Blaine Owen age 17 went missing 9/22/25 runaway inspired by Into the Wild

The Magic Bus is gone. Authorities removed it because too many people died or were injured trying to get to it.
5'9" and 120? On a 17 year old boy? Is he ill? Or does he have an eating disorder? My sons were about 185/190 at that age and height.
he has always had a lean build and this is one of my biggest concerns trying to live off the land and back pack is he litterally has no reserves. As I mom I was constantly making him snacks and high calorie food because he burned so many calories daily. And trying to remind him to pack extra and keep some in your car.

I hope everything will be okay. I had a teen leave for awhile, we had no idea where he was. He did come home, we didn't ask any questions, just let him come home. He was working at a ski resort for the season.

how much $ could he get out of the bank? (you do not have to post here, none of our business) however he needs food and gas- maybe oil/car repair?- the amount of resources he has is a possible limiting factor ...does he have a credit card you can track? TX-AK by car does not lead to New Orleans.... would he try to get a job on a boat? (another way to get to AK) Is his car up to a long trip? Was he really going to Alaska or just "away?" It is already a bit chilly in AK- 30s over night and days getting shorter...

The bus is located at the Museum of the North in Fairbanks Alaska as far as I know.

This is a place I would definitely reach out to, to be on the look out. I can't imagine he would go up that way and not want to see it.
There's a wonderful long article about its restoration and conservation here: The ‘Into the Wild’ Bus is Now in a Museum

It occurs to me that even a naive teenager would realize that with winter approaching, it is not a good time to head to Alaska. Chris McCandless did spend some time in the Sierra Nevadas. Could Blaine have gone there? Or, considering his car was last seen in Louisiana, could he have gone to the southern Appalachians? It's an area that doesn't get too cold in winter and where he may believe he has a shot at living off the land.

A couple of ideas: You still have his laptop, right? I wonder if you can get it forensically examined and see locations he may have googled. Or perhaps with the aid of your local PD, you can get a search warrant to examine his Google history. They do this all the time in criminal trials, but I don't know how easy/timely it would be to get one in this circumstance.

Moo..this is really not a good time of year to go on a 'walk about'. Hope he is wise enough to stay in the southern States..moo

Has he always had a interest in adventure? You mentioned he has talked about Alaska for a few months but before then had he expressed a desire to travel at all? If this is a sudden change in could be brought on by stress about what he wants to do next or someone he's been in contact with may be responsible for convincing him to leave.

Yes, they did, a few years ago. I think it's in a museum now.

Thanks. I have a bit of a soft spot for Chris. He seemed like such an exceptional young man would have done something great were it not for some bad luck. Yes, I know he made some poor decisions but he took good care of himself for a long time and those who encountered him formed strong connections.

Anyway, Blaine is too young to go off on his own. May he return safely. Chris did wait until he graduated college.
