BREAKING: 7.7 earthquake strikes off the coast of British Columbia

The tsunami warnings extend into the Bering Sea and King crab season opened two weeks ago.............. LOTS of fishing boats out there without safe harbor.

From what I understand (and I'm not at all any kind of geological expert), the boats on the water are far more safe than pretty much anywhere else...unless there are problem currents, but even then, motors can help handle those.

I'm not so worried about those fishermen as I am those folks on the beaches and coastlines if something comes along in the dark, when people are not necessarily watching the news (or even watching television).

Man. I just hate earthquakes...

RT @WunderAngela: Tonight's earthquake is the 3rd strongest in Canada since 1900, strongest was 8.1 in 1949 very close to tonight's.

Canadian tsunami Bulletin #3 just issued. Looks about the same as #2 to me.

That 3rd strongest earthquake was in the same region:

The M8.1 Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) Earthquake of August 22, 1949

AP article:

GOLDEN, Colorado (AP) — A magnitude-7.7 earthquake has struck off the coast of western Canada and a tsunami warning has been issued. There are no immediate reports of damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado says the quake hit the Queen Charlotte Islands at 11:14 p.m. Sunday local time (0314 GMT) and was centered 96 miles (155 kilometers) south of Masset, British Columbia.

The National Weather Service has issued a warning for coastal areas of British Columbia, southern Alaska, Northern California, Oregon and Washington state. It says the warning area includes Craig and Sitka, Alaska.

Tsunami warning issued for southern Alaska after offshore 7.7 quake. Washington is NOT affected. http://bit.ly/S4n4re

Two AP articles tweeted within a couple minutes of one another with conflicting info. This is why it's called "breaking" news. Part of it breaks up and washes away. Fun to follow though.

EAST COAST REPORT

Sandy now expected to making landfall in central NJ coast. No change in impact already reported to occur though.

Obviously, I can't speak for any individual boat, but as a rule, boats at sea have less to fear from tsunamis than coastal areas.

Even a major tsunami may only produce a wave of 3 or 4 feet in the open sea. It's when the water runs up on a shallow sea bed and than on land that the wave rises dramatically.

The crab boats are probably better off if they are NOT in a harbor.

Also, tsunamis have been known to cross the Pacific Ocean and do damage on the opposite shore. When I lived never the beach in LA, we had several tsunami alerts because of earthquakes in Alaska. Fortunately, none of them did any damage.

Those aftershocks are coming fast and furious

I'm in NorCal and there's a lot of discussion on our local group, yet no real clean answer. The sirens are not going, yet. (Crescent City, CA- we usually sustain the most damage in these events)

Thanks, Wuffy. I appreciate it. I think I can rest a bit easier...I always worry when I hear of things like a tsunami...never will forget what happened in Japan and Banda Ache. Horrible, horrible, horrible things a tsunami can be.

That's a good sized cracker-- just hope there's no thrust motions or underwater landslides, those are the culprits that cause the worst tsunamis.

Hope everyone rides out all of this action without too much damage-- I'm certain there will be a pile of aftershocks, hopefully progressively smaller. :crossfingers:

Gosh, busy weekend at USGS, NOAA, and The Weather Channel. Hang on!

Oblio, I wasn't in the tsunamis (thank God). I'm here in So Ca / Los Angeles area, where we haven't had a good shake in a while. But I've been in many major quakes, and they are no.fun.at.all. Every place I've been in during an EQ has had damage; some moreso than others.

A 7.7 is a HUGE quake, and there will be a lot of damage to infrastructure in the shake zone.
