DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — The Latest on the attack on a restaurant popular with foreigners in a diplomatic zone in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka (all times local):

6:35 a.m.

Japan says that Japanese citizens may be among the hostages being held in Bangladesh.

The top government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said at a hastily called news conference Saturday morning in Tokyo that the government is trying to confirm the information.

He says the Japanese Embassy in Dhaka set up a response center at 2:45 a.m.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters that saving lives is the top priority.

I think the rise in number of incidents with terrorists around the world is that govt's are stepping up raids and arrests of suspected jihadists and it is forcing them to act.Noted in this article.

Gunmen reported to be allied with Islamist group Ansar Islam have attacked a restaurant in the diplomatic quarter of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, with police saying several patrons, including foreigners, are still inside.

Some hostages have been rescued.

Islamic State posts photos it says are of foreigners killed in Dhaka attack

Islamic State posted photos on Saturday it claimed to be of foreigners killed in an attack on a cafe in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where gunmen were holding hostages as police laid siege to the building, news agency Amaq said.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack and said 24 people were killed. Bangladesh police have said two police officers were killed and at least 20 people wounded.

The group claims to still be holding a number of hostages inside the cafe.

So no AK's,just swords and grenades.The grenades were how the security people were killed or injured.The swords mean only one thing,beheadings.Alot of hacking deaths there recently.

Italy's ambassador to Bangladesh, Mario Palma, told Italian state TV seven Italians were among the hostages.

"It is a suicide attack. They want to carry out a powerful and bloody operation and there is no room for negotiation," Palma said.
