Brazil dam collapse: hundreds missing after mining disaster

About 200 people are missing after a mining dam collapsed in south-eastern Brazil, flooding a nearby community and raising fears of widespread contamination.

The disaster, in the municipality of Brumadinho in the state of Minas Gerais, released a wave of orange sludge after a tailings dam burst at an iron ore mine owned by Brazilian miner Vale SA on Friday.

Emergency workers in the city of Belo Horizonte said scores of people were still trapped in affected areas.

Local television channel TV Record showed a firefighter’s helicopter hovering inches off the ground as it hoisted a woman covered in mud out of the sludge.

Another local TV channel showed a video shot by firefighters arriving on the scene showing an extensive area covered in mud.

The death toll from a mining dam wall collapse in Brazil has jumped to nine and about 300 people still missing.

Workers with Brazilian mining company Vale were eating lunch when the dam that held back waste collapsed, burying a restaurant and surrounding community in Brumadinho in reddish-brown sludge.

The status of the workers and others in the city was unknown late yesterday, hours after what President Jair Bolsonaro and other officials were already describing as a "tragedy."

9 dead and hundreds are missing as rescuers scour mud after Brazil dam collapse

At least nine people are confirmed dead and hundreds are missing Saturday after a dam burst a day earlier at a Brazilian iron mine, causing severe flooding in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, according to local authorities.

The number of missing more than doubled since authorities' last report Friday, hours after the rupture.

Aerial footage showed the city of Brumadinho covered in mud. In video Friday from CNN affiliate Record TV, helicopters hovered near the ground as firefighters pulled people from the muck and airlifted them away.

Search on for up to 200 missing after Brazil dam collapse

The death toll from the collapse of a dam holding back mine waste in southeastern Brazil rose to 34 on Saturday as searchers flying in helicopters and rescuers laboring in deep mud uncovered more bodies. More than 200 people were still missing and authorities expected the death toll to rise during a search made more challenging by intermittent rains.

Just watched that a couple of times on a larger screen. Interesting to see that the train stopped for 30 seconds or so and then seems to reverse and derail (or are my eyes playing tricks on me?). Also the two vehicles - the car which drives towards the path of the flow and then the larger vehicle from the bottom right corner in a race against time. I wonder if those people survived.

Northern Minnesotans are so excited as the company marches on to make such a dam which will affect the largest fresh water lake in the world. Lake Superior.

O.M.G! This is incomprehensible. I am speechless.
This is from below the dam, not the side view the other video is.

A year after the disaster that unleashed millions of tons of mining waste in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, de Oliveira still hopes Lecilda’s body will be found beneath the mud.

Her sister was among 270 people killed in the huge avalanche of toxic sludge that buried houses and swaths of countryside in the mineral-rich region on January 25.

The official death toll is 259, but scores of firefighters are still picking through the dried mud for the bodies of 11 people listed as missing but certainly dead.

Lecilda’s is one of them.

Even though this case is about a year old it is still upsetting to read about.

I totally agree with the person that said this in the linked article.

"Cases like these are not accidents but environmental crimes that should be investigated, punished and repaired.”

I hope the company that was responsible for maintaining that Dam is held responsible and not just a slap on the wrist.
