GUILTY Belize - Superintendent Henry Jemmott, shot/body in sea, San Pedro Town, 28 May 2021 *arrest*

July 9 2021 rbbm.

''In an exclusive interview with The Toronto Sun, Hartin claimed she’s the victim of a corrupt system that has robbed her of everything. Her former billionaire former father-in-law is the richest men in Belize and arguably its most powerful.

“I’ve been very vocal about the corruption in Belize. I lost my business (she was a partner in a resort development with her ex). They have done everything to ruin me,” Hartin told The Sun.'

''Worse, she has now been stripped of her visitation rights with the children she shares with Andrew Ashcroft and they have been whisked out of Belize to the Turks and Caicos.''

''Most recently she had been holed up on Caye Caulker but is now in hiding at an undisclosed location because she fears she will be killed or have an “accident.”

''Attorney Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley and Jasmine Hartin
Hartin was represented by attorney Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley. While Director of Public Prosecution Cheryl Lynn Vidal is prosecuting the case. The Canadian National, the mother of twins and former partner of Lord Michael Ashcroft’s son, Andrew, is accused of fatally shooting Superintendent Jemmott on May 28, 2021, while they socialized at a pier south of San Pedro Town.

Hartin explains Jemmott had invited her, and her then partner Andrew Ashcroft for a drink at a nearby pier, but Andrew allegedly decided to have an early night. Hartin accompanied Jemmott and alleges that the senior cop wanted her to get acquainted with a gun, as she had been attacked days earlier on the mainland. She claims that after handling Jemmott’s service weapon, she gave it back to him when it suddenly went off, shooting the senior officer behind the right ear. Accused of Manslaughter by Negligence, Hartin maintains the incident was a terrible accident. It is also alleged that what may have led to such an unfortunate incident is the combination of alcohol and drug use.''

She’s hard to believe.

Isn't this a whole new version of the story? Now Andrew was involved earlier in the evening as well? I'm sure he'll testify to that - assuming it's true. And she was attacked a few days earlier? Lots of new details. Convenient.

But then I have never bought what this lady's been selling, not from Day1.

''With so much riding on Hartin's account of Henry Jemmott's shooting, "48 Hours" decided to consult an expert opinion about whether her story lines up. David Katz is a former DEA agent, and a veteran firearms instructor who taught at the FBI/DEA Academy in Quantico. After Katz was shown portions of Hartin's interview, he conceded that "it's a troubling story from so many aspects, starting with … why she's practicing … in the dark?" However, Katz says that Hartin's description of where her hand was when the gun went off leads him to believe it, "absolutely," could have been an accidental shooting. Prosecutors have not released what forensics, ballistics or other tests authorities have conducted.''

''Henry Jemmott was beloved by his family and the people of Belize whom he had spent his life serving. The Jemmott family, including his three sisters, does not believe Hartin's account of what happened the night Henry died. Henry's sister, Cherry Jemmott, pictured right, said, "She gave so many stories, so who knows when she's telling the truth?" Cherry Jemmott doesn't believe the shooting was an accident and says her brother was shot behind the ear, "execution-style."

Still hard to believe that any law enforcement officer would unholster a service weapon after any substance use -- lacking a credible threat.

The tale is so weird on so many levels.

''Embattled Canadian socialite Jasmine Hartin is claiming that Belize cops schemed to murder her and then cover it up as a botched prison escape.''

''Now, Hartin alleges cops at the jail in Belize City unlocked her jail cell and said she could leave.
But Hartin told the cops: “I know you will shoot me in the back.”

“They came to me and said, you’re free to go. I went to walk out the front door and they said, no, no, no, go out the back door,” Hartin told the Mail.

“I knew exactly what that meant. The police are notorious in Belize and it’s a trick they use. They typically either shoot you dead or arrest you again and hit you with more charges for trying to escape.

“I said, not a chance in hell. I know exactly what you’re up to, you guys will shoot me in the back. They started laughing at me and said, you’re smart Hartin.

“They also wouldn’t give me food or water and they made me clean out the toilet with my bare hands, it was disgusting.''

''Jasmin Hartin has been dealt a losing hand.
The 33-year-old mom of two originally from Eastern Ontario is in a bitter custody battle with her former common-law husband whose father happens to be the wealthiest — and most powerful —man in Belize.''

“There were no drugs,” a source close to Hartin exclusively told The Toronto Sun. “The ‘drug’ they found that night on Jasmine, the lab results came back in June … it was acetaminophen (Tylenol).”
The source’s claims the “chain of custody” of the drugs is missing, and the evidence was not logged. The source added that officers also made false statements that are contradictory in “each of the discovery files.” In fact, the source added, the possession charge was laid before the lab results came back.''

''The dope accusations oddly arrived just before Hartin’s custody hearing. Take a guess how that went? Andrew Ashcroft whisked the kids off to Turks and Caicos.
While there have been occasional phone calls, Hartin has not seen them in eight months''

''Louisa Chiaramonte, PR for Jasmine Hartin: “The people of Belize deserve better than a police force and justice system that are willing to ignore law and morality to please one man. These manufactured charges and orchestrated attempts to destroy my reputation and smear my globally have given me a world stage in which to expose them. My children will know the truth and I will continue to use the international audience they have tried to pit against me to fight their corruption and expose the backdoor deals that have robbed two children of their mother and countless Belizeans of justice.”

The matter related to the common assault charge was adjourned to March 8. The substantive case- that is the manslaughter by negligence case, is expected to start in April.''

Thank goodness she didn't leave, just in case! I did not know this case is still ongoing. Fellow Canadian here. Will follow this.

''The lawyer added: “She is very heartbroken and she is very, very, very remorseful and if she wants the Belizean people to understand anything or know anything about this is that she is very, very, very sorry. And, that she has been giving the survivors some benefits.”

Whereas, of course, if she'd been in Canada - a very wealthy, well-connected mother of two small children - hanging around a park in the early morning, drinking, giving shoulder massages to an off-duty policeman (as socialites so often do) then shooting him point-black in the back of the head, that wouldn't attract any attention at all. Perfectly understandable, Canadians would all say. Give this pretty woman a break. Brad Hunter wouldn't even report on it. (irony).

Wow, I'm surprised she pled guilty. I was starting to get Letitia Stauch vibes from her.

Channel 5 Belize reported the sentencing hearing is expected to happen on 31 May.

As Hartin pleaded guilty, the judge is expected to give the non-custodial sentence.

from your link
"During Tuesday's hearing, prosecutors presented Judge Ricardo Sandcroft with a file of evidence which was to have been revealed if the trial went ahead." Italics mine.

Perhaps it was not so much remorse, perhaps it was fear of publicity about what was in that file.

I am cynical about this lady and her earlier pr campaign to try to paint herself as the victim of the "currupt" Belizean legal system. And I am cynical about the enthusiasm of certain journalists to promote that storyline.

I do not see her as a victim, not at all. She had every privilege and opportunity to do some good for her adopted country, instead....

At least, now, finally, she will face the consequences of her actions.

''Hartin is expected to be sentenced on Wednesday in the death of San Pedro Island police chief Henry Jemmott, 42, and a father of five. She pleaded guilty on April 26 to manslaughter by negligence.

It is unlikely she will be jailed, but in Belize, nearly anything seems possible.''

''Sources told The Toronto Sun that if there is no jail time — as expected — and Hartin gets her passport back, there will be an immediate effort to get her out of dangerous Belize and retrieve her two children.''

“Her only objective at this point is to see her children, [in addition to Jemmott’s death] this has been the primary tragedy for Jasmine,” Weinstein said. “She has been deprived of seeing them every step of the way.”

He added: “She is going to do everything in her power to get back into her children’s lives and be the absolute best mother, the mother she wants to be.”

I'm a bit surprised at the possibility of a non-custodial sentence here.

Would be interesting to have a peek at what the prosecution was planning to bring to trial.

Also expect that any custody battle in the face of a manslaughter plea will be an uphill battle for JH, especially in the UK.
