died naturally or was killed in the woods of north Florida.

We would never have known of him if the dog hadn't found him and taken a bone to his/her owner. I was 18 in 1995. I know there's been a lot of water under the bridge since those days and there's no doubt that the dog has since departed the world as well. The picture of their silhouettes together in the woods is a very heartwarming tribute. I sincerely hope they can identify this man and give closure to his family.

New update on this John Doe from the DNA Doe Project.

Genealogy research has determined that the unidentified man has links to the Caldas and Antioquia regions of Colombia, while the cities of Aranzazu, Manizales and Medellín are of particular interest. Surnames in his family tree may include Ocampo, Giraldo, Ramírez or Mejía.

I have now searched for Missing persons in Colombia and their official databases are incomprehensible. I speak Spanish fluently, so the language is not a problem. Does somebody know why Colombia does not publish information about their missing persons?

According to the spreadsheet his highest match is 260.3 cM, which is a very good match, if there are no complications, we can expect a quick solve
Is there a name for the match?

I found someone who was born in Manizales in 1949. The mother's last name is Mejia. The person, at some point in his life, lived in Naples, FL.

I'm currently working on a Jane Doe (endless) family tree. I don't mind volunteering to work on this John Doe.

No name for the match unfortunately. The DDP stoped updating their spreadsheet, so I don’t know if he has any other highest match. But I think you can send a message to the DDP, it might be helpful.
