Billy Ray Cyrus: 'Hannah Montana' destroyed family

  • #21
Remember those picures Billy posed with Miley for??? Bad, bad, bad judgement. And they gave me the creeps. Totally inappropriate. But Disney probably put them up to that, too.

From the outside looking in, this is when I knew Miley was going down the wrong path. So did the media - many outlets wrote about how upset the country was at those photos. Yet, they allowed it to happen. :(

Very sad. Hindsight is so very 20/20. When our kids are concerned, it is heartbreaking.

No TV show or fame can ruin a child - if they have a solid family life and parents that keep them grounded. While there are many child actors who have "issues", there are some that do not.

For example, I remember reading about Emma Watson (from the Harry Potter movies) not knowing that she was worth millions b/c her parents kept her in the dark about it and gave her a $75/week allowance as a teen: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20438345,00.html

Other child actors/performers that seem well-grounded: Jodie Foster, Natalie Portman, Jonas Brothers, etc.

I do think the pressure of a child with so much fame can take over and the entire focus for a family - and it takes a lot to keep that family sane, functional, and a nurturing/supportive environment.

(above bbm)
Wow! My son got $25 a week, and that was just 5 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad her father has regrets, but it bothers me that he seems to be blaming others. I have a 6 year old, so we have Disney on a lot over here, and it seems like they make a lot of efforts to keep their shows "innocent". I don't think the show (or his decision to put her on it) is what ruined the family, and I feel like he (or the media?) is giving Disney a bad name and trying to shift the blame. He even thinks Satan is attacking the family??? Okay.

I think his daughter's ego is out of control, and I think he's always encouraged it. I don't know them, its just my opinion - but that's just the vibe I get from her. They really play up the "daddy's little girl" thing in the show, and I just feel like she's been spoiled rotten her whole life. Little girl wanted her own TV show, and rich daddy got it for her. It was just an added plus that he was brought back to fame along with it, when he hadn't really much been heard of since 1993!! I don't think she's a very good singer, and I think her acting is average. I'd be happy if she disappeared from the spotlight, but then, some other girl will just come and take her place (for worse, probably).

I like Disney's other girl star, Selena Gomez, much better - but who knows, she might end up a wreck herself in a few years.

maybe this will seem harsh but here goes: oh boohoo to Billy Ray. The man was in the industry YEARS before he pimped out his daughter, so he's is no innocent bird here... he knew what he was getting into by his own experience in the entertainment industry.

Even before Disney got Miley, she was a brat... I remember him doing an interview with one of those tv magazine shows (ET, maybe?), making her a part of it when she was a teeny tiny thing, and OMG, she was running around all over their ranch being a rude little kid... not cute... RUDE. Billy Ray has been putting that child out there on the public stage for attention since she was a baby. (How much you want to bet he courted Disney to get her on...).

Hey Billy Ray: you have to own the blame, too. And hey, it is not just Miley you are dealing with... you let your tween, Noah, create a lingerie line for kids and work in the industry as well.

Oh heck yes I agree one hundred percent. He had been in the industry for years. He knew exactly what to expect for his daughter to go through.

He was just too busy being her "friend".

But having gone back and rereading that article, I agree he spends much of the time (other than the statement above and one other statement) displacing all blame. That it's not his fault and that every poor choice in her life was in PRed as his fault? That makes my nose crinkle. Yuck.

You posted this before I got the chance. I immediately thought of the photos too. ITA. Totally inappropriate!

Well, Alyssa's brother on Who's the Boss showed off his privates on some Webcam. LOL. So um, whatever floats his boat. And then Kirk Cameron is a bit weird nowadays. He got a girl fired from Growing Pains because she posed for Playboy, he refuses to kiss another girl in a film because he's married, and on his website, he had a quiz called, "Are you going to hell?"

It seems that for a lot of these child/teen stars, if they don't end up on drugs, they are just weird in the head, like there is something off. But I don't think you can really compare Miley to teen stars of the past because back then, it was just Tiger Beat that wrote about stuff and they sugarcoated everything; now you have the Internet and nothing is a secret. It does seem like the bigger the teen star, the more likely he or she will be messed up as an adult (see: Corey Haim) and Miley is definitely a big teen star.

It is sad in a way that the whole country has been waiting to see whether or not she becomes a train-wreck since Hannah Montana premiered. You never hear people talking about future train-wreck Dakota Fanning. I remember when HM premiered and if she does become a hot mess, it's going to be weird to know that I watched it happen.

But anyway I look at all her scandals in 2 ways...One, this could be the worst that she'll be and she'll grow up fine or these scandals could be the beginning of a downward spiral. I've heard rumors of her doing cocaine and heroin; obviously just rumors, but she is in Hollywood where there is plenty of drugs. It wouldn't surprise me at all if she tried that stuff at least once.

By weird do you mean devoted Christian? Kirk Cameron is a very vocal Christian and does not do things that he feels is wrong. (such as kissing someone else because he is married)

The "are you going to hell" issue is also a Christian issue.

IMO being a Christian does not equal weird.
He's done well for himself and is a great example. IMO he does not belong in this list of wayward child actors.

I had forgotten this one. There is something vague here that makes me think "icky".

Maybe I'm just over reacting given my personal history as a teen. But I don't like that pic for some reason.

As much as Miley Cyrus annoys me, I don't think she's done anything that a lot of normal teenagers don't do....she just happens to be in the limelight. I mean, how many of us drank when we were underage or experimented with drugs or had sex too early? I'm not saying it's right, I am just saying more teenagers than not do these things.
Ummm, yeah she has. Most normal teenagers don't go posing for semi-nude photos in their father's laps... have people forgotten about that??? It wasn't that long ago. So I feel Billy Ray has contributed to the monster Miley's become, yeah she's out of control. She's trying to project a bad girl image to shed her little girl one. He was a better parent to her on the show, he actually stood up to her.
Moreover my objection to the Hannah Montana show (besides showing lack of respect for adults), is that she wasn't good enough to be just a brunette singer, she had to hide herself behind a blonde wig. What kind of message does that send to little girls???

I totally agree with these statements!!!

Oh yeah I forgot about those photos until I read your post. The one where she was barely covering herself with a sheet and posing with her dad and her hand on his leg...EW! Wasn't she 15 when those photos were taken?

From the Vanity Fair article:

“That’s just my personality. I don’t get shaken or stirred up over anything. Which can be a problem sometimes. I’m just, like, so no emotions. I just don’t let things faze me. I’m very much like my dad. My dad’s like this.”

Interesting statement.

Also blanket picture at that link.
It seems very suggestive for a 15 year old but maybe that is just me.

All IMO

I also don't think that her parents are necessarily bad parents, at least her father is now realizing his mistakes. Hindsight is always, always 20/20. Hopefully Miley is just going through a rebellious phase. She's still very young, I have hope she'll be just fine.

Agree 100%. I think Miley has a good head on her shoulders and I think she's going to be just fine!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Billy Ray Cyrus says the Disney TV show "Hannah Montana" destroyed his family, causing his divorce and sending daughter Miley Cyrus spinning out of control.

In a December interview published in the Feb. 22 issue of GQ Magazine, Cyrus said he wished the show that launched his daughter to pop stardom had never happened.

Oh please. Where was Billy Ray gonna work? Home depot? Let him complain but Miley has kept a roof over his head, food in his belly, nice vacations, nice cars etc...
He should shut up now.IMO

Billy Ray made a lot of money from his singing career. They were living on a 500-acre farm right outside of Nashville before Miley got Hannah Montana; and that definitely had to cost a lot of money. Even if Miley had never gone into acting, they still would be living an upper class lifestyle. It's not like the family would be on welfare (or anywhere near it) if Miley had never gotten Hannah Montana.

As to the photo with Miley and Billy Ray, I do not get that uggy feel from it described by Kat, nor do I consider what she is wearing to be semi-nude as LinusK suggests.

I think Miley is being a teen and experiencing growing pains. I think she's used some poor judgment lately and hope she learns from these minor mishaps before they become major mistakes, As to Billy Ray's regrets, well, such is life, who among us doesn't have them. It is what it is. You make your choices and then you try to live with em.

There are other photos taken during the same shoot where she was bare-backed and only wearing a sheet, kinda like Casey Anthony's flag photo. The one in her father's lap still looks like how you'd pose with a boyfriend, not your father, and she's still got a bare middrift. Still looks creepy.

I never understood the flap over those photos. I actually think some of them are very beautiful.

I think Billy Ray is going through some rocky waters right now with the demise of a long marriage and he is feelings raw and vulnerable and thinking out loud in this interview about regrets and what-not. But he strikes me as an optimist and I'm sure he'll be okay.

I've always had a warm spot for Miley. I think, thus far, she has handled growing up in a super magnified fishbowl with amazing grace. Prayers for the whole family!

I was commenting on the photo shown upthread where she is clothed. Bare midriff is something I can live with as long as cleavage isn't spilling out into her father's lap.

I was thankfully unaware of the other photo you described. I find the sexualization of teen and younger girls that is so rampant nowadays regretable. Would there be such photos if there were not such demand? Would there be such demand if there were no such photos? I wish I had the answer to that one.
