Body of missing Oscar Hernandez,13, found in Southern California [Oxnard] - Soccer coach charged

“The family was aware of his destination, and I’m going to kind of leave it at that as part of the investigation,” he said.

“All we can say is that our investigation led us to this point here … in the unincorporated area of Ventura County,” Hamilton said.

“He didn’t need to be treated like an animal. That was my son,” his mother, Gladys Bautista, cried out in Spanish

A soccer coach identified by the family of a missing 13-year-old boy as the last person who had contact with the teen was questioned about the disappearance and booked on an unrelated sexual assault charge, according to law enforcement sources and court records.

The man in custody, Mario Edgardo Garcia Aquino, 43, was arrested by LAPD detectives Wednesday morning on a warrant issued earlier that day in an unrelated sexual assault case that was investigated last year by the LA County Sheriff's Department.

According to the criminal complaint in the 2024 investigation, Garcia Aquino faces a single count of assault with intent to commit another felony, which prosecutors allege was the attempted rape, sodomy or oral copulation of a man.

If he had a sexual assault case from a year ago, WHY did he have access to children? Aren't there any working with children checks in SoCal?

Yes, there are. They do background checks, take fingerprints and run them. I worked in the local school district and even 'volunteers' had to have this done.

Even if a parent wants to work or help in after-school programs, they have to be cleared, give fingerprints, etc.

I am not sure what kind of a 'coach' this was. Who he was working for. Maybe it was not what the parents believed it was? Could have just been a man hanging around the soccer park, calling himself a coach and offering kids advice, soccer gear and jersey's etc?

It said that they met through an 'afterschool soccer program'. That sounds organised to me, not just some creeper approaching kids playing on their own.

He must have found some way to beat the system. Every organised after school program is required, by law, to verify that the workers have no sexual assaults or violence on their records.

How to start an After School Program in California: Step-by-Step Guide

All of your new staff must undergo a background check and have qualifications determined by the state of California. These requirements will ensure the safety and well-being of the young people in your care.

  • California law mandates background checks for individuals who have contact with children in community care facilities, including after-school programs.
The Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club, for instance, runs all potential employees and volunteers through the DOJ Livescan criminal background check system.

    • These checks typically involve fingerprinting and a criminal background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ).

I'm still wondering if the parents were under the assumption that it was an organised sanctioned after school program.

I seriously doubt that any organised program would allow young kids to travel at night to a coaches home to paint jersey's. I think it would have to be an event that parents checked out, not just the kids taking a train and going there alone. No formal, sanctioned after school program would be ok with that, imo.

That makes me believe that the parents didn't really know much about the so called 'program.' Only what their son told them, imo. I do think it was probably a creepy guy that set himself up as a 'coach' by taking equipment to a park after school in the afternoons, and promising the kids they were going to build a team.

It's this wording:

Oscar and his coach were introduced to each other through an afterschool soccer program at Whittsett Park in North Hollywood, according to the family.

Introduced to each other. That sounds like more than one guy.

Right, but it doesn't say he worked as an employee of the after school program. It says they were
"were introduced to each other through an afterschool soccer program."

I could be wrong. But I do not believe this guy was actually employed by this after school program.

This guy may have hung out at that park, played soccer there and befriended the kids. He may have conned the employees of the soccer program---claimed to be a coach from somewhere else, offered to help out and donated jerseys etc. Like weaselled his way into the group?

I think we are going to hear from this soccer club eventually, denying that this guy was an actual employee.

I think there are going to be a lot of very firm questions asked as to how he got access. The system of vetting exists for exactly this reason. It shouldn't have wiggle room to allow people access to children just because they're helpful and donate things.

The suggestion that other members of the team had gone to help bothers me. I'm concerned there are a line of living victims, and Oscar was just the one who died.

Still reeling from the loss, Alejandra said her family last saw the young boy on Friday after dropping him off at a San Fernando Valley Metrolink station at 7 p.m. so he could meet his soccer coach in Lancaster. Oscar and his coach were introduced to each other through an afterschool soccer program at Whittsett Park in North Hollywood, according to the family.

"His soccer coach made soccer jerseys," Alejandra said in Spanish. "He had taken other soccer teammates to help him, and that's why my brother went."

Alejandra added that a sibling called Oscar on Friday night to check on him, but the coach answered the phone.

"Then at 9 p.m. my brother called Oscar but the coach answered," Alejandra said in Spanish. "He said Oscar couldn't answer because his hands were full of paint."

he couldn't put the phone on speaker?

What a horrible tragedy. It sounds like the family trusted this guy because they thought he was a soccer coach. But I noticed there is no specific after school program being named. Nor has anyone spoken out in any official capacity.

It’s not hard to imagine how a pedophile was able to manipulate this particular situation. Even to the extent he visited the home to gain their trust. They never thought to check his credentials, just trusted who he said he was. I feel terrible for Oscar’s family.
