BELIZE - Alison MacKenzie, 43, tourist, from AZ, Rendezvous Caye, 18 Jan 2020

I wonder what the family is referring to as false news? They’ve linked the Belize officials in newscast. Is she meaning the timeframe is false?

Search continues in Belize for missing Prescott woman

The U.S. Department of State has released the following statement: “The welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad is one of the highest priorities of the Department of State. We are aware of reports of a U.S. citizen missing in Rendezvous Caye, Belize. Whenever a U.S. citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities as they carry out their search efforts, and we share information with their family however we can. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment at this time.”

Privacy has been an issue for the MacKenzie family since the news broke about Alison’s disappearance, Cherie said.

“We just ask that people respect our family’s privacy at this time,” she said.

That comment is primarily aimed at media, who have been persistently contacting the MacKenzies from around the world looking for more details to report.

“We’re being hassled by so many reporters,” Cherie said. “We don’t have any additional comments right now.”

She also asks that people not believe everything that’s being reported about her daughter and the circumstances of the disappearance.

“We just want to get it out there that whatever people are hearing on the Belizean news is false,” she said. “They’re reporting false news because they have no direct contact with the police.”

The more I am reading about this case and the more I am discovering, I think that an accidental overdose could possibly have something to do with the disappearance.

Since we are allowed to post her social media I wonder about this post. A profile picture. Some people compliment her and she responds, her boyfriend does and she does not respond, why? Alison MacKenzie

maybe she was sitting beside him when he commented ... I mean who knows

Are you able to elaborate on this, please?

Anyone remember the movie where two divers were left in the water by the diving boat and crew?

Who knows if Alison died, and the crew decided to leave the island and dump her body far away. Then, came back, and acted as surprised as everyone else by her disappearance...

Sooo...this popped up and like many others...I’m scratching my head: o_O

Missing since the 17th but there’s a check in for the 19th for a different Caye?

I wonder where her phone is? With her, or someone else?

Well, gee, I had heard about that but not seen it myself. I can't see it on mobile. Very interesting.

If someone has her phone and did that, say trying to leave a review....that would mean she did not fall in the water with her phone!

If someone did that with her laptop, they have quite a bit of access to her life, but why?

1. Did she go to bed with her boyfriend or did he go ahead and she was going to join him after?

2. Did she possibly arrange or plan to meet with the captain and things went bad, I.e he was expecting something she wasn't willing to give?

I really want to know more about the final hours before she went to bed and why haven't any of the other people staying there that night said anything at all to the media? Did they really not hear anything at all? Were any of them concerned with her behaviour?

Also regarding the drinking....my family would say I don't drink, however I do drink maybe 2 / 3 times a year due to the social situation I am in. I also do tend to get quite tipsy (ok maybe drunk) because I dont usually drink.
Also the sister states she had never seen her sister drunk before, doesn't mean she hasn't seen her drink. Just that she hadn't ever seen her really drunk to the point she could believe her sister would fall in water or go for a swim in a drunken state of mind.

If one is going to take a walk in the middle of the night in a place where there are no lights, you would take your phone with you since it has a flash light wouldn't you? We know that she was seen at 10pm, and we heard the captain escorted her back to the tent at 2:30 am. So I would think she had it with her when she vanished.
So...how did the phone end up on another caye on the 19th?

Well agree in that if I was going out of my tent, I would take my phone at any time. But, if I was going anywhere after dark on that Caye, I would definitely have my phone for my flashlight.

But, this check-in does not mean it was done with her phone. It could have been done by anyone with any access to her account and you don't have to be in that area to do it. So, essentially you just need log in info.

The question is -why? Was it an oops? Did someone forget whose account they were on?

To be honest, I can't duplicate this. Can anyone else? I can't see any check in's at all for her. So either, her account has been locked down or possibly this is visible on a different device or software update?

Ok - I have figured out this mystery on the check in. There was a post by a family member that tagged Alison and showed them as checking in to caye calker. I had forgotten about the tagging possibility. So no, this isn’t a suspicious incident. It is Something that happened when family were trying to get the story out.

Ah - makes sense. And that is where the tour left from I believe (according to Ragamuffin site). I still wish there was an LE update re: her phone.

There's a link to an article at the beginning of the thread where it states that all of her belongings were still in the tent the morning she disappeared. It doesn't say "except for her phone", so I'm going to assume that it was also there and she didn't have her phone with her.

If she was drinking and was acting irrationally as was stated by the police, as told to them by the crew, what the collective "we" here at Websleuths would do if walking around at night as rational people, would not be the equivalent of what an irrational person would do IMO.

When you see the pictures of this place and visualize how really teeny tiny it is, and how little cover there is for anything to be hidden, it makes it all the more mysterious that there's not been a trace of her.

I think she was under the influence and went into the water, either by accident or just deciding to dunk her toes or whatever. I just don't see how, in such a small area, there was some drug cartel who nefariously swept in and out, apparently soundlessly, and not one other person there saw a thing. Or heard anything alarming. Likewise, some other sort of attack on her. Not one of the other people there heard a thing? They obviously aren't sleeping like a pile of puppies, but pretty close.

I think the captain allegedly leading her back to the tent may have been CYA for the tour company. As others have pointed out, Mr Occam knows that alcohol/inebriation + nearby water can be a deadly combination.

Her fairly recent arrest is troubling and leads me to that conclusion.

What I don't really understand is the captain saying she was acting irrationally (I believe that was the word used, correct me if I'm wrong) ok so she was acting irrationally, but really quietly? So quiet no one else (as far as we know) woke and neither did her boyfriend sharing a tent with her.

And then she supposedly went and got into the water and drowned. Again nobody hearing. Not impossible but weird.

I just don't put being irrational and very quiet in the same sentence if you get what I mean. Very bizarre.

This case more than most leaves me desperate for answers...especially for the boyfriend and the captain. So frustrating!

never say never
I've done it and I can't swim!

ETA: yes I was stupid but the water is so inviting

Did you leave your shoes on the beach? Or your glasses, shirt, phone, watch, towel .. or anything at all?

This one is so puzzling due to the smallness of the island and the fact others were there too.

I am a seasoned camper and I can tell you if I needed to use the restroom in the middle of the night, I would wake my husband up to go with me. Even in the US and a campground Full of campers. If I were on a dark island in the middle of the night, 100% I would make him go with me.

I know not everyone is the same, but in all of our Caribbean travels, never would I dream of even walking the beach alone at night. And that’s at a resort with staff watching 24/7. It sounds like she was somewhat well travelled so maybe she was more comfortable in being alone?? It does make me think if she was acting erratically, that she wasn’t in her sensible mind and did something she wouldn’t normally have done.

I’m curious if there truly was a “watchman” (singular) or there there were several. On the resorts we have stayed at, there has always been someone posted on each end of the resort and they keep watch. We’ve walked the beach at night and had them come check on us. This sounds like a legitimate tour company and if the captain saw her, it makes me wonder if someone was watching 24/7. If yes, I don’t know how she could have had an accident. I mean she could if someone wasn’t watching like they were supposed to.

Sadly in the end I think it was an accident. Again because of the size of the island, I can’t see many scenarios happening. I can see drug deals, but I agree with someone else I think they would be way more under the table and she wouldn’t have actually seen anything.

The thought of a woman walking alone in the middle of the night or taking a swim alone boggles my mind. I would really like to know the last time she was truly seen. 10:30 or 2:30? What was the time the very last person went to bed?

I can see a walk on the beach right before sun up, but not 2:30am. Let’s say that’s the last time she was truly seen, whatever she did was between 2:30am and 6am. It wasn’t like a stroll right before bed??

I did have the thought of suicide too. Not that there was any history, but due to the losses she has had, it’s not out of the question for me either. Just a really strange place to do it and HOW would be the question. But did she take an overdose or pills, thus acting erratically and then head to the ocean to pass?

Overdose of pills and/or alcohol and then passing out near the shoreline and being washed out to sea is my best theory at this point. Whether intentional or unintentional- I don’t lean too strongly one way or the other. But she had a daughter who she seemed very close with, so I would say it’s more likely accidental.
