Bin Laden Dead #2

Just putting a safe reminder out there. WS does not allow personal attacks, and while this issue is a heated issue, please attack the post not the poster! I would hate for this thread to get shut down.

A senior U.S. official said the U.S. has been denied access to bin Laden's wife because she needs medical attention. The official characterized that as a stalling tactic. Asked about the U.S. request to see bin Laden's wife, a senior Pakistani security official told ABC News, "With what face can they ask that now?"

They are mad because we fooled them. They were protecting him and now they worry about repercussions from what is left of the group. It is disgusting. Of course they knew he was there.

I'm watching JVM and she is taking with relatives of people who died in the attack and showing bits and pieces of the memorial. I wish I could be at Ground Zero to pay my respects.

JVM broke news about the information that the Seal team brought back information that AQ had the idea of doing something to the railways on Long Island on the 10th Anniversary of the attacks as she was standing with Leslie Haskin, a Tower One survivor.

Here is what Leslie said when JVM asked her about her thoughts on that:
"I don't know that its scary so much as... I think with all the celebrating, people are forgetting that those of us who lived it, we haven't moved on. And there's always... the sense that something else is going to happen. And the thought that it could start over again, I don't know what to do about it."

JVM apologizes to Leslie for shocking her, and then Leslie continues: "I don't know if I'm really shocked about it. Its almost a confirmation... it doesn't go away. I mean you have to have to have been in that building that I was. You have to have lived it and walked in my shoes and smelled what I smelled. I was homeless afterwords. I have posttraumatic stress. I couldn't work, I couldn't even think. All I thought about was OBL. All I thought about was surviving in that building. And then now you get a glimpse that maybe its over. I don't think that I'm shocked, I think that it is a confirmation that something is always going to knock the wind out of us."

Leslie Haskins is my hero.

I think this may have already been brought up, but photos were released of some other dudes (blood, gore, and all). What's the diff in seeing OBL's photo? Why is the US holding him to a higher standard.

Don't get it - don't get it at all.

WARNING = GRAPHIC!

Hi Mel, I don't get it either. We even watched S Hussein {sp} get hanged, right. Seeing that happen in video was much more startling to me than looking at the blood in these photos IMO.

Do you think the guy in the white T shirt is OsumaBL? I don't think any of these guys look old enough to be 54. He had gray in his hair and beard that I don't see here. ???

New details: The Seals faced gunfire for almost the entire time of the operation, but the virtual video shows only a group of Seals firing in the open outside the compound. The gunfire stopped only when they burst into bin Laden's room (only OBL and his wife in room).

Clearly, it appears the only gunfire is by the Seals. Now, I do not have a problem with this, nor the way the operation was carried out. I just wish the Administration would say so. What's to hide? It's obvious. IMO, this may be more about not offending some Americans.

Also, video report says they believe bin Laden was dyeing his beard to hide the gray. Well, maybe he did get out every now and then.

Virtual Video:

On CNN I heard neighbors often saw a very tall man walking around on the top deck/portico ???

Military expert: Pakistan must have known where Osama bin Laden was hiding

t1larg.pakistan.military.cnn.jpg

Pakistani Police guard the sealed main gate of the bin Laden compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan on Tuesday, May 3, 2011

...Based on those years of knowledge, she is convinced the military knew bin Laden was there. That he was hiding near Pakistan's military academy in Abbottabad is the strongest clue, she says.

In a society where the military and intelligence agencies keep tabs on its citizens, Pakistan would not allow anyone living so close to its elite military academy to go unexamined, she says....

IMO, it's obvious they knew. They may have been afraid of becoming targets if they turned Bin Laden over.

They really anger me right now. They have a lot of nerve criticizing our mission there when many times when we notified them in advance, they obviously tipped off the target in advance.

The fact of the matter is, they need our billions so the Taliban doesn't completely take over via a coup but they have sympathies or some kind of relationship with terrorists, kind of how the Saudi Royal family is the official governing body of Saudi Arabia, but to prevent a coup and possibly due to tribal affiliations or lingering sympathies, they grant the terrible religious police a ton of power there.

The atrocities committed against especially women and children in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan sicken me but the corruption and the tribal, backward culture of many of the villages of those countries makes me feel hopeless about ever being able to make any kind of a difference over there.

I feel like our military is engaged in an endless game of cat and mouse as tribes shift their support from democracy to Taliban and back and our boys over there can never really know who to trust. It feels very hopeless to me at times. If we can't get the support of the population, it will be almost impossible to stem the tide of extremism and the terror it embraces.

Leslie was inside Tower OneLeslie H. and JVM mention that Leslie takes the Long Island train, another reason why that news affected her so deeply.

Leslie didn't get to talk to Obama. When Jane asked her if she feels cheated, Leslie says she does and:
"I do think that we are the forgotten bunch of people.

I mean there's several ways to lose your live. There are the people that lost their lives on 911 that lost their lives physically and there are those of us who lost their lives in different ways. I lost my home, I lost lost my job, I lost my mind, and I almost lost my son.

I think that there are others out there who need to feel that its going to be okay. We also need the president and the armed services to reach out to us as well. We are just kind of in the back."

Leslie tells JVM that she was on the 36th floor, on the side where the plane came in at the moment of impact. She had been an insurance executive, and the business went belly up after the attack.

JVM asked Leslie what she would have said to Obama
"I don't know. But I would have liked to have heard him tell me, 'I'm sorry for your loss." Leslie says that she supports Obama, but that, "I just want to know that he sees me too." And that this is so important because Leslie "is a survivor."

Leslie says much more that unfortunately I don't have time to transcribe. I wish I did. I'm watching a playback of this episode, but if you can watch it, this episode is a good on.

Jane said that she would have Leslie back on the show, and I really, really, really hope she does.

JVM also said that there will be a new documentary coming out called "Rebirth". Here's an article about it. I sounds really good.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/01/24/us-film-rebirth-idUSTRE70N0MJ20110124
"PARK CITY, Utah (Hollywood Reporter) - The impact of 9/11 on the United States has been filtering through our movies for nearly a decade now and will undoubtedly continue into the next century. At this point though, few if any have measured with more clear-eyed optimism and compassion the journey of those most immediately connected to the event than Jim Whitaker's "Rebirth."

The director achieves his goal of a "human time-lapse" where he follows five survivors and family members as they come to terms with grief and injuries and struggle to forge new lives."

Americans are fascinated by the anonymous U.S. Navy SEALs who daringly raided Osama bin Laden's Abbottabad, Pakistan compound this week, but one canine commando is attracting especially fervent interest.

According to the New York Times and the British tabloid The Sun, a military dog (not pictured) was strapped onto one of the assault team members as he was lowered out of a Black Hawk helicopter and began the operation that killed the notorious terrorist on Monday. But who is this canine hero?

Do we know that they are trying to hide something? I really hope they aren't either.

Maybe its just because the information is being released slowly, we don't know if things are being held back to hide them of they just haven't been released yet.

I'm watching my recording of Vinnie and he is saying that only one of OBL'S men had a gun. I'm not watching as close as I should, but I'm assuming that this information is out there because it has been released by the govt.
I don't have a link at hand, but one shouldn't be hard to find. Late last night, Wednesday night, I was falling asleep with the TV on CNN when I heard a government spokesperson describe the details of the killing. He was very frank and upfront. Seals shot and killed a man in the guardhouse. He was the only one in the compound who fired on the Seals. All of the shots fired inside the house came from our side. Osama's 19 year-old son was shot to death on the staircase. He was unarmed. Inside Osama's bedroom, a woman rushed at the commandos, and she was shot. The next shots were fired at Osama, one in the head and one in the chest. The spokesperson also made it very clear that weapons were in Osama's bedroom, though he had no time to use them. The attack was swift and clean (my words). The words roused me from my near slumber, and I was taken aback, but impressed, by how frank they were. I'll look for that llink now.

It makes sense to me that the firefight was extremely brief. Element of surprise. It would seem to me that they'd use teams - enter all buildings as quickly as possible and simultaneously - in constant communication with each other - and each team peels off to secure the building, per room, while the rest of the team moves quickly forward to clear the rest of the building in like manner.

Very quick. Not a 40 minute firefight. But, a 40 minute operation.

They had a lot of house to cull through for evidence, family members to bind and secure, video evidence to collect, corpse to remove & identify, helicopter to disable...and that probably is what took up all the time.

Keep reading various numbers for this ops' team. Have read various estimates - 24, 30, and as many as 40 from Seal Team 6 were dropped in bin Laden's garden.

Not only did they get him, they got a lot of housecleaning done too.

What impresses me is that they could be there, after landing helicopters, searching for 40 minutes, without the local LE being notified or alarmed ... top secret, quiet helicopters...

Reading that the pieces of that helicopter left behind ... are of concern.

JMHO

Fox News:

40 people arrested in Abbottabad.

Al Qaeda will release to the public audio tape of Osama bin Laden made "last week."

Al Qaeda apparently has enough proof that bin Laden is dead without seeing his head on a stick.

Waiting for you Bin Dead post of the day! I miss those crazy smilies.
Did they go back to work?
:(

In honor of the families and survivors and heroes who attended the subdued ceremonies at Ground Zero yesterday, the revelers composed themselves for the day. :innocent:

Also, it's finals week @ NYU.

(so ... yup ... back to work ... but still happy)

Boy they are wanting their time in the media aren't they? First they will show the tape of obl then they will publically name the successor. Then the successor will make his statement. All with appropriate waiting periods to keep everyone's mind on them.

Sorry didn't read the entire thread.

This is why I don't think he's dead. I think this whole thing was a morale boost.

And why was the boost needed this week? Is it because the Lakers keep losing?
