''Some go to Florida, others to Palm Springs, and the more adventurous go to places like Mexico, Costa Rica and Belize. What visitors to the latter seldom realize is that these places aren’t Rosedale, North Vancouver or Westmount.''

HIPPIE HAVEN: One of the cabanas at murder victim Marty Thorne’s Belize property. TRIPADVISOR
''Masseuse Marty Thorne, 65, was a seemingly free-spirited woman from British Columbia who couldn’t wait to return to her beloved Belize, where she had lived for years and owned the Raw Spa Cabanas.''

''On Monday morning, a handyman discovered that Thorne was nowhere to be found on her property in Bullet Tree Village, Cayo District, near the border with Guatemala. He called the cops around 7:30 a.m.''

''.. Matus was found dead with her American boyfriend, Drew DeVoursney, 36, on May 1, 2017. They had been strangled to death, and their killers expected them to burn in a sugar cane field being cleared.
Their murders remain unsolved and are likely to stay that way.
Odds are less than 50/50 that the murder of Marty Thorne (motive unknown) will be solved.''

''One person is in custody in relation to the case, and police are looking for two more suspects.
The spokesperson said they believe Thorne may have known the suspects, and only her cellphone was missing.
They did not release an exact motive or cause of death, pending an autopsy.
Police say Thorne had been living in Belize since she was a young adult, and had returned to Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. She went back to the Central American country around six weeks ago.''

I wonder if someone was living in her place while she was away. A squatter, maybe?

Handyman did it. Jmo

''On Monday, November 17, investigators formally charged 25-year-old Gian Eldred Waight, a construction worker from Cayo, with Thorne’s murder. Waight was located in Guatemala, where he was detained and handed over to Belizean authorities.''

''Thorne is remembered as a kind, gentle woman whose character, friends say, would never provoke such violence. Those close to her remain puzzled about what could have led to the attack.''

''Police have not yet released details on the motive''
''Guatemalan authorities have confirmed the detention of 25-year-old, Gian Eldred Waigth, a Belizean citizen wanted on a murder warrant issued by the Belize Police Department. Waight was intercepted at La Aurora International Airport during a layover over the weekend. According to officials, immediate coordination with INTERPOL Belize has been initiated to facilitate his return to face charges.''

'Investigators believe the killing was a robbery that went sideways''

''However, being beloved counts for little in Belize. The small nation is notoriously violent and consistently ranks as one of the deadliest places on the planet.

Global Affairs warns on its website: “Belize has one of the highest per-capita murder rates in the world. Drug and human trafficking, organized crime and street gang activity are prevalent. Violent crime occurs frequently. Incidents include: murders; armed robberies; burglaries, and assaults, including sexual assaults.''

'Global Affairs also warns against going out after dark. Border areas like Bullet Tree Village (population 2,124) are particularly prone to violence, the feds say.''

''Not first Canadian slain

Several other Canadians have also been murdered in Belize, most notably semi-retired Keswick realtor and mom-of-two Francesca Matus, 52. Matus was found dead with her American boyfriend, Drew DeVoursney, 36, on May 1, 2017. They had been strangled, and their killers expected them to burn in a sugar cane field being cleared.''
