On Friday, 27 September 1996, at about noon, the body of an unknown man was found in Lommel. The body was lying on a dirt road, located next to the area called "SAHARA" and in the extension of the street "Nieuwe Kopen".

The man was between 25 and 35 years old and 1m65 tall. He had a muscular build and medium-length dark brown hair. His front right incisor was missing.
The man had several tattoos: on the left upper arm an eagle, on the right upper arm a woman, on the top of the right wrist the name "HERA"' with 5 dots underneath, on the inside of the left forearm the name "MEZDUN", on the left chest a small dolphin. On the left hand, he had a scar in the shape of an "H" as a result of a tattoo that was removed.
He was wearing "C&A" brand black jeans marked "REGULAR FIT STRAIGHT", size 50-51, "NO-EXCESS" brand pink/purple long-sleeved shirt with 2 buttons missing on the top and 1 button on the left sleeve, "GUERRIER" brand white T-shirt of 100 % cotton, size "medium", "C&A" brand white briefs, size "M5" and blue socks.

The victim was violently killed, but this did not happen at the place where the body was found.

Mezdun (or Meždun) sounds like it's short for a word in Russian and Bulgarian meaning "international" which also has Communist connotations, so perhaps he was of Russian or Bulgarian (or North Macedonian) origin. It could be a surname, possibly his own or a son's. Hera is the Queen of the Gods in Greek mythology, and could be a surname of a wife or daughter. 5 dots is probably related to Hera. Greece also borders Bulgaria and N. Macedonia.

The eagle tattoo reminds me of this case. They also seem to be from the same region or origin. I've been searching for the meaning and whether this tattoo popular in Romani men, but I haven't found anything concrete yet.

Also, some newspapers report that the tattoo on his forearm reads “MEDZUN” and not “MEZDUN”. If it is Medzun, it could maybe refer to Medznun i Lejla, an old Arabic story. On the Wikipedia referring to this story: “In popular culture, in the Arabic language, the word Majnun means “a crazy person.” In addition to this creative use of language, the tale has also made at least one linguistic contribution, inspiring a Turkish colloquialism: to “feel like Mecnun” is to feel completely possessed, as might be expected of a person who is literally madly in love.”
