(L-R): Imane Mallah, Wafae El-Arar and Kaoutar Naqqad were found dead in a hotel in Belize.
''According to police, housing staff attempted to contact them a number of times on Feb. 21 after surveillance footage showed them entering their rooms on the evening of Feb. 20 and not exiting the room again. After staff received no response by the morning of Feb. 22, they used a master key to enter and police say the women were found motionless.

“The bodies exhibited no signs of injuries,” Belize Police Commissioner Chester Williams said. “Police also saw inside the room what appeared to be vomiting beside each female.”

The cause of their deaths remained unconfirmed, but first responders said the women were found with froth on their mouths, suggesting a possible drug overdose. Police also say they will be testing to determine if carbon monoxide poisoning was a factor.'

'Police in Belize told ABC News on Wednesday that the women died of acute pulmonary edema, a condition that occurs when fluid suddenly fills the lungs and causes trouble breathing.'
"Their bodies exhibited no signs of injuries," Williams said. "Police also saw inside their room what appeared to be vomiting beside each female."
Additionally, police said alcohol and gummies were recovered from their hotel room.''

"It's very frustrating because when you hear possible OD, automatically you attribute characteristics to that person, but that could be the farthest thing from the truth," El Khalfaoui said. "When I graduated, Imane didn't want me to go to a party, she said she didn't want to go because there would be drinking there. That was the kind of person she was. So when they said that it was OD, I will never believe that was true."

Wafae El Arar, 26, Imane Mallah, 24, and Kaoutar Naqqad, 23, were found dead at a resort in Belize by hotel management after the hotel said nobody answered the door for housekeeping for two days in a row.

''Ira Novoselsky, a city councilor for Revere and the landlord for the Naqqad family, revealed to that DailyMail.com that the community has been 'stonewalled' by the Belizean police and San Pedro authorities.''

''Pathologists concluded that the women could have been dead for around 20 hours before they were found on Saturday.
A Level 2 Travel Advisory for Belize was issued in December by the Department of State due to a heightened risk of crime.
The young women's deaths are the latest in a string of violence related to the tourist hotspot.
Boris Mannsfeld, a Colorado developer who moved his business to the country in 2010, was found shot to death on Friday at his villa.
The Department of State issued a Level 3 Travel Advisory for Belize City, urging tourists to reconsider travel.''

''An autopsy confirmed they died from acute pulmonary edema, but a toxicology report is still pending. Today, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams revealed that surveillance footage showed the women taking a bottle of tequila back to their room. Investigators are now trying to determine if tequila played a role in their deaths.''

Probably ethanol poisoning. If I ever go overseas to a resort I will be bringing my own alcohol from the states. I’ve read too many horror stories like this. MOO
Not ethanol but methanol. We have seen that before with cheap booze substituted for real liquor in some areas. The symptoms could be similar to what we have heard. But could be many other things as well. Tragic for sure.

Belize Fire Chief Colin Gillett previously told Belizean media that carbon monoxide poisoning had been ruled out following an investigation.

However, last week, Chief Environmental Officer Anthony Mai told 7NewsBelize that abnormal levels of carbon monoxide were found inside the hotel.

Sources close to that investigation reportedly told the network the levels registered about 500 PPM - which is dangerously high and poses a serious health risk.

'Shortly after the Massachusetts women were found Belize's police commissioner said carbon monoxide poisoning and possible overdoses were being considered.'

''Nearly a month after their deaths, Gian Cho, the executive director of the Belize National Forensic Science Services, confirmed the women died of fatal exposure to carbon monoxide.

It is believed that the heater in the room leaked out the deadly gas, causing the women to die from acute pulmonary edema, officials said.''

Very sad and frightening. I think many thought initially it was CO but then they said no it wasn't. Now they are back to it. It is my understanding (and I am NOT a doctor) that CO deaths are pretty easily determined, ie it is fairly obvious. So maybe the delay here is just various officials in Belize getting on the same page. Belize is a beautiful country but its government is not exactly top notch unfortunately.
But CO poisoning like this is terrifying. There is just no warning. You go to bed and never wake up.
