'Our hearts are still beating fast" Magnitude 7.7. quake recorded off Haida Gwaii

snipped...According to John Clague, a seismology expert at Simon Fraser University, aftershocks for an earthquake of this size could continue for up to a week.

“You’re going to see more. Commonly, the largest aftershocks happen within the first few hours,” Clague said, noting the aftershocks will decrease in size as time goes on but that there’s no predicting when they’ll occur or how big they’ll be.

Lots of people on the road on Oahu. Just reported that a woman couldn't get to the hospital due to traffic and had to pull over on the road to have her baby!

On TV---it's serious, get out, get up high.

We are about 15 mins out from estimated arrival of first wave.

Hawaii in path of tsunami after 7.7 earthquake strikes western Canada
By Holly Yan, CNN
updated 4:01 AM EDT, Sun October 28, 2012

(CNN) -- Sirens blaring across parts of Hawaii urged residents to seek higher ground, as a tsunami -- triggered by a sizable 7.7-magnitude earthquake in western Canada -- barreled toward them.

Waves between 3 and 7 feet are expected to lash the islands beginning about 10:28 p.m. Saturday (4:28 a.m. Sunday ET), the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

"Basically this tsunami is pointed right at us," said Gerard Fryer, senior geophysicist at the center.

The impact could last for hours.

"It's not just one wave, it's a succession of waves," Fryer said. "We are recommending coastal evacuation."...

I'm going to bed.

I'm on very high ground. So high that if it should make it up here---this whole island would be wiped off the face of the earth.

It looks like there has been some surge on North Shore (Oahu). I'll check in when I get up in AM.

Thanks for posting that. You were the second person, just by a split second, that I worried about in Hawaii. Walter Becker came to mind first, but you were, very, very, very close behind. Please forgive me. :please:

Kat, please check in when you can...

There is nothing on the news this morning; all is about Hurricane Sandy, so I'm hopeful that this means there is no damage from the tsunami in Hawai'i.

Love and prayers to all...

Best-
Herding Cats

From our local paper the threat was called off at 4 AM our time.

As for any damage, it hasn't been reported yet. Which isn't surprising because it took a few days last time for them to start reporting from islands other than the Big Island and Oahu.

I think HI dodged the bullet on this one. It had all the makings of being a bad one. JMHO

Hey, Kat, I'm glad the waves weren't too bad on Oahu. I still remember how you stayed up and held my hand (virtually) the night of the Japanese earthquake while we waited to see what would happend in your Islands.

My niece is back in Indiana now, so I only have you to worry about during tsunami warnings.
